Bra fitting help » too much extra space in top? Better to have different style?
Freya » Patsy Padded Half Cup Bra (1223) » 38F 38:7
Issue resolved
I need a different brand and/or style of bra. I will be returning this one and will try Bravissimo half cups and maybe some soft cup bras.
Original problem
I tried this bra in store. I thought it looked good in the store but when I wore it for a bit I noticed that the cups gapped when I moved. I also tried the 36F in store and the cup was definitely too small and the band felt better in a 38. The only way I could get the cups to fit well enough (still gapping but not too much) was by making the straps too tight. I like the underwire fit but am wondering if another style would fit better. I'd like to know where to go from this bra in Freya or if Freya won't fit me.

helpfulIt looks like the shape of the cup isn't right for you. It's wrinkling at the bottom because it's not deep enough for your full on bottom breasts. It's hard to tell, but in the angle shots, it looks like the gore might not be sitting flat as well. It is likely that you have firm breast tissue, because of how much the shape of your breasts and the shape of the bra fight eachother. That will make it very difficult for you to find padded or molded cups that work for you, since you need a pretty close match for it to work. I wish I had some specific suggestions, but I think you want to look for something with medium wire width and half cups that are deep at the bottom and not too tall.

Maybe I have firmer breasts than I thought... I might just have to look at stuff about breast tissue and figure it out....

As little as two months ago, I would have never considered my breasts firm. They've always hung very low when not in a bra, so I assumed I had less firm than average tissue, but now I believe this to just be because I have a narrow root and a lot of projection. If you find information on an objective way to determine breast firmness, I'd be very interested as well, as I'm never 100% sure.
If non-padded bras work for you, that is probably the way to go. They're more forgiving than structured cups.

helpfulHi sweetie
Could I suggest some small experiments?
Inside the wire channel push the wires out of the gore up to the wings instead. Also try this; hold in the gore with your fingers in front of a mirror as if you would alter it narrower. See what happens with the fit.
And another thing; that armpit fat above the cups, try to sweep it up on top of your chest and have the straps outside it instead of on it.
Also; if your boobs are not very very soft your perimeter is very very big compared to the cup depth and you might be wearing wires on boobs. That's why I want to see what happens when the wires comes slightly higher up in the armpit
I think you might be similar to me with wide root and narrow boobs and that's a complicated shape to fit to say the least. We are most often in between sizes ;/

I changed the cover picture to the one with the wires pushed towards the wings. I also tried to sweep the armpit fat, which is quite uncomfortable, actually. I'm guessing you asked to do that because you have some insight into what's happening there, so please share the wisdom. :)
I thought I was more on the soft side but now am confused about breast tissue firmness... But I do know that I've got a huge root to my breasts....
I tried moving the wire gore and I felt that it made the gap worse and it felt too tight on the sides.
Do you have styles or brands you'd suggest? That's really what I was going for in this fitting post- should've had a different title.

I'm guessing Bravissimo halfcups might be a good bet. I think you have perfect halfcup boobs actually.
Now to the problem; Bras are not made for wide rooted narrow breasts. Instead we have to find our ways around it. Which is sad. The way I do it is like this; http://www.bratabase.com/profile/353/adventures/1751/ I simply size up, get it all into the cups, side tissue and all. It does however get me into new problems because the cups are not made to fit like that so the wires distorts their way into the gore. But I've found for me it's the only way to make it proportional for my both very very wide, but also equally tall root.
So my suggestion would be; try both bra fitting methods. Both tucking it all into cups, ant the one you're trying now.
I would suggest trying a 38FF Bravissimo halfcups. They are the least interfering with the breast root and it also pushes the boobs forward and up with the side support panel. 34HH - Bravissimo » Mademoiselle Bra (LN110) to me feels a little like a corset.
Those wires are so flimsy so they don't bother me a lot.
Another experiment; try lifting the cups as if the strap would be in a more centered position. See if you have a too small cup. Like in these pictures; 32J - Bravissimo » Sweet Bon Bon Bra (LN163) I actually think the bra might fit if you would move the straps and took in the gore slightly. Oh and take the wires back up in the gore, I was just curious :)
On some flimsy wires makes them impossible to wear but on narrow wide rooted boobs with a perimeter like yours and mine it shouldn't be too hard.
I have a 36G - Freya » Piper Longline (1233) and it fits slightly similar to this bra on you I think :) But since the cup depth is too little for me the gore won't tack. I need around a 34-35 cm cup depth.

I think it'd fit if the straps were it a different position also. I just really don't trust my sewing skills and I'm not sure I want to spend that much just to make this one bra fit me.
The gore problem- I also have wide-set boobs. so the gore really can't be that close for me in order to fit. It's why I thought I was so much smaller-- there was no cleavage so I "obviously" was "flat" (so glad I read bra blogs now...) Basically, I have lots of problems with bras to overcome. I'll have to try the Bravissimo. I just wish that UK brands were sold more widely in the US...

megstro Oh, so you can wear wide gores? I'm splayed but look wide set. I cannot wear wide gores. But I've also found sometimes a tacking gore isn't necessary. If it "almost-tacks" it's quite safe for me :)
One more thing; there's some different ways of know what cup depth one needs. I have a crazy way of determining mine; I take a tape measure and put it on naked boobs standing up and see how much I can squeeze them before it becomes uncomfortable. Then I know how tight cups I would want.
Another thing you might want to try is Panache Andorra Full Cup (5675) or Curvy Kate Emily (CK5001) They both have a quite spread volume. Andorra is a bra one can size up and down in a lot to find ones best size and sometimes wear more than one size for different fits :) It also won't show if the bra is too small or too big because of the stretchy lace :)

I really don't have firm breasts... I think it looks that way because they are super wide set and so they have to move a lot to get into a bra shape. I'm actually pretty sure I have softer breasts other than right at the bottom which is a little denser.
I didn't even notice the bottom haha I should really look at pictures when I try fitting stuff...
I was unsure about the gore- the fabric actually made it difficult to see because I felt the gore and it felt like it was sitting flat. I think the pic you're looking at is the one that was a little wonky because my arm is up... I'll have to double check though.
My current favorite bra (which I need a cup size or two up in, actually) isn't a cup so maybe I should just steer in that direction?
