How do you people take such good pictures of yourselves?!

I'm thinking about starting a bra blog, but I'm so bad at taking fit pictures. Some of you ladies always have great pictures on your fit checks and blogs - how do you do it? I can never get the lighting or the angle right. And back pictures... haha, no. Please, bloggers, share the secrets of your perfect pictures! I admit, a huge part of the reason I don't participate more here is that my pictures are just bad and unhelpful for everyone.

  • Well... I'm a photographer and have a fancy pants camera and off camera flash, so that helps, but believe me this - light is everything. Get as much natural light as humanly possible. A $5,000 camera will shoot crappy pictures in bad lighting. You can do just fine on a phone camera if you have the right lighting. Overhead incandescent light sucks so shut it off. Natural light doesn't cast harsh shadows like artificial light does. Open the blinds, pick a room with a giant window, something - and stand facing the window instead of having it behind you. Time it during the brightest part of the day. Try to avoid using your flash unless you absolutely have to - on camera flashes create very harsh shadows and lines.

Tripods are helpful, but if you don't have one prop your phone or camera up at boob height and use a self timer. Standing straight on facing the camera is essential for the front shot, but typically standing at a 45 degree angle with your shoulders back in proper posture is most "flattering." Shoot a front facing shot, a 45 degree angle shot, and a side profile shot - those are The 3 Shots that help a reader determine fit.

I rarely take back pictures. One, because my shoulders and back are overdeveloped for my stature and frame thanks to gymnastics and I feel like I look huge from behind, and two - I have a giant back tattoo that is a real pain in the ass to photoshop out. Since I include no identifying information about myself on my blog, including tattoos, I only shoot back shots when I feel it's necessary, like when reviewing bikini bottom coverage or something. If I want to illustrate just how big a band is on me, I'll take a side profile shot with me pulling the excess band away from my body. Or I'll just tell the reader "this band is giant."

  • I don't know what kind of equipment you have, but it you have just a camera phone and nothing else I know iPhones you can plug in the iPhone head phones and press the volume buttons on the cord to take a picture. That way you can set the phone on a solid surface, find a good angle to get a full shot, and then take the picture using the ear buds.
