Issue resolved
Giving up on CK in these styles! They don't work for my shape.
Original problem
I'm not sure if I need a different size (maybe 28GG?). The diagonal seam and top of the cup cut in, and the cups look a bit strained, but the wires are ok. My nipples are sitting quite high up though that might be due to my shape. The back is too big - on the tightest hooks - but that's pretty standard for me. If I go up a cup size will the back be unwearably big? Do I need to exchange it and if so what size should I go for?

helpfulPersonally I think that this is a combination of a cut that is wrong for you and a not-quite-correct size.
You say yourself that you have shallow wide-set breast, for breasts like this padded halfcups work best. Fullcups and balconettes with a rim that closes towards the chest should be avoided bc they cause quadboob despite there being loose fabric in the cup.
What happens if you loosen up the straps? Does that free up volume in the cup? How do the wires feel too you? Too wide? Or too narrow? If the wires are too wide, go down in cupsize, if they are too narrow go up.
Try the padded halfcups from Masquerade and Cleo, Curvy Kate Tease Me/Thrill Me, Bravissimo and Parfait by Affinitas.

helpfulYou're right: the band is too loose for you. Have you considered a 26 band? If your dead-set on this particular bra (I don't think they have a 26 band), you can always take it in with a sewing machine. If you're looking for 26 bands, I know Ewa Michalak makes them.
Per the cups: I've heard that the ribbon is sometimes tighter than the rest of the bra. If that's the problem, you can just loosen the ribbon. But if the entire cup is too tight, then a 28GG should be okay in the cup.

I've heard about the ribbon too. It seems that this bra has a rapid closing cup.

helpfulYes, the back is too big. Apart from looking into Ewa Michalak, if you want something similar to this, try Curvy Kate Angel! It really has the same cut in the cups, but the back is a lot tighter and is the tightest Curvy Kate bra I've ever tried.
When it comes to the cups, yes they are too small. You can see the odd angle from where the cup ends and your bare boob continues on the boob at the furthest away from the camera. That odd angle is the beginning of the cup cutting in. Even in a G-cup Curvy Kate unpadded is quite full coverage and this style does run small so it is not strange that you need to get a larger cup size than this.
When it comes to the wires and they being wide, well, that is just the brand. Curvy Kate bras are quite wide and shallow in the cups. If you are more narrow and deep your might have more luck in another brand.
if you still want Curvy Kate I would suggest a 28GG Angel or a 28G Ella. The later is also super tight in the band, but does run larger and has a more open cup edge so you will most likely be able to wear a G-cup in that one.

I've returned this and am going to try "angel" as you've suggested, thanks for the hint! This was my first Curvy Kate bra and I didn't really like the black/hot pink combo (I thought it would be a paler pink) so I didn't mind returning it. Hopefully angel will fit better.
I'm going to try out Ewa Michalak soon too - I really need 26-band bras so it sounds great!

Sounds like a good plan. :) Just remember that some Ewa Michalak bras are super tight and some are quite loose. I have a couple of 30-bands that fits me well, even though I'm normally in need of a 26, and actually needs it in most styles. :)

helpfulSome ways to mod the band to be tighter:
Take in the gores: boobiusmaximus.livejournal.com/1474.html (You can also tip the cups this way, which can put them at an angle that cuts in less.)
Ribbon on the band: www.venusianglow.com/2010/07/tutorial-tightening-bra-band-without.html or www.venusianglow.com/2011/11/bra-band-tightening-tutorial-using.html
Shortening the band: hourglassy.com/2011/08/leahs-second-column-shrinking-a-bra-band/ (I do this with cutting rather than folding)I second the Ewa Michalak recommendation, and direct you to www.thinandcurvy.com/2011/05/where-to-find-26-and-24-band-bras-and.html
If you're interested in Ewa Michalak's 26 bands, I am contemplating selling my little-worn CH Cielus (http://bra.pe/Se5/) because my boobs have gone back down to their regular size.

helpfulThis may not be much of a suggestion, but if you have doubts about the 28GG being too big, you could try and compare your bra's measurements with the 28GG already on the site http://bra.pe/STB/ and see if there are any significant differences in the cup.

I agree t_maia - I tried the CK Angel in a 28GG but have had to return it as well. I more than filled the bottom but I couldn't fill the very top of the cup, the wires were too narrow and the straps were too wide-set, but going down a cup-size would have meant lots of spillage. I'm staying clear of 3-piece bras like this one from now on. I have the same problem in many Freya 3-piece styles - the cups are fine except for wrinking at the very top where the cup meets the strap. Thanks for the advice, I'll make sure to stick to the styles you've suggested.
