Inverted Nipples

TMI ahead

So since I've started wearing more correct sizes, my (class 2) inverted nipples having become less inverted (that is to say they protrude more easily). Reading the wikipedia article on inverted nipples made me wonder what factors are contributing to my own and how wearing a correctly fitted bra may have helped that. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • I have "class 1" nipples, which are usually referred to as "flat nipples" or "shy nipples" rather than fully inverted. This was a HUGE problem for me regarding breastfeeding, so I saw a lot of lactation consultants and doctors who had a lot of things to say about it.

Basically, inside your nipple there are fibrous bands of tissue that are pulling the nipple inside. The only way to make the nipples really not inverted is to stretch/break/tear these bits of tissue. This does happen when you have inverted nipples and you breastfeed and it's not comfortable. Given that the inversion is due to bits of tissue literally pulling your nipples back inwards, I can't see how a bra would make that much difference.

  • Do you know if hormones can influence it then (sorry, you're way more knowledgeabe on this subject than I am so I'm a bit curious)? I went on progestin only birth control around the same time I started wearing correctly sized bras. I suppose it could be random, but yeah.
