Reinforcing a band alteration

So I folded the Kinga bra's band over on itself and did a quick hand alteration - like stitched in a square across the top and down the band and across the bottom & back up - to see if it improved the overall fit. It does, immensely. But the band is mesh and I know it'll need reinforced somehow so the stitches don't pull through the mesh. The base of straps are sewn down into the band if that makes sense, & I folded it over on itself between where the clasps attach & the base of the straps that run through the band. I tried to attach all of my vertical stitches to either the clasp material or the strap material instead of just stitching through mesh alone but I'm still nervous something will pull out. I can use a friend's machine and reinforce my own stitches with tighter stitches but what's the best way to make sure there's not too much stress put on the mesh part of the band?

  • You might be able to add a stripe of seam binding or even bias tape across the part of the stitching you are doing through the mesh. I bet you could find a color that would blend with your bra too. Seam bindings come in lace as well.

  • Brilliant. That's the kind of thing I was looking for but couldn't think of on my own. Thanks!!
