Bra fitting help » bra cuts into arms if move them forward

Issue resolved
Try a balconette style, likely down a cup size.
Original problem
The arm edge of the bra really cuts into my flesh if I move my arms at all forward. The cups wrinkle a bit. I moved the underwires in the casing toward the arms to rid it of a center poking, that helped. I'm 5'2 and have a short torso, so needed to shorten the straps a lot. Suggestions for a better short-person bra?

helpfulHave you tried a balconette shape or a half-cup? Also, are you looking for a lined, padded, or seamed (like what you are wearing) cup?

Since you mentioned it, I thought I'd let you know that this bra style is very much like the Freya style Venusian Glow says to stay away from in that post about shallow shapes. Well, in the exact words; "Don't even think of trying the unpadded Freyas."

helpfulI also think you should look at half-cups or balconettes. If the cut is right, I guess you do not need to go down a cup size - less material at the top that needs to be filled (but I'm not an expert at this).
I'd recommend
- Panache bras, especially Cleo Juna (and all the different colourful styles with the same cut, cups run a bit small), Cleo's unpadded balconettes, especially George (if you can still find it) and Marcie, but also Lucy, Brooke, Alexa ...
- Freya half cups (cups run a bit bigger in this size range), especially styles with the same cut as Summer, Monet, Libby
- Lepel Fiore Balconette and Plunge (the plunge cups are even wider than the balconette's)
- Ewa Michalak PL (plunge) bras
- Fauve half-cups, especially Merissa, Brianna and Celine (if you can still find them).
(Sorry about all the discontinued models in the list, but Fauves are hit-and-miss, so I wanted to give good examples.)Updated on March 26, 2013 Flag this

helpfulThe cup is too big for you! A smaller cup would help, but also, in general, any half-cup or balconette bra would work just fine. If your rib cage is 77cm, you could even try a 32C of most store brands, see how they fit. Also, anything with a smaller distance between straps would mean less chafing in the arm area...

Awesome responses, everyone! Any common examples of bras with a smaller distance to the straps? Apart from t-backs? I did just order a shock absorber racket style in the 30DD - since it's compression, hopefully it'll work. Thanks everyone!
-
Shock Absorber bands run really tight, I usually go up a band size and down a cup size, so I'm not sure that will fit.
-
Aww, crap. Whelp, maybe I add an extender for the first month or so. Do they tend to stretch over time?
-
Not a lot, really. The Racket isn't really all that good for breast like ours if I remember correctly. Like almost all sports bras it's a full cup, and you might not quite fill the cups in a 30DD.

TallSkinnyCurvy mentioned a smaller distance between straps could mean less chafing in the arm area. Anyone else experience going down a band size helping this? I have ordered a Cleo Rihanna and changed 3 variables all at once - new style, smaller band, smaller cup - SO we'll see how that works!

Strap distance has to do with model, not band size. Remember the 40s bras? Strap placement was different. Also, something with a rounder cup might mean the straps are closer to your body.

That does make sense. I had another look at the offending bra and it looks like the cut of it is the main discomfort culprit - needs a bigger "armhole". I do have a stupidly short distance between bust and shoulder. I try on shirts and dresses and it's clear it'd be the right fit if I pinched 2-4 inches out of the shoulder. C'est la vie.

helpfulThe Georgie plunge is for wide-set, shallow breasts, but the cup appears too large for you in the upper cup area. I agree with those who suggest a balcony or half-cup bra.

I have yet to try those. I was looking at the small breast, broad base advice from Venusian Glow and leaning toward getting one or both of those styles. Maybe down a cup size? I think I prefer less padding over more, but it has been years since I wore a bra on a daily basis, so I'm open to trying a range of styles. Hopefully I can find something that dosn't rub the but of underarm chub :)
