Is it OK for a 26" underbust to wear a 30 band?

Technically, I need 28 band bras. Actually, some calculators say I need 26 band bras but that's just not happening- I've had bruises with certain 28s before so I doubt 26 would be good. I have a bony ribcage so I tend to go bigger rather than smaller with band sizes.

It's gotten to a point where 32s are just not doable anymore...AT ALL. But would it be that bad if I just wore 30s? I really want to fix any potential migration, and wear the size that will be best for my breasts over time, but buying 28s is just such a pain....

  • It's really a question of what's comfortable and supportive for you. My youngest sister is considerably slimmer than I am with a 23" waist & 25" loose underbust, but she happily wears 28 bands, including Freya Deco which is like a 31 band, on the snuggest hook and they're stable and she's comfortable in them.

I measure 25.5" inches around if you really really haul on the tape and I push all the air out of my lungs, but I find 28 bands are too loose for me.

The difference between us? Her breasts are somewhat shallow and basically self-supporting, and mine are definitely not, and I'm very squashy, and she isn't. I'm petite, but I'd definitely identify as being plush/chubby/plump. I think both of these factors play in our preference when it comes to bra bands.

I don't think it's worth settling for any size just because of convenience, especially as band alteration is relatively easy, however women find that they require different levels of support for comfort. So, if you find that a 30 band is stable and supportive, there's no reason to size down. However, if a 30 band isn't sufficiently supportive, I don't think that the increased difficulty of obtaining a 28 band should deter you from trying to wear them for your maximum comfort and long-term breast health.

My philosophy is that a band needs to be as firm as is necessary to be supportive, whether that's +4, +0, -4 or whatever other fit ideals you're working from. If it's not bruising you, and it's not riding up, anything in between is about personal preference.

  • if 28s physically hurt you, then get 30s!

I actually found that with weight loss (read fat loss, more bony ribs) some of my 30s were less comfy than they had been. I find that i have to have narrow wires now, or otherwise my ribs get crushed by the too wide wires.

If it feels comfy, and you feel supported, i.e not tugging your band / straps all day, then go for what feels best!
