Starting my bra adventures and I need help.

I have decided to reach out to you lovely ladies for help. I've grown quite a lot in the last year and a half. I went from a 38E (US) to a 40J now according to the sizing guide AND calculator from ABTF.

Here's where things get a little complicated. I not only have a lot of migrated tissue around my armpit area, I also can't stand underwires due to them digging into my ribs. No matter how many different brands I try, it still digs underneath my breast bone causing me to either go braless or fall back to my old sports bra habits. Does anyone else have this problem, too? Of course when I go to brick and mortar stores, they don't only not carry my size, they look at me like I'm crazy or tell me that bras "aren't supposed to be comfortable."

I'm at a loss and wanting to just throw in the towel, but I see how helpful everyone is and thought it would be worth it to reach out and hopefully start in the right direction to a properly fitting bra. You all give me hope that I can not only get this solved, but feel sexy in my own skin again!

As far as what I'm looking for, I've done my fair share of bra hunting and I adore the wireless maternity bras, anything that clasps in the front, and some longlines. I'm new to this, but I don't believe I am full on top...as much as I would love to rock a balconette. My measurements are on my page and I can upload body shots if needed!

Any help is appreciated.
Thank you in advance!

  • It's possible you will almost always prefer nonwired because it's true that SOME people with more ample boobs find wires aren't super comfy due to the weight of the boobs and/or simple body quirks such as rib flares. However, in your size range, it's common for manufacturers to err on the side of too-tall and wide underwires--so that could also be responsible for your wire issues.

Axillary (armpit) tissue, though, is a natural feature of the human body. It is not a deformity caused by ill-fitting bras, so you shouldn't feel like it's a problem that has to be fixed! The issue with bras will be to find out if you prefer it contained in the bra for more support, or if you like a bra design that just leaves that tissue alone.

  • Thanks for the little piece of advice! Anytime I go anywhere to get fitted, it's a big hassle because the ladies working not take no for an answer when it comes to an underwire. They just keep telling me to pull the bra up more and I can't because my boobs are in the way. At this point, I'm more interested in containing the tissue since all of my recent growth seems to be popping up in that area. I didn't know this was possible, but my roots are getting taller. Have you experience a lot of growth out of nowhere? I'm in that boat right now and kind of regretting it. Haha. My next place to look would be for a maternity bra or the ones that I keep seeing with the foam rather than the wire for support.
