Bra fitting help » Will all balcony bras give me a football shape, or just this one?
Curvy Kate » Lottie Balcony Bra (CK1601) » 34JJ 34:14
Issue resolved
It may not be the style on me. The cup is too small. I'm going to try this brand/style in the next cup size up (34K). If that doesn't work, then I'll move on to other brands' balconettes.
Original problem
The cups on this bra fit great! Everything is contained, and the sides are high enough that the underwire doesn't poke into me. However, my boobs get a weird shape in this bra. My friend said they looked football-shaped, not rounded like she would expect from a balcony. I've only been wearing full cups since I started getting properly sized, and wondered if this issue on me was just the bra, or the balcony style in general.

helpfulIt's definitely not all balconettes. Maybe it's just me, but to me it looks like you could do with a size up since in the first picture it looks like you're bubbling out a bit. One thing you can do that might fix it is taking in the center gore, but that might make it too tight for you (based on how you measure around your ribcage).

helpfulOh, no, it should definitely not be all balcony bras. This is just a special, special present from Curvy Kate to those of us with soft breasts and/or over some certain size (H? I dunno what the cutoff is), lol. CK is known for doing this. Don't despair! Some people call it "upside down 7" shape.
Here is a good post about CK that might be helpful:
http://brasandbodyimage.wordpress.com/2012/06/Sadly I didn't take any pics back when I tried the Lottie. Trust me, it was as bad or worse on me
I would definitely recommend you try something from a different brand. Curvy Kate tends to have wide-ish wires, if this is good for you try a balconnette from Panache. Also take a look at Bravissimo's house brand, if you can deal with the international shipping hassle, they have a few balconnettes to choose from that come in 34JJ/K (you may need to size up in some).
So the news for you is bad, in that I know how pretty and tempting CK bras are, and I pretty much gotta tell you they most likely will all do this or worse. But good in that you should be able to find some bras from other brands that don't do this!

raspberryleaf: I just wanted to recommend the Jasmine too ;)
It's a great bra & gives a round, uplifted shape and it works for different shapes because of the stretchy lace on top of the cups.

Ahahaaa, I was about to do the same thing here :)) that and rant about the crappy curvy kate upsidedown 7 look :))
but I would also sugget the andorra in 36j.
And I think cleos might work in 36h or hh maybe?
Andreas vust doesn't look larger than georgina's i think.

I also think you are a great Elomie candidate - but this is where t_maia comes in ;) -
Oh, goodness, the Panache Jasmine is gorgeous!
I love Bravissimo, but being in the US, I've had some trouble returning ill-fitting bras. Twice I've had the packages sent back to me, and by that point shipping costs more than the bras. When I visit the UK next year, I am going to buy all the bras and pack them in my luggage home!

helpfulThis bra is too small for you. In this size Curvy Kate unpadded bras will cover up almost all of your breast tissue, which this one doesn't do. You are having some quadraboob even here, and if you where to tighten the straps a lot, so that you can't pull them more than 1-2 inches above your shoulders, this bra would give you a lot of quadraboob. I would say that you need atleast two cup sizes up, which doesn't exist, and, which most likely if it existed would result in the armhole cutting into your arms and the wires being too wide.
Thankfully Curvy Kate bras tends to run a bit on the small side so you might still be able to wear 34JJ/K in other brands, but, with a too small cup you will most likely always get a slightly saggy-pointy look. Just watch out for it and when you see it, size up.
You should also always aim for a bra where the cup depth is approximatly the same as your breast perimeter. In this case I think the cup depth is bigger than what you have measured, try to put the cup over your knee, pull the wires back so that you stretch the elastic at the armhole and then measure from wire tip to wire tip through the place where all three cup seams meet, along the fabric while making sure it's stretched. You might also want to put some extra stuffing in it, or, measure while you're wearing the bra.
Even with a potentially better cup depth measurement this bra is probably still too small for you.

Thanks for the suggestions on measuring the cup depth! The bra against my measuring tape was a little slippery, and I will definitely try your tips next time.
-
For the larger cup sizes in might be hard doing the whole distance at ones, just measuring half way and then move your hands and do the second half might be easier as well with a slippery tape. :)

helpfulJust agreeing with the other commenters- this is too small. Bras I Hate did a nice blog post on this with a sketch of how to tell if a Curvy Kate is too small - it looks similar to the shape you're getting in this bra.

helpfulThank you all for the recommendations, especially the links about CK bras and other balcony styles. I'm going to return this bra and try the 34K. If that doesn't fix the shape any, then I'll know that this just isn't the style for me. I won't give up on other balconettes!

Okay, I tried to resist. I can't do it, lol. Try Panache Jasmine :) (If you can find one, current model is sold out lots of places, but there's a new color releasing in a few months.) <---- tried to resist cuz I *ahem* may be getting a reputation for recommending this bra, lol. It's a really unusual combination of shapes and features, so that is why it's so popular, I think.
