Bra fitting help » Tight band, cup wrinkling
Ewa Michalak » Pl Cielus (162) » 60GG 28:10
Issue resolved
Went up a band.
Original problem
I had the PL Stalowka in 60H and came to the conclusion that it was one cup size too big. I ordered the PL Cielus in a 60GG, since the style is very similar.
Fit issues: The band is very, very, very uncomfortably tight (tighter than the 60 Stalowka band). The gore digs into the top of my sternum. There is space at the tops of the cups, and the bottom of the cups wrinkle.
My concerns: I am not sure which of these issues are more at play... too tight a band, too big a cup, or fit incompatibility. I have concerns that sizing down will cause quadboobing in my larger breast.
Thanks for the help, ladies!

helpfulI think what's happening here is that the tight band is pulling on the wires too much, so they are distorting into a S shape and thus pressing into your sternum. Looking at this though, I think the area in the cup that you need isn't where it should be at. The bottom of the cups are wrinkling because there's not enough space for you there? (This could also be because of the cups being pulled too)
Did you try tightening the straps more and possibly trying an extender?
If that doesn't work, I think you would benefit more from bras with vertical seams more than this - at least from Ewa.Updated on April 5, 2013 Flag this

Tighten the straps!!!!! Again!!!! :)

Can somebody please explain to me what an s-shape is? O_o of course I know how the letter S is shaped haha, but in underwire issues? Say whaaaaat? *scratches head*

prettyNpetite : S-shape distortion, or wire torque, is what you get when you pull at the tips of the wires in opposite directions. perpendicular to the 'plane' of the wire. The 'plane' of the wire can be visualised as follows: imagine the wire laying flat on a sheet of paper. This sheet of paper is the wire's plane. Now pull the tips of the wire away from the plane in opposite directions: this is your S-shape distortion.
On the body it might be a little bit more difficult to see, but the same thing happens: one tip is being pushed outwards by the sternum and the other tip is pulled backwards by the too tight band.

helpfulTry it with an extender and snugging the straps a bit. If that fixes your issue, go with a band size one up from your current and a cupsize one down.

helpfulFirst, the colour of this bra works really well against your skin and I think that the shape could definitely work for you! However, this bra to me seems at least one band size too small and one cup size too large. The wrinkling in the cups is very likely caused by a too tight band: the excess band tension deforms the wires which creates pulling in the cups especially in that area, which is also backed up by the excess pressure on your sternum (see my reply to prettyNpetite on the topic of S-shape distortion). I therefore agree with the other commenters: try this bra with an extender (or two). As a tight band often makes the cups appear smaller than they are and a looser band makes them appear larger, I do suspect you'll find you may need to go down in the cups.
On a side note, I myself am a firm believer that one should aim for the loosest band that still provides adequate support, rather than the tightest band that is still more or less bearable (for some this might end up up being one and the same thing, but for others I do think there is a difference there), also accepting that one may not find the best fit at the loosest set of hooks. After all, human bodies do not exactly come in 2" increments

helpfulI agree. I think going up a band size and down a cup size would help. Thanks to other Bratabase users, I've learned that it's hard to tell what cup size you really need when the band is too small because of the wire distortion that occurs. If possible, try exchanging for a 30G or even 30FF. I also agree with MilkandHoney on wearing the loosest band possible that still provides adequate support. I also think we sometimes measure too tightly around the rib cage when trying to obtain our underbust measurements. I'm not saying that's necessarily the case for you, but I measured myself 27.5" only to be properly measured at 29" Having recently switched from a 28" to a 30" band, I'm much more comfortable. My girls are supported, but I no longer have red indentations around my rib cage, and my underwires are not distorted. It's a win-win.

I agree that the band is too tight, pulling on the wires too much. This probably pulls the cups out of shape, too, causing the wrinkling.
Try it out with an extender to see if the wrinkles disappear.
