Apr 23, 2019

The past few months I have bought and returned so many bras because most didn't fit. The others I adjusted or they fit but give a horrible shape. I was told by an advisor at Bravissimo that there isn't a bra for me. I get close but no dice. If the wires fit, the cup gapes. If the cup fits, the wire is either floating on top of me or digging in to my ribs. I hit a sweet spot with bras where after a certain size they will not fit my frame at all. Or they give a weird shape, either fat and round, flat and pointy, projected ski slope, downward drop, upward rocket, falling to the side, squished out the top. The best shape I ever get is from my old 34Ds, although they ride up and my straps fall down.

The two that fit are Freya Utopia Padded Half Cup Bra (1983) in 28FF and Bravissimo Esther in 28FF, but they give a fat shape. Although I am wide from the front, from the side I am small and projected. If I lean forward in most bras, I only need like half or a third of the cups. These don't lift or support, they only encase me and stop me from falling out the top or down the side. Same style Freya in 30F is loose unless on the tightest setting. I tried 30E and 32DD which give a nicer shape and lift, but the wire does not lie flat at the front or side, and I don't fill the bottom of the cups. Deco in 28FF was huge in cups at top and was small around band, or maybe wires small around under bust, but it was also too wide at shoulders. 30E fit like a 32DD and still had gapping even with straps tightened up.

Bravissimo Satine in 30E was small in cups, 28FF feels tight in front, the wires dig in and there is no side support, but 28G was too tall and gaping in cups, although feels more comfortable. Plus their 28 is big in some styles, small in others. I tried Curvy Kate in different styles. I like the lifted rounder shape this brand gives but cannot find one that fits. I tried a 28FF in unpadded plunge and it squeezed the life out of me, but still gaping cups in middle. I got 30F and still gaping until I put it on the tightest hook. And they both came up too tall under my arm. I tried half cup style, I think showgirl, which in 30E the cups fit at the top but not the bottom, but 30F I was swimming in them. Scantilly style is just too shallow or the wire to cup to band doesn't work.

I tried Ultimo in different styles, but their cups are too shallow and tall. One plunge style in 32DD fit in the cups, but again the fat shape. 32E in the Autumn was too big, 30E was also gaping. 30E in Rumina fit, but again the flat, fat shape. The one I liked was Gossard Glamour Lace Sweetheart Plunge which sits so nicely at the top. But again the wire problems, the smaller cup fits better but the wire is floating at the side, the bigger one fits at first but then I start getting the gaping.

Wonderbra I also tried. I think they use the +4 method. I tried a 30E and although the wires were pulled back, I was squeezed out and the cup cut in, and even then it was too wide at the shoulder. I tried with a bra extender and the cup sat better in front, but this made it gap in front. Fantasie I have also tried. 30E cuts in at the top in their side support style, 30F was crinkly until I took in the band. Their demi style fit better on the last hook in 30F and actually gave some shape. Same with Gorsenia, their 30F non-padded gave a better shape but crinkly tops, 30E too much side boob and no shape.

Ann Summers smaller cups fit better in padded plunge styles but same issues with wires. I got a non-wired style which has no gaping, although the cup is too small and half my breast is actually under the band. Svannah Miller non-wired just sits on top, and the cup is both too big and small at the same time. Boux Avenue, I have a 34D lace demi bra which gives a nice shape, but the back is big and cups are a bit small. 32DD is small in plunge style, 32E more comfortable but too big in cups, although wire better length. Same with 32DD Tshirt bra, gaps in the middle. 30E in non-padded balcony has a little crinkling, in padded balcony no gapping but small, 30F in padded full cup has no gaping but is too tall with empty side space.

And I have tried many more brands with similar problems. Best option is to get padded crop tops without wires, althought they are a pain to take on and off. The calculator is recommending me sizes above 30FF but they will be massive.

  • I'm curious, what does a 'fat shape' mean? Do you have an example?

  • If you could enter your measurements and add a few bras with photos, it would help us in helping you. There are many options available, but knowing which would be ideal for you without having that info would be near impossible, and we wouldn't want to make blind suggestions that would just cost you more money and still not work well. :-/
