Bra fitting help » straps digging into shoulders cleo lucy
Cleo » Lucy Balconnet Bra (5851) » 30GG 30:10
Issue resolved
I have low set breasts. Straps just won't adjust long enough.
Original problem
This bra seems alright in the cup, and the band. I've been wearing 32FFs, but decided to try a 30GG since my 32FFs seem small in the cup/ loose in the band. (30" underbust, 39" overbust).
The problem is the straps. They are so tight, even on the longest setting, and they dig into my shoulders. I can't figure out why this would happen, it doesn't seem to happen to anyone else with this bra.

helpfulYou look like possibly your breast root sits lower on your chest and/or you have a longer torso, so therefore need longer straps. The straps on the Lucy are fully adjustable aren't they? I have not experiemced the problem myself. I am quite short and usually have the opposite problem, particularly if straps are only partially adjustable, that I can't get them short enough.
Just aside for that, in your 4th pic, it looks a bit like the wire is digging into your breast root at the side. How do you find the width of the wire? And did you do the "Swoop and Scoop' that is recommended to get all the breast tissue into the cups? If you haven't and do, you may find the cups are actually slightly small.

Yes! tell me about it. Its not enough just to get the right size, but the right shape and cut matters too! So even when I think the size is right, then the shape or cut is an issue! I believe Lucy is one of the wider wired of the Cleos. Have you tried any Panache superbra line(Panache make cleo).. they do have wider wires also. You may find some of the new styles of Curvy Kate better as they are starting to make them not quite as wide and a little deeper. The Portia in the seafoam and the Gia in seafoam , also the Romance in grey/seafoam and the Princess in Orchid are all supposed to have the newer cut as does the Blush and Hot pink Smoothie. The standard(black, white, beige) are also eventually supposed to have the new cut, but at the moment not sure if any do. All the new colourways coming out should I would think. Trying to think of other brands or bras that may be suitable with widish wires...

Just wanted to say NaturallySo said exactly everything I was thinking, and also, do you have sports bras that you are content with? I'm thinking that you maybe would do well in the Enell :) My boobs are full on top and high on chest. You seem to be exactly opposite of me, which makes me believe it'd be a good candidate for you :) I'm not sure that's something you're looking for right now, just wanted to tell you about it :)
If you want more in-depth info about it, how it fit me (to get a better picture of how it might fit you since we're the opposite), here's a link to a review of mine :) http://prettynpetitej.blogspot.se/2013/06/enell-nooope.html

All what has been said I sign although I would double check if the wires are sitting directly in the crease of your boob. You might not be *that* low on chest after all ;)

Vee , good call. I was going to add to double check that, but forgot. It doesn't appear to be sitting too low to me from the angle, but not always easy to see and defintely something to check also:)

Good tip Ladies! I did make sure the wires sit right at the crease, that was my first thought too. Maybe my torso is long :-/

helpfulThe wires dig in. I think you might try a bigger cup, because too small cups makes straps too short. I have bras like that in my drawer, they are wearable, just they look differently then my right size. Because the cup is in fact too small it covers less skin and the straps need to be much longer (as the cup ends lower).
If you think it's impossible, because the cup fits - well, it looks like a pretty adjustable cup, and in fact not all of your breast is inside (because wires dig in on the side).Updated on July 1, 2013 Flag this

Interesting, I'll consider that. Thank you!

helpfulHave you considered going up one sister size (32G)? Bra straps scale with band and cup size.
The Lucy is known to run tight in the band, so most people find they have to go up one band size from their usual size. The band looks really tight in the pics too, perhaps tighter than neccessary.
I have a 71cm ribcage measurement and a 30 Lucy still fits snugly; so a 32 might work for you (as far as I can tell from your measurements).Updated on June 29, 2013 Flag this

I have been wearing I with an extender at varying amounts of band length. Doesn't seem to help too much unfortunately
-
I am not saying an extender would change the length of the straps (that would make no sense ;) ) but that the straps in a 32G would be longer than in a 30GG.
Bras are designed to fit certain body shapes, so if you go up a band size, not just the band changes but the overall construction is slightly different. The bigger the band, the longer the straps (because the bra is designed to fit a body that's not only wider, but also taller). That's what I mean with 'scaling' (but maybe that's not the right word).
Sorry if that wasn't clear enough.

I was thinking a 32G would have the same cup volume as a 30GG, so a 32G would not be much better than a 30GG in terms of strap length. I was thinking cup volume, as opposed to band length, would play a bigger role (since there is more/taller fabric panels). I've never really thought about how bras are scaled with different sizes though..you raise an interesting point. Bras confuse me more every day :(

Hi! Thank you for your help! Yes, I do the swoop and scoop, and the straps are fully adjustable. I had been trying Curvy Kate bras, and found the wires on those way too wide. Someone suggested the Cleo lucy since it's wires are narrower. But I think you are right, maybe they are a little too narrow. I'm also thinking part of the reason these straps seem so short, is because they are so wide set. I have to angle them accross my torso so they don't slide off my shoulders. This angle requires extra strap length..length I do not have to spare. And perhaps my torso is long-ish, although I'm only 5' 6". Why is it so hard to get a bra to fit right?...sigh
