Strapless bras? Have tried many but yet to find one in 30F that works and feels 'safe' for a whole evening. I'd be interested in a very long line one, almost a cross between a corset and a bra, that may give the lift without the straps and stay put?

It sounds like you might be looking for a bustier style, perhaps? Because they have to fit the waist and because the base patterns for those haven't really changed in decades (save for replacing seamed cups with molded ones), many of the brands that make them have vintage style sizing, such that you may need a bigger band size and in some cases a smaller cup size than usual. Many bustiers are sister designs to older longlines that do have straps, and in longlines for example I often take a 34 band for my 29" underbust, and a D or DD cup instead of my usual FF/G!
In the USA, you typically have to go to bridal wear departments/stores, but they are quite easy to find on large lingerie retail websites. I moved away from Europe years ago but when I lived in France and the UK in the 90s they could also be found in lingerie shops and places like Marks and Spencer.
If you are thinking of mid-length items like Freya's longline bras (things that only have about 5-7 hooks and don't go much lower than your belly button) those are trickier to fit, but in a bustier you will be very secure as long as the bodice is the right size and the cups are compatible with your breast shape.
Ah thank you Wendy, I just googled bustier and have come up with some good things. The following is exactly what I was thinking of, the price isn't what I had in mind, but I'm on the right track now and will keep looking. Many thanks :)
