mailing from Calif. to Canada?

I am going to buy a bra from a Bratabase member's listing. I don't have Paypal so we agreed I would send her cash or a money order to her in a letter. She lives in Canada and I'll be mailing the $ from California. From what I can figure out from the US Postal Service's web site it costs $1.15 to mail a letter to Canada. So does that mean I stick $1.15 in stamps on the envelope? Or does that mean I have to go to the post office and pay for postage there? I have lots of stamps but no way to get to the post office right now. Does anyone have any insight on this? Thank you.

  • Did you weigh your package? If yes and you used that weight to calculate shipping on the web, I think you can attach the stamps. Please note, you'll also need a customs form. It should be available on the USPS website, too.

  • If all you are doing is sending a regular letter envelope and it fits the dimensions and weight requirements on the usps website, then throw on the stamps and drop it in the box. However, it is rather unwise to send actual cash in the mail as it can be stolen. If you are sending a cheque or money order with the receiver's name on it, that is safer, but with regular letter post there is always the possibility that it will get lost. That doesn't happen very often, but with regular letter post there is no signature, tracking, or insurance. If it is a smaller amount and you literally can't get to a post office, you could give it a try and cross your fingers. If, however, it is possible to get in to a post office, you can send a money order through the post office or send a registered letter. I don't know US prices on those, but in Canada, it is one of the cheepest and safest ways to do it.
