Anyone have tips to gently clean a bra?

I'm simultaneously overjoyed with a new bra and beyond disappointed it's in such sad shape! After a watchful eye on ebay I finally found a (used) bra I'd wanted over 2.5years ago but never found in my size back then. Well, I bought the Cleo "George" 5371 and although I knew from the auction photos it was a very darkly stained yellow I didn't know just how bad it would be when it arrived today.

The previous owner said it had been worn "about 4-5 times" and (a huge peeve) it's been machine washed!!! >: ( She told me it was from washing with dark colors that this bra is stained and not from excessive sweating/body dirt. Still, I'm hoping to be pro-active in saving this bra's life.

Obviously the biggest concern is the outside: the cups and wings are dull but OK (they are still somewhat nicely yellow). Severely blackened are the straps and the back eyelets (with the hooks/eyes). I hope I can replace both the straps and back eyelet!

The Plan is Step 1: hand "scrub" allover with The Stain Remedy (www.forevernew.com) which has worked well on other fabrics although I've never had reason to test on any bras!

Any ideas for other natural stain removers to try which don't involve any harshness or scrubbing? Usually stain sticks with built-in scrubber heads will be too tough on the delicate bra materials and this poor bra has been through enough!

  • You had to pay for it? It seems wrong to me to sell something that you've treated so badly. I had a white bra which had gotten a bit yellowed on the straps from sunscreen, and I debated for some time about even giving it away! In the end, I soaked it in stain remover for a bit, then rinsed it and applied lemon juice and left it out in the sun. Lemon juice is recommended for cleaning stains out of old lace, and it seemed to clean it up fairly well, to the point that I wasn't embarrassed to give it away.

  • I can also recommend Heitmanns Dessous Weiß, it is essentially a very gentle bleach specifically designed for bras. Ok, white bras so the yellow might get lighter, but it sure helps with stains from dark clothes. (You should see my old beige bra that ended up among the jeans before and after taking a bath in that stuff.) If you want it send me a PM. I could pop to the store and get it for you, price including worldwide shipping should be around 7 EUR/10 USD.
