UK 36F = US 36DDDD/G (UK:US = a:a, b:b, c:c, d:d, dd:dd/e, e:ddd/f, f:dddd/g, ff:dddd/h. HOWEVER, sometimes US brands use DDD/E or DD/E, so that makes it more confusing. But really most bras over DD or DDD you'll want to use UK sizing as its a little more standardized) US is basically 'let's add more D's since obviously that's where the boob alphabet stops.
