I remember reading somewhere that this is to avoid confusion as capital "I" looks like a number, but I can't remember the exact source.
A similar reasoning explains why Washington, DC has an "I" and "K" street but no "J"-- capital I and J used to look too similar in script, so J was skipped to avoid confusion.
I recall reading somewhere not official because it looked like a 1, but it is official that Ewa skipped the O cup because it looked like a 0. You want the cup size to clearly read like a letter and not to be confused with the band number. But I will always enforce that there is no "UK Standard" but more of like "What most of UK popular brands have loosely agreed on implicitly", because if you look at a UK brand that probably sells most of the bras you will find out in the street on the UK, they do have an I cup. Now which brand escapes me!! I know we have it here!
