Issue resolved
So I went ahead & exchanged this bra for a different size and a different style. The ebay store I ordered from only had 28E in a plunge style, so I exchanged it for that. It fits better, well enough to keep, but I notice the band & straps are "stretchier" in the M+S DD+ styles. I can wear the band on the tightest hook, whereas with the 28DD (part of an A-DD line) I could only wear it on the loosest hook. (I will be writing a full review for my new M+S bra in 28E soon.) In the future I will likely try 30DD for M+S bras, but probably start with 28E for other brands.
Thanks again for your help!
Original problem
Hi! I'm back for more advice. I just got a M&S 28DD balconet bra in the mail. Tried it on - the band is good.
The cups don't fit right. The center gore does not quite lay flat, but it almost does.
The wire seems almost long enough, but cuts into breast tissue in the center when it is all scooped in (see upclose front photo). It seems like the cups may be slightly too far apart. The sides of the wire seem to come up high enough.
When compared to my 32C VS demi bra (posted before), the wires are longer on this one, but the cup depth seems about the same. The cups are significantly further apart on the M&S bra.
However, you will notice that the cups wrinkle at the top. Yet the cups also give the quadra-boob effect from the side, especially when all scooped in.
This leaves me puzzled; I'd think the cups are too small if not for the wrinkling. Or, maybe they are just the wrong shape? Maybe if the cups were closer & shaped different, then it might fit?
For a balconet style, I found the cups cut very curved on the top, not straight or angled like most balconets/demis.
Should I try another size or is this style likely just wrong for me?

helpfulI feel pretty sure that the cups are too small. The shape of this particular bra may not be right for you either, however as your breasts are sort of 'teardrop' shape I think you need to persevere with balconnet bras. If your breasts are too big for the cup, the wire is going to dig in, and yet in other parts of the cup the fabric will wrinkle because you are unable to feed the breast into that part of the cup (excuse my analogy, but I can't think of any other way of explaining it!). You need a bra with wider cups, probably also deeper cups as well, and as you say, cups closer together. I would suggest you try a 28E in a balconnet style, and if you get the opportunity, try 28DD in the same style, and see where you go from there. I suspect that 28E will become your 'starting point' for future bras. You will discover that some styles and brands will run large in the band or cup, and others the opposite way, but once you find a bra that fits you, and you know what to look for it will become so much easier.

helpfulI think that the biggest problem here is the style. The cup is too closed for you: the rim of the cup turns inwards to your chest too soon, as if there was no breast tissue there - but on you there is, quite a lot. As a consequence you get quadboob.
You should switch to halfcups (demibras) to avoid this problem.
Also on your old 32C bra the cups were actually too small. The signs were all there: armpit fat, band feeling tight while riding up at the same time, wires digging in. Going for a 28DD thus doesn't help, bc a 28DD is actually roughly the same size as a 32C. You thus need to go up in cupsize too.
Wrinkling in the cup sometimes indicates a too small cup too: this is called orange-in-a-glass. I think that you have this phenomenon going on. Not just in regards to the underwires, but also in regards to the rim of the cup. Again, go for demibras to avoid this.
Bras you could look at: Cleo Rita/Sadie/Martha, Curvy Kate Tease Me/Thrill Me,
Another rec I have is the Cleo George/Lizzie/Eleanor/Sasha cut or the Cleo Lucy. Those are not halfcups, but these cuts tend to fit well on breasts like yours.

helpfulI think the problem is more with the style than the size. I commented on your review before seeing this post and went into a bit more detail there, but my guess is that whilst this bra is effectively too small in the cups for you, the shape means it's unlikely to fit in a larger cup size. If you want to give it a try, I would go for 30DD rather than 28E, because the DD+ version of this bra fits completely differently (on me, it ran a good two cup sizes larger than the A-DD version).
In brands other than M&S, though, trying 28E would be a good idea. It could be useful to order something in both 28DD and 28E to get a feel for which size you're closer to, since it's easier to make comparisons between two sizes in the same model than two sizes in different models.

helpfulI think the cups are definitely too small. What you're experiencing is the "orange in a small glass" effect (ref: http://balkonetka.pl/static/uploads/2008/05/pomarancza-w-szklance.png). Basically, because the underwires don't completely enclose your breasts, there's empty space in the cup. I'd try going up a cup size first. Once you're able to get all the breast tissue inside the underwires, it becomes a bit easier to determine if a bra shape is compatible with your own personal shape.

helpfulThat front-on image clearly shows that your breasts can't even hope to fit in the cups! I assume you've already lift, shake and scoop your breasts into the cups? (http://www.venusianglow.com/2008/04/how-to-put-on-bra-correctly-and-why-it.html) Lean forward, shimmy and follow that site's instructions; that should help you get an accurate fit.
Since you're kind of bottom heavy like me, I also recommend that you persist with the balconettes. Also, try to avoid cups that have a clear, stiff, decorative line across the top of the cup. Sometimes cups that are less tight across that top work better because it's not cutting into your breast.
