Bra fitting help » Scoop and swoop = the cup too small, but it seems fine otherwise
B.tempt'd By Wacoal » B.wow'd Push Up Bra (958187) » 30C 30:3
Issue resolved
I'm exchanging it for a 30D. Thanks!
Original problem
When I do the scoop and swoop method, my cup overfloweth, but then I "settle into" the bra and it looks fine. Allegedly a bra should fit properly WITH the s'n's method, and if it doesn't that means the bra's the wrong size, right? But I've never had a bra that sustained my swooping and scooping, they always settle in.
(Note: the bad lighting + the scalloped edges make the spillage a little difficult to see, but it's enough to be obvious in person)
Should I exchange this bra for a 30D? keep the 30C? or just abandon it altogether?

helpfulI think sc/swooping makes the cup too snug + settling down afterward = too loose band
Does it come in a 28 sister size?

I think if the band is really stretchy (you commented in another suggestion), in this brand/style, you might have to have a 28. Some bras run tight, some much more loose, so it all depends on the individual fit.
Unless it was a great deal and worth it to have around as a backup, I'd return it.

Oooh.... I also suggest looking into Rixie clips and/or extenders if you're still newer to this all. They might help with understanding fit and also might allow you to use bras that aren't quite right but are close.
-
I have a Rixie clip! :] So far it hasn't worked so well, because it doesn't stay clipped and will slide back down the band. That may be a problem with band material rather than the clip itself, or I might be clipping it incorrectly? I'll keep experimenting with it.
-
Ooh! Happy to hear you have a Rixie clip, but sad to hear it's not working for you. :( I don't know exactly how it works, but I was hoping the 3-hook models would come out soon so I could try.
Please do post about it if your experimenting works out (or doesn't).

helpfulOkay, so the biggest problem I see is the picture 5/6.
There seems to bi more of your boob outside the cup than inside. The bra seems to be sitting a bit too low, you have some bulging in the armpit area and even though there isn't a clear side shot, I'd be willing to bet that the wires are also too narrow for you - I mean cup width of 12,7?! If you like this bra, I do think you should definitely try sizing up in this but I'm not sure if even two sizes would solve the wire problem. Other than that, I thinkthis might be useful to read, there are some awesome bra suggestions there

You mean that armpit stuff is supposed to be in my breasts?! Yes please, how do I get it to move back? (It's always up there, even braless)
I initially wasn't sure, but according to those links I definitely have shallow breasts. Thanks for those. :]

Well you meed a bra that gives more coverage from the side. What you can do in the meantime is try pushing the strap behind it, so it's at least in one piece, this way the bra is cutting it off and the problem would only worsen. The best migration bra I've seen so far is braologie, so that's another reason to look into it.

helpfulI wouldn't keep it. Umm... Do you have any idea why your boobs won't stay swooped and scooped throughout the day after swooping and scooping? It's obvious in one of your pictures that some of the breast tissue isn't contained. Near your armpit you have breast tissue that is not inside the cups.
How does the band feel? For some women the best fit is close to your own underbust measurement, and for some women it's better when it's like 2 inches + or 2 inches - your underbust measurement. For example... It says that your underbust measurement is 28 inches. You may feel most comfortable wearing a bra that stretches to 28 inches, OR you might be most comfortable wearing a bra that measures 26 or 30 inches, respectively (when stretched that is). It would help tremendously for us to help you if you added a picture of the back of the bra when you're wearing it! Could you please do that?
Please read these posts from Bras I hate and Love:
http://brasihate.blogspot.se/2013/03/why-i-believe-in-2-for-band-size.html
http://brasihate.blogspot.se/2013/03/follow-up-to-2-band-sizing.htmlShe received a lot of criticism for her first post on it but I do think she does make some valuable points, although I do NOT agree with her that bra fit is mainly about cup fit rather than band fit, in my opinion both are equally as important, but hey, I guess it's different for everybody. I strongly advice you to check through some of the comments she received on these posts because the commenters make valid points as well What I'm trying to do here is to make you a little more equipped with knowledge about how a band should fit ACCORDING TO YOU! It's all about comfort, but comfort shouldn't be compromised for support or vice versa. I do think you can have both comfort AND support! It all depends though, women with extremely big boobs might have a hard time finding both due to the lack of sizes and whatnot. I'd really appreciate a back view of you wearing the bra!
Why I'm so interested in how the band fits you is because I myself had problems with the the breast tissue staying swooped and scooped throughout the day. I've found that when the band is tight enough, the swooped and scooped boobies stay in place much better!

And oh! I'm not sure if you've seen this post before or not, but I think it's awesome for clarifying if your boobs are full on top or full on bottom! :)

Okay, I added two pictures. Both are shown with the band on the tightest setting. It feels comfortably snug, but it seems it stretches quite a lot (the bra is brand new, btw).
I have another bra that is a 30 that is painfully tight on me, even at the loosest setting, and while the scoop lasts longer, it does eventually settle anyway. That one has shape problems, though.
Thank you so much for all the help! I'm new to the world of correct bra fitting, so I've got a lot more to learn.

I would suggest you take a look at my blog post about how I swoop and scoop as well :) Not trying to promote myself haha, I'm just sincerely trying to help :) There's not a lot of videos out there showing you how to actually do it, so it posted one a while ago, here you go! :)

I can tell you from experience that swooping and scooping will NOT work when there are other fit issues related to the cup, even when the band is snug enough. It simply won't stay that way. It's like if you were to hug snow haha, no matter how hard you'd try to contain it, you wouldn't be able to if the pile of snow wasn't compatible with your grip (provided that there'd be movements tilting the snow to the side). The shape of the cups HAVE to be compatible with the shape of your boobs in order for the swooping and scooping to work.
I would repeat something that MilkAndHoney (I believe it was her) continues to advice; use a band size that is as tight as needed, not as tight as possible. As long as the band isn't riding up and you don't experience any back pain or any kinda pain related to the band, you're fine :) Wearing too tight a band can also have negative effects. The muscles can become strained from the pressure of the tightness. The ribs can be sore from the compression.... Rubbing and deep red marks that takes a long time to go away (more than like 30 minutes, I get red marks from bands that are way too big, but that's not a sign of tightness, it's just like socks leaving marks on your legs).
And oh, you're welcome! :) I'd gladly help because bra fitting is so important to me. I know how much a good-fitting bra can help you in regards to confidence and comfort! :)
-
Oohh, okay, that's all very helpful.
Sometimes I find that my bands ride up in the front, crawling up over my boobs, rather than pushing them up or riding up in the back. What's the deal with that?
-
prettyNpetite The full on top full on bottom thing doesn't really matter for shallow breasts usually. Even if you have full on bottom shallow breasts, you're going to want something open on top.
-
That actually makes a lot of sense, I've never thought about that before Jillsas. She could have a look just for the curiosity though :)
I used to get the "crawling up over boobs"-effect when I wore insanely too big bands and too small cups (not way too small though, maybe a cup or two). Hmm... I'm not really sure why that is in your case =/ I'm hoping someone else has a clue. It could be because of a band that is too big or cups being too small, or a combination of both. Hmm.... But you said the band was good so I don't know =/ It might be because the cup is slightly too small for you.

helpfulIf you have wide root shallow breasts there are lots of bras that will fit you better than this. If you like, you can have a look at my profile - all of the bras that I've put on Bratabase are ones that are recommended for this type of boobs and either fit me now or did before some of my beast tissue migrated. I'd try half cup bras next if I were you, something like the Cleo Juna (runs a bit small in the cups, so maybe try one size up, too).
I think a 30 band could be okay for you (if you're not very "squeezable" - I agree with brasihate here), but the fact that a lot of what you've scooped and swooped in escapes suggests to me that this band is too wide. A band that fits does not need to be supertight, so that you can't breathe comfortably anymore, but it should stay in place even when you do your wildest dancing. It should most definitely not ride up over your breasts!
It is normal, though, even with a fitted bra, that a little of what you scoop and swoop in escapes.
My armpits look like yours. I've always had this "bulging" there, even without wearing bras, and it hasn't disappeared after a year of wearing fitted bras, so yours might or might not be displaced breast tissue.Updated on April 4, 2013 Flag this

helpfulHi,
Before I start, if our advice our suggestions have offended in anyway, we apologize in advice. We are here to try and give straightforward and honest advice.
Bra fitting is more complicated than it really seems, since there are a lot of variables to consider, there is no checklist to checkoff to see if the bra is good fitted or not, it is more than that.
The question you should ask yourself is what do you want from the bra? If you want a bra that is fitted but not ill fitted, then this bra is ok for you since it is right for your breast size currently. Maybe one cup bigger since I see a bit of migrated tissue around your underarms but I do not know if the bra you are currently wearing can move that tissue back into your cups.
For you case, after swooping and scooping, the breast tissue didn't "settle in", it simply went back to it's original place since the bra design was not designed to hold and concentrate your tissue in place, so when you scooped your tissue from your underarms etc. after a couple of hours, the breast tissue just left the cups, but didn't settle in. Another reason that it left the cups and didn't stay is because the cups were too small pushing the tissue back to where you scooped it from.
If it did settle, you will see that your breast size being somewhere between right after being scooped and when you first put on your bra before you scooped. This is hard to visualize but I hope you understand what I mean.
You can actually be a lot fuller than in the pictures. All the breast tissue is just not concentrated enough for you to notice.

I see. I just bought the bra and am already using the tightest snaps, but it doesn't come in 28.
