Weight fluctuations and bras...

Hi all!

After discovering this site years ago and building a nice bra wardrobe I've been coasting for a while. But over the past few months I've lost a bit of weight and now half of my bras (the 32G section) are hilariously large in the cup, and the other half still kind of work but don't give me the lift and shape anymore due to being a bit too big in the cup (the 32FF section). My Ewas seem to accommodate my weight loss better that my Cleos do, and miraculously my Comexim 3chp half cup still seems to fit fine. It does fit differently than when I was bigger (the outer corners of the cup come up higher under my arms, probably because I've tightened the straps quite a bit), but it doesn't gap at all (maybe I was deluding myself that it fit well during my bigger days?).

I think I'm currently a 32F or 30FF, but as I'm still planning on losing a few pounds I am on the fence about investing in new bras right now, so I'd like your advice!

What do you guys do when your weight fluctuates? When do you decide to invest in new bras, and what do you do with the old ones? Do you keep them in case your weight changes again, or do you get rid of them? And do you find that the same style of bras fit you well when your are bigger or smaller, or does your shape fluctuate with your weight?

  • My weight is fluctuating all the time because of pregnancy and breastfeeding. My first pregnancy I sold all my smaller sizes to buy a new stash (used or deeply discounted) every time my measurements changed. This ended up being a bad idea because I lost all the weight in less than a year and my breasts went right back to their original size... so I sold all of *them* and bought 28Es again.

This time I decided to keep them all, but my baby is now 10 months and I'm only a few pounds heavier than when I started, but I still pretty much fit in my 32Gs :/ I don't know if the size change is going to be permanent or what, but I still have all my once-fitting bras from 28E to 32GG just in case.

So yeah, my advice would be to wear the old ones as long as they're still comfortable, and buy cheap/used ones as you continue to lose weight. When you reach your goal weight or aren't losing anymore, then invest in a more expensive bra stash. :) Just in case, you can keep your favorites of the larger sizes.

  • When I was going through pregnancy/nursing/between baby stages where my weight and size and shape were changing every few months, I kept only 2-3 well-fitting bras on hand at a time. By having only 2-3 in the rotation, they wore out after a year or so, thus were always ready to be chucked by the time I changed again.

Now that I am done having babies and my weight and body shape are stable, my drawer is full :-0

In my experience working as a weight-loss pro, I see with my clients that breast size and shape as well as rib cage/back size and shape change for approximately every 10lbs of weight loss.

Therefore, a woman could, potentially, need a different bra size at each of these points in their journey.

Unless women are going through child-bearing stages, I don't recommend to my clients that they keep bras(or any clothing) that are too big. It's almost like a subliminal message that they're "allowed" to gain back the weight or that they are expecting themselves to fail. I also don't recommend that they keep anything from the past that is unrealistically small. This, too, can be self-degrading.

Not to mention, each time we gain and/or lose, our shape can be different regardless of what the scale says.

I advise my clients who are in the process of losing weight to have 2 well-fitting bras and to get new ones every time those no longer fit.

Once they have remained at a stable weight for 6 months, I tell them to go as crazy as they like, but to make sure they have at least 2 (1 to wash and 1 to wear) and that they fit well and are never worn out.

Bratabase is wonderful for those going through physical changes, as it allows us to sell what no longer suits us to get much-needed cash and to purchase new (or at least new-to-us) treasures for less than we would pay at the store.
