Jan 24, 2013 Washing your bras

When it comes to washing my bras and panties, I've been hand-washing for years.( Except for cheap cotton panties, I'll through in the machine.)I used to outside line-dry my bras until 5 or 6 years ago when I learned how hard the sun is on the elastic in bras. Since then I've in-side , in-the-shade line-dried them. Recently I heard it's best to let your bras dry laid-out flat on a towel inside out of the sun. And not in the garage because the fumes form your car's exhaust can deteriorate the material bras are made of.
As for what to hand- wash your bras with , I had been using" Woolite" in cold water. But now, since last summer, I've been cold water washing with"Delicate Fabric Wash" from Nordstrom ,which is a high consentrate and doesn't take as much to wash the same amount of my lingerie. Which in the long run is less expensive.
I've read good things about a product called "Forever New" also but have never tried it.
How do you ladys wash your bras?

  • I have to admit... I've been terribly lazy with my bras... A long time ago, when my bras were very very ill-fitting anyways, I even tumble dried them: I knew that it would ruin the fit and construction of them, but since I wasn't benefiting from that anyways, I figured it made no difference. When I got in slightly better bras I stopped tumble-drying them, since I was so afraid they'd shrink! But still put them on (a gentle) wash in the machine... But no more! Especially since I've tried more 'stiffer' molded and padded cups, it just seems so obvious that they shouldn't go in the washer - but I just use the same wash soap for them, and hang them to dry in the shower (my bathroom and kitchen, the only wet-proof rooms in my flat are terrible small! So when ever I do laundry, I can't have company over, haha)

Do you know what the differences between regular washing soap and lingerie soap is? Is it a certain chemical that is bad for lingerie, or is it just super-sensitive soap? I use super sensitive soaps anyway, since I'm allergic to most soap ingredients, so I haven't really bothered with special soap for lingerie too

  • @ XLHourglass: I've been told that normal detergents (including Woolite) have alcohols in them that would break down the elastic in a bra faster.

I, too use the Nordstrom Lingerie wash and I love it. I've used forever new only a few times...the best thing about it is that you don't have to scrub your lingerie; the stains lift out.
