bra dying fail...

so i tried to dye a white bra green with iPoly for synthetic, because the bra was polyester and because of the boiling method, it totally shrank the cups making it unwearable and the straps are all curled up from the elastic in them getting damaged. i learned my lesson that u can not dye a padded cup bra or the cups will get messed up from the heat, etc.
plus, the chemical smell of the dye made the resulting bra unwearable as well... has anyone been truly successful dying a bra and it not getting messed up or resulting in nauseating off gassing?
i've seen some post here and else where on the internet, but maybe i did something wrong?
i followed the directions to a T.... :/

  • Oh man! At least you know now >.< I made a kind of similar mistake, my first time handwashing lingerie the band of my Claudette Dessous shrunk by abt 4 inches. The tag had said "keep away from fire"... I won't be washing weird flammable fabrics with that detergent again, I guess :P

  • I've successfully dyed 2 bras (one moulded, one padded) with iDye Poly with no damage to my bras:

70J - Ewa Michalak » Chp Brzoskwinka (301) (from peach to magenta; pics are at the bottom)
34GG - Panache Sport » Sports Bra (5021) (from grey to purple)

I used the sink method and heated water on the stove. I didn't heat it all the way to boiling, though, and it cooled down even more being in the sink and not on the stove. I would guess the water being at a constant boil is what ruined your bra, which stinks since the directions suggest that as an option. :( I had a bad feeling about water that hot possibly damaging my bras, so I'm glad I didn't do it. I'm sorry for your loss, though! :( :( :(

I washed mine in the washing machine on the soak then delicate cycle with regular laundry detergent & softener the first couple of times after I dyed them. I haven't had any trace of the smell after that, and now I continue to hand wash as usual.
