I decided that for Christmas I am going to get my mother properly fitted. There are a lot of issues that we will have to work around though. My mom hasn't worn an underwire bra in probably close to 20 years. I think she's wearing around a 38C or D, but probably more like 34 or 36 in the F-G range. She's overweight and self-conscious about it because she was thin when she was young. I think getting her into a bra that fits is going to do wonders for her comfort and self-esteem. The biggest issue is that she is a 14 year survivor of breast cancer. She had a lumpectomy and lymph node dissection and suffers from mild lymphedema. I'm worried that wires and a firm band may interfere with her already compromised lymphatic flow and cause discomfort and swelling. Has anyone had experience or know anyone with circumstances like these? I'd like some ideas about where to start, what to look for, and what to avoid. Thanks!

jamiep She might be able to help?
What a wonderful gift for your mom! I understand her issues having gone through the same thing. You might want to think about giving her s gift certificate for a breast massage that includes lymph drainage.
I find that having a massage once a month makes me feel much better both physically and emotionally. I wear underwire bras and have not any issue. Just make sure the band is somewhat stretchy, This will hard, but most important, the only way to know is to wear it. If you have a professional fitter near you that is trained to fit breast cancer survivors that would be a great place to start, call and ask. I don’t have one near where I live so I have had to it by trial and error (mostly error). Finding a great fitting bra is a must for ones self-esteem and comfort. My breast tissue has changed a lot it is not as firm as it was before treatment, so a good (great) fitting bra makes all the difference in the world. That said I am still looking for the one perfect bra.
Even if you are not able to get in to the right bra before Christmas at least try for a breast massage, she will thank you, trust me!
I hope this helps. Please keep in contact with me.
