Bra fitting help » Center gore stabs me, and all this wrinkling!
Curvy Kate » Ella Balcony Bra (CK1301) » 28DD 28:5
Issue resolved
I bent the wires away from my body, and once this was done, there was no more need for the straps to be so short.
Thanks girls
Original problem
Problems
1) All that wrinkling :/
2) not exactly gapping... the fabric lies flat on the edge of the cup for the most part if I don't slouch, which I'm not inclined to do because...
3) THE CENTER GORE. How it stabs me. Oh, the pain. Within 30 seconds of wearing it, it leaves a large red patch of poked sternum.
So my questions (and feel free to answer any questions I haven't asked):
1) Why does it wrinkle so? Is the cup too big for me in this style? Something else?
2)I don't exactly know if the center gore stabs me because it is too high or low. I have tried VenusianGlow's fix of pushing the wire way into the armpit area, leaving hollow case in the center gore. But it still stabs, especially if I don't push my chest really far.
It's also less painful with the straps shortened as far as I can without them being too short, but the wrinkles worsen.
Please help! I want to figure out a way to be able to keep this bra.

helpfulWell, now you know how a bra with cups that are too deep looks like.
As I already explained you have shallow breasts, so most bras that are too deep in the cup will wrinkle like this does.
With shallow breasts the size is determined by wire width. If the wire width is right, the size is right, you just need a different cut. If the wires are too narrow, go up in cupsize, bc then you might be looking at an orange-in-a-glass-effect.
To fix the stabbing centergore:
I think what might be happening here is that pressure from the band slightly distorts the wires. I can see this from the side view, the tip of the wire under your arms bends towards the back. Sometimes this causes the centergore to dig in at the sternum. Protruding ribs that push the lowest point of the underwire out might also be at fault. Essentially the wires and the centergore tilt towards your sternum and stab it.Try closing the bra on the loosest hook on the upper row of hooks and close it on the middle or the tightest hook on the lower. Alternatively close it only on the lower hook and leave the upper hook free.
But IMO no amount of messing around is going to solve the problem that the cups are just wrong. If you are determined to try an unpadded bra, you could give the Cleo Lucy a try.

Agree with everything t_maia says; would only add that if you're looking for unpadded bras with wide/shallow cups, Panache Melody Balconette and Panache Sienna might also be worth a look.
-
Me- The last thing I'm looking for is a wide bra, since for some reason every bra I try on has underwires that extend past my breast tissue by 1-2 cm at the very end of the underwire... Do you know of any unpadded bras that don't have wide underwires?
-
Ah, I see. I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions for bras that are both shallow and narrow, but hopefully other members will.

helpful1. I am not certain but I think at least part of the reason for the wrinkled cups may be because the band is too loose - you do mention that it is riding up. I would suggest if you can get a friend or your mum to help try pulling the band a little tighter from the back and see if it helps. Of course it might just be an incompatible shape (and you do also mention empty space at the sides of the cup) - I have seen this myself with some bras I have tried that appeared to fit but had odd wrinkling that I could not get rid of no matter how much fiddling or adjusting I did, but I can't help feeling that if you could pull the band a bit tighter at least some of those wrinkles will go away.
2. The center gore stabbing you is I think a combination of 2 things. This just seems to be the way some bras are - some poke more than others, but I have to say I have noticed this a lot more with Curvy Kate than with other brands. I also think the fact that you are thin plays a part since you have little padding under the centre gore you will feel the pressure from the wires more sharply. One way to fix it is to bend the ends of the wires slightly away from your body, however I wouldn't suggest doing that unless you are certain you are going to keep it - since you can't really send a bra back for exchange or refund if you have altered it.

I disagree, I think the wrinkling is due to the shape of the cup. :) It is cut too deep for her.
-
Mmmm, you could be right of course, have to see what she says. It was just a guess more than anything.
-
elfin- I was wondering if the band was at fault, but I was thinking since it's a 28, it might distort the wire and pull it away further from my boob tissue. Also, the bra is a hand-me-down from a kind redditor, so I'm not really too worried about not being able to return it since it's already too small in the cup for her XD I was considering bending the wires away, but I wanted a second, third, fourth, fifth opinion on this. And the skinny thing... I feel it may be that too.
t_maia- it's as if it's a whole cupsize bigger. Could it be that? But it wouldn't fix the gore poking, would it, if I sized down?
-
Sizing down is not an option here at all, if the wires fit. Only if the wires are too wide could you potentially size down. Carefully check for wire width.
-
The tips of the wires extend by a little past my breast tissue... about 1-2 cm. This was the case even with the M&S bra that you first helped me with. What baffles me is there seem to be no wires that are the right width for me.

All my Curvy Kates stab me in the sternum really painfully! And no other bra does that. The wires (of my bras) are not a) too high, b) too low c) not padded enough. It´s just the way they really dig in! I bended them and now am able to wear the bras...
-
Fairy79- did your Tease Me bra stab you too? I'm looking into getting that bra too. This makes me sad because I'm afraid if Panache, Freya (too stretchy) and Cleo all turn out to be to wide wired for me, I wouldn't know what to purchase next ._.

helpfulFYI, the black ELLA is much tighter on the band - maybe try that colourway and see if it helps any?
I must say though, that i have the same problem with the stabbing gore wires on my Ella - i think that the fabric is quite stiff and so feels more scratchy. i was hoping with wash and wear it would settle down, but mine hasn't i'm afraidUpdated on November 29, 2012 Flag this

Maybe next time, when I get to try them on in a store... this one was a hand-me-down so no returns or exchanges (the cup's too small for her now...)

helpfulI have a feeling that the wrinkles are because the straps are too short. The fabric is being pulled upward, which causes the wrinkly effect. As you noted, the shorter you make the straps, the worse it gets.
For the wires, try bending them away from your body.

That's exactly what I did. Also, I think you're right about the straps being short, because my back is aching right now.

helpfulMaybe you could try a 28D in this bra?

I might try that next time :D

I will try what you suggested and hopefully this remedies the wire problem!
