Is it common to have to adjust your size for a no-wire bra?

Last year, I bought a Panache no-wire bra that was technically for nursing because I wanted a wireless bra for around the house. The bra is very adorable, but it would bend in a strange way under the band and fall forward too much rather than holding its shape.

This weekend, I went to Cacique (Lane Bryant) to get a no-wire bra as I hurt my back and my usual Freya bras run pretty tight in the band. Normally, I'm about a 38F-38G in Cacique and a 38G in Panache, Freya, and Elomi. When I tried on my usual sizes, there was quadboob at the top and the shoulders felt too tight even after adjusting the straps. So I tried a few larger sizes and ended up getting a 40G, though I think I could be a 38H, but they didn't have any in stock.

It seemed a little weird at first that I'd have to go up a couple sizes to find a no-wire that fit, but then I remembered the Panache bra. So now I'm wondering if that's normal when switching from wire to no-wire? I would've thought they'd adjust the sizing for lack of wire. Or is it because my breasts are joined at the apex, so I need a roomier no-wire bra than those who have naturally separate breasts?

Are your sizes the same between wire and wireless styles?

  • My sizing is not the same in wire-free as opposed to wired. I usually size up in the band and down in the cup. I wear a 30-32 band in wired bras though so things are probably different in other size ranges. I also only wear unwired bras that have a thick underbust band because I find them more supportive, but this also means they usually fit tighter.

  • The larger Cacique no wire bras generally do come with a band underneath and I agree that it gives good support. I think the bras might be cut a little small on purpose to give the feeling of more security.

I just didn't like the tightness in the shoulders of the 40F and the 38G was too small in the cup. I just wish the no wire bras weren't so plain and limited in colors. My Panache no wire bra was beautiful, just cut all wrong.
