Bra fitting help » Underwires too high?
Curvy Kate » Entice Balcony Bra (SG1601) » 36GG 36:10
Issue resolved
Bra was too small.
Original problem
I got this from a fellow user and I'm not sure if it fits well. There is a problem with the underwires poking me in the arm pits, but other than that? I've been wearing & happy with a Freya Tartan Half Cup in a 36F & a Chantelle 36F that I can't find here on Bratabase, so sizing up in this seemed like a good idea, but are the cups too large? The band will probably get stretched out but I can fix that. =)
Thanks ladies!

helpfulI think that the cups are actually too small when looking at your side pictures (there's a lot of tissue there that is not in the cup) plus you mention the gore does not lie flat which adds to my suspicions; the gaping in the cup at the top is a shape issue of the bra; would you say you are more full-on-bottom?
A common thought is that the the cup is too large when it gaps at the top, but I believe it is shape here.
Edit: What user Uptight said. Curvy Kate tends to runs quite shallow and wide in the cups, you're are probably projecting so it's not a brand I would first recommend to you. If you want to check out if you are Full-on-top I would recommend the Cleo Marcie, as it is for quite full-on-top breasts. I thought I was full-on-bottom until I wore that bra - almost perfect fit, seems like I am very full-on-top.

Gapping at the cup rim and digging in at the underwire occur in cups that are too shallow either due to their shape or because the size is too small. The breasts force the cups forward at the apex, pivoting on the bottom of the underwires and thus causing the bra to tilt out at the top.
-
gotcha! like I said I'm totally new to this so I'm not 100% sure what I should be looking for. =) I'll probably be posting a few more fit checks on other bras I have that are coming and/or have already and get more opinions on other sizes and brands and shapes! thanks for the post and information!

helpfulHey there
Unfortunately it appears that the cups are too small which is causing the wires to be too narrow and sit funny on your side boob (that is breast tissue getting stabbed! Not arm pit!). The height would be fine if the wires went far enough back under your arm. The shallow shape of the cup contributes to this problem even more as the projection of your breasts forces the cup to sit even further forward on your body than it otherwise might.
You might see some improvement if the band was tightened up (you can try a Rixie clip or even some clothes pins to hold the band together in the back, perhaps by the base of the straps), but I'd put my money on the bra just being too small. Unfortunately this is the largest cup volume that this bra comes in, as Curvy Kate has a cup volume maximum on these bras rather than a cup size maximum which prevents sister sizing even if you wanted to.

Oh! I'm totally new at this, there is clearly so much to learn! do you have any suggestions for bras that don't have such shallow cups? or is there some sort of place I can reference? Is there a way to tell from looking at one? Thanks for you reply! it cleared some thoughts!

Cleo Marcie and Lucy have good lower volume and are great unlined starter bras; they're cheap, readily available, and serve as great diagnostic tools when trying to sort out your ideal cup shape. Based on your feedback from the breast shape quiz included under your measurements in this fit check, you might also do well in the Panache Andorra Full Cup.
Sometimes you can tell if a bra will be too shallow by hunting down a profile or half-profile sort of angle photo of it being worn. If the curvature from underwire to apex is nearly flat, then it will be hard to fit if you have lower fullness. If it is nearly flat from underwire to cup rim, the whole cup is shallow and will be rough to fit if you have projected breasts.
Often, catalog photos are so photoshopped (and the models are in such wrong sizes) that you can't discern anything useful. That's where Bratabase comes in to save the day :)

I totally agree with uptight You look like me in my first fit request here now soon a year old: http://www.bratabase.com/troubleshoot/dhik9/#suggestion-267
I ended up in much larger cups, but it also turned out my boobs simply had a much larger base than expected for their size and that I never could get all my root into the cups. My wires are best suited just before my lats but since my boobs continue up to my collarbones and are semi soft I got in trouble. In general I have decided on 30J as my best fitting size and 32J for shallow bras. Sort of. My go to bras are halfcups.
http://brasandbodyimage.wordpress.com/2012/09/05/putting-your-bra-on-properly/ Here's a guide about how to put on your bra :)
A way to try to see if you spill out of the bra is looking if you have armpit flaps hanging above the bra, then it's too small. It's like having quadboob but on the sides :)
Another way is leaning over when a bra on and see if you spill above the cups. Not necessarily out of the cups but above them. Then you often need a taller cup :)
Another rule; if your boobs are not very soft your required cup depth are usually quite close to your breast perimeter :)
-
Branarchist , what bras would you recommend in your size range for wires that wide? I love wires back in my lats but so far the only one I've found is the Panache Sienna which thus far has been too tall in the wires. The 36J is wearable if I'm willing to heal some welts and bruises for a couple days after; I have a 34JJ on the way to try but feel like I'll be losing a good amount of width along with the wire height going down another size even though I need the smaller band.
-
uptight Bravissimo halfcups. They has the widest wires. But sadly their wires are weak. I think you might be deeper than me because otherwise I might have suggested going up in Andorra size and alter the band down. I couldn't find pics of you in that in 34J. The 34J Andorra wires actually distorted on me when I tried to alter that band down. They are so weak compared to other Panache.
Also: Old CK bras, namely Emily. It runs larger in the cup than the other CK bras, also old Romance did so.
Oh and maybe try Sculptresse Bellise Balconnet Bra (6891) :)
-
uptight , the only bras I've tried that make it all the way around my root are Elomi Caitlyn Underwire Side Support (8030) and Elomi Cassandra Underwire Side Support (8160)
-
I tried the 38HH - Bravissimo » Rococo Charm (SB19) in Pistachio (however many seasons ago that is from) and it was far too shallow for me :( I adored those wires more than any of the other bras I've tried due to the awesome backslope, but the gore stuck straight out from my cleavage like a picket fence because it wouldn't tack and was taller than my breasts. Do the other Brav. half cups run similarly shallow? Are there any with a similar cup shape to the Cleo Juna (6461) ?
Photos in the 34J - Panache » Andorra Full Cup (5675) here: http://imgur.com/a/zsy9T
I'm actually quadboobing out of my Andorras now despite the stretch lace, so I'm not sure what my next move is going to be.
You're the second person to recommend to me the Curvy Kate Emily (CK5001) , so maybe that should be it.
-
Elphabra , thanks for the recs! I suppose I'll give those a go if they happen to be in stock at Nordstrom soon. I've been having a really bad time with Elomi lately. The coverage (and style :/) of the bras is really hard for me to work with on such a small frame and high root, plus I have doubts as to the quality control recently. I received a second Elomi Asia from the same retailer only a few weeks after my first one, and the underwires were well over an inch wider than in the last one I'd received in the same size - and that is on each side! It was the most bizarre thing: http://imgur.com/a/jWtcY
-
I couldn't tell you. The two bras fit totally different too. It's weird.
Here's the wider one when I first got it: http://imgur.com/a/Ngq61
Here's that same one after a few weeks of occasional wear: http://imgur.com/a/jEYQz
Here's the new one with the funny narrow wires: http://imgur.com/a/qTJYi -
Wow, that's really odd. I wonder if one of them got warped in transit?
I feel you on the coverage and styling, I am nooot a fan, but it is nice to have it for days I want to be comfier and not worried about whether I'm cutting off my root. Cassandra is old so you won't see it at Nordstrom, but Caitlyn is a staple, so they should be around. If you have a nordstrom rack, they often seem to have them. -
uptight I did try on the Lucy and the pictures here are mine (in purple): http://www.bratabase.com/browse/cleo/lucy-5851/36F/ Thoughts based on only two pictures? I had the same issues as with this one. The underwires were digging & I felt I was quadboobing on the top. I need a larger cup then? Thanks a TON for your suggestions. Everyone here is so supportive!
I also tried on 36F - Elomi » Caitlyn Underwire Side Support and I think it fit, but it was so high I couldn't wear it under any of my clothes, I guess my shirts are too low cut. I had also uploaded pictures of that one. =) -
It's really hard to discern anything without profile and angle shots, as those are where you can really see where the underwires are hitting and how the cups fit the slope of the breasts.
What I can see, though, is that you didn't have the underwires up in your inframammary fold. They're sitting at least an inch lower than they should be and leaving empty cup space down there. Is that just where you put the bra? Or did it slide down there after you put the bra on properly? Or would it never go up there to begin with?
Do you still have the Lucy laying around or did that get sent back?
And I totally feel you on the Elomi!! I tried wearing mine to work once and I was adjusting my tank top all friggin day so I didn't have little leopard print sticking out. Too much trouble.
-
Yeah I know! Sorry, I didn't think about getting fitting help on it at all so I didn't take all the pictures I should have (I might have more on my computer at home though, I'll check tonight in case). From what I remember (I returned it a week or so ago) it never sat where it belonged. I always have swooped & scooped (even in my non-fitting 40Ds, it just felt like all the tissue should be laying inside not squished or something...) so I'm 80% sure I did it, but I guess the cups were too small or not deep enough and I think I figured it was right? But the shape it gave me was ugly and that's why I returned it? I really liked it for the color though, so I'm totally for buying it again in a better size.
-
I tried the Lucy recently myself and had similar problems with the underwires staying put: http://www.reddit.com/r/ABraThatFits/comments/1espg6/experimentfit_check_panache_loretta_34j_panache/
In my case I think the wires were just too damn narrow, so my root was squeezing the bra down in order to find a wider spot in the cup and get compressed less on the sides. Perhaps your issues were similar, and if so then that bra probably will never work out for you :(
The Panache Andorra Full Cup is probably a great next step for you.
-
FYI, I don't know if it works if you don't get emails from them or not, but figleaves sent me the today only code 50EMAIL for half off just the Andorra.
-
I second Andorra. If you could try it in different sizes it would be the best. I think 36H would fit the best actually. Maybe 36GG, but I don't think you should go smaller. I think this bra actually looks a little like a hat on a head rather than a bra.
Also I think you might be more similar to me than to uptight, meaning you might run into quite bad fitting problems and needing a tighter band to make your bras work. But let's hope for the best :)
Andorra for starters and swoop and scoop your ass off :) Your tank tops might end up too small, not just the bra being too big, but your boobs might end up higher in a larger bra so you'll still have cleavage :D
-
Elphabra OMG I will try that code :O
-
Nope, not working in the UK ;/
-
Elphabra The code wasn't working for me in the US either. Oh well, thanks for trying!!!
Branarchist THanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate it! I'll look around for a 36H then & a GG. I hope I don't have the same issues! I'm currently wearing Freya Totally Tartan Padded Half Cup Bra (1423) in 36F and I thought it fit well, but I should probably post a fit check just incase. =)
-
UK Code is EMAIL50
US Code is 50EMAILI used the US code successfully about an hour ago :)
lechevalnoir , Branarchist , the Entice runs extremely small in the cup!!! At least two cup sizes small!!!! A 36GG in a different bra in the proper shape would probably fit too large by quite a bit.
-
I keep getting so confused! =) I'm going to wait until my other two bras (both 36Fs) arrive in the mail and see how they fit then decide what else I should buy! I try to do some research on sizing of each particular style too before I go out. =)
-
Haha that's a good plan :P
-
uptight lechevalnoir I base my suggestion on the fact that I think the Elomi 36F looks like a hat on a head :) I think it's too low and too narrow, just the way I fitted myself into say 34F - Freya » Millie (5920) 34F - Freya » Pollyanna (5922) I simply didn't only have a wider base but also a much taller base. It won't be possible to swoop and scoop that inside the cups without higher wires in the armpit. Half of the boobs is hanging above the cups on the sides. The quadboob happens in the upper outer quadrant on this kind of shape if that makes sense :)

-
uptight UK code doesn't work, sadly. However I might be better of yet another Andorra :D
-
Branarchist I love that Bravissimo! I might have to try one of those!

helpfulI think that the cups are too large. If you look in that last picture you put up there is quite a large gap between your breast and the cup (doesn't lay smoothly). This could affect the wire coming up too high. Going from a F cup to a GG cup is skipping 2 full letters. Are you quadboobing in the F cup? What made you decide to jump so many cups? If you were quadboobing in the F cup then I'd suggest trying a G cup instead of a GG cup.

I was debating bad and forth, I'd read that Curvy Kate was small in the cups and the price for this was right to try (there are no local places to try)! I was thinking the same thing though. Oh well!
-
Gotcha, I know that feeling well! I buy mine mainly online and totally run into the same problem - in fact I have one listed for a similar reason! :) If you were to try it again I'd try a G cup (esp if you were not quadboobing in the F cup) and this might fix the wire poking you. However, I'm not 100% sure about the wire part as I'm not an expert on Curvy Kate. I found wires on Ewa Michalak and Comexim to be lower on the sides and fit better on me (but they're even harder to find since you have to order them online!).
Maybe some of the other more seasoned bra ladies might know of some brands that don't have as high of wires for you to try! :)
-
Yeah, I might hang on to it for awhile though. I've heard that there is some migration? Maybe my boobs will get bigger?! I'm on a weight loss kick though so I don't think those go hand in hand... ;)
I'll keep my eyes out for a G cup though, I really like the way they look, I bought both black & white versions!
I have two more coming in the mail so fingers crossed they will fit better! =)
-
If you're wearing the proper size and fit AND scooping/swooping then migration could occur :)
good luck on the weight loss (and migration ;) )
but yeah that bra is beautiful!
-
I'm sorry but this is really incorrect. The sides of the cups are clearly digging in to breast tissue while the cups themselves don't have enough depth to fully encase the breast perimeter which is causing the gore not to tack. These cups are way too small. This is all exacerbated by a band that is far too big and will not hold the underwires in place properly. It is clear from the measurements of this bra that it does not run true to size, and isn't larger than a 38F.
-
It's totally possible! I looked at pictures of breast shape and kinda thought I was full on top, but it's very possible I'm not. I'm totally new at this! =)
