Review of Linda's Bra Salon - Murray Hill, NY, NY

So appointments are recommended. Definitely understand why now. You can see a small rack of product in the "lobby" of the store. Everything else is in the backroom. I only waited about 20mins, before being ushered into a room by Angela - my fitter.

Now according to the website, every fitter at that store has been trained by Linda - the owner. My fitting was... pretty standard to the rest of my fitting experiences. Which is to say: not the best.

I kicked it off by telling her I needed probably either a 36H or 34HH according to Chantelle sizing, but wanted to try some UK bras. I explained I had recently tried on ~20 bras in 36G, 36GG, 36H, 34G, 34H, & 34HH. I was currently wearing a 38F that was too small in the cup and waaay too big in the band.

With my old bra still on, she measured my ribcage loosely and assured me I was no smaller than a 38. Then she measured loosely in the overbust/armpit (I have GOT to figure out what this is supposed to be for). She stepped back smiled and said "You're a 38F."

"Uh, no. I'm wearing a 38F and look at this. I'm popping out like there is no tomorrow." I pointed to my quadboobing.
"No, that's normal. If I put you in a 36, you will not have smooth lines [in armpit]."
"I know, I care more about getting 80% of my support through my band than some armpit fat"

(Losing faith veerrrrry quickly. So I changed tacks)
"I get really bad asthma attacks if my band is too loose. I have tried and prefer smaller bands." (true)

So she brought me a 36F. Fail. The gore didn't come anywhere near my sternum.
"That's normal. If you want it to touch, you'll need a 38 and a lower [gore]."

36G in a 3pt cup (I'm shallow and specifically requested no 3part cups)

Finally she gave in and brought me a 34G. It Fit! Granted it was a 3part... so it cut into the top of my boobs. When I showed that to her she said that was normal. "And look, you won't fall out!" I explained that I understood, but didn't like the 'angular' effect on my boobies.

.... 20mins later she brought me a 34G in one of the bras I specifically requested! AND IT FITS!!!!
I got the Panache Harlequin Coco Balconnet.

tl;dr - Linda's might be one of the better bra shops in NYC, but it's definitely not the place to go without 1) your own measurements 2) understanding of boob shapes and bra shapes 3) ability to stick-to-your-guns
...and I officially hate the word "normal"

  • The only time that overbust measurement is useful is in dressmaking, when it can be used to calculate a full bust adjustment for your clothing. When it comes to bras, it's completely useless. We don't wear our bras upside down. :D

  • @Ereshiy - well, maybe YOU don't .... As I told the VS fitter - if I wear a wired bra upside down, my boobs already are voting to move south. I want them to move to Canada. I think the wire needs to be under my boobs and tight.

They leave me alone now. Curse them for still having the nicest cotton panties. The power mesh and all in my bras gets hot and sweaty. I'm not putting that there. Cotton is my friend. I don't want extra gyn visits from some rash or whatever there.
