Bra fitting help » Outer quadboob in the cup
Freya » Thimble Cottage Padded Half Cup Bra (1613) » 30D 30:4
Issue resolved
Going to try something with a little more projection and narrower wires
Original problem
So this unlined bra is actually pretty comfy, but it's like there's a line drawing down from the straps to the cups. It's halving my breasts on the outside, and while not visible from the top it's pretty obvious from the side. The straps don't dig into my shoulders, and lengthening the straps didn't help. The edges of the cups lie flush outside and inside, and they're filled out- it's just the shape that's wrong. I did try another unlined bra (Tanya from Parfait) which also had shape issues, though not the outer quadboobing. Should I just stick to padded/molded bras?

helpfulhow far does the band stretch too? it's not listed on the measurements... do you think it being tighter would help smooth out the cup?

measuring it should damage it, if your pulling the band out so hard that it damages it, then i don't think that's a good number to go by.... but i've noticed with freya that the band was always "baggy" on me on the sides underneath the armpit area, no matter how tight i made the band... just wondering if it's a shape issue???

I do think it's a shape issue, actually. runs_with_scissors had me thinking this bra might be too wide and shallow- which, can bottoms of cups wrinkle not because I'm shallow but because the cup is? A bad past fit made me think that I was shallow but maybe it was the opposite problem.

helpfulI think it might just be a hair big and not the right shape. Maybe something a little shallower would be the way to go. I don't think you'd need to avoid unlined bras altogether. Unfortunately I'm blanking on shallow unlined bra suggestions right now. I'd be curious what the same cut in a 28D would be like on you, your measurements look like you might be able to wear a 28, or at least try one on to see if going down in the cup gets a better fit since this bra doesn't come in a 30C.

I do waffle between 30D and 30C depending on the bra, so maybe. But as I've said in the post this fills out pretty well, though looking at the pictures now the bra does look a bit big. Huh.
I was under the impression that shallow breasts in projected bras led to empty fabric so the outer quadding threw me off. Good to hear that shallower unlined bras could fit me better, do let me know if you think of any suggestions! -
I'm not sure that it would fit you at all, but when I was browsing listings here I noticed that there's an unlined Marks and Spencer half cup in a 30C that might fit you. It has quite a wide looking gore, but it's a giveaway so it could be worth a go. I will note that the one M&S bra I tried was a super weird fit for whatever that's worth.
runs_with_scissors makes a good observation that maybe you actually need narrower wires. I can't tell from these pictures where your root is so I can't really say if this bra is too wide or not.
-
Honestly figuring out where exactly my roots are is the hardest part in figuring out bra fit, at least for me. I'm mildly squishy everywhere so I'm never too sure if wires are pressing on boobs or normal fat. I hear having underwires on breasts hurt and I've never experienced that so far, so maybe I do need to try narrower wires.
Thanks for the tip! I did check it out and will send a message. If it doesn't work out I figure I can put it back into circulation at Bratabase :)

helpfulIn the pictures I only see wrinkling on your right cup, is this correct? Does the other side look smooth?
This happens to me, where some of my bras only wrinkle on the right cup. In my case it's because my right boob is slightly smaller, more projected, and higher set than the left. As long as the bra fits your bigger side there isn't a lot to worry about. If the wrinkling is bothersome or shows through clothes, a small pad or "cookie" used on that side can help even things out.
Wrinkling like this can also be caused by the cup being wider and shallower than the breast. In the pictures, it looks to me like this might be happening. The outer edge of the cup is farther back into your armpit than it needs to be. If this is the case, a slightly narrower/more projected bra would be a better shape match for you.
If this bra fits your left side better, then I would say it's a pretty good fit compromise, because a narrower cup would have the underwire resting uncomfortably on breast tissue on the that side. A too-wide wire is better than a too-narrow one.
As to sticking to padded/moulded bras, they certainly can help hide fit issues or unevenness, and many people prefer them. It's all about what you're looking for in a bra. I am in a similar size range and I have my reasons for avoiding padding.
ETA: I just read your review of a Parfait unlined bra, and it sounds like you and I had similar problems with them (I tried the 30D - Parfait By Affinitas » Janet Wire Bra (4602)). Some of your reviews reference some possible unevenness. Hello, boob twin! I'm thrown off by your comment on that review about the underwire not being far enough back into your armpits, though. Perhaps there is something I'm not seeing in the pictures, or you have more tissue under your arm on the other side. (I know I do too!)

My right boob is the smaller boob, yes! But the quadding is present on both. The vertical seam on the cups divide my boobs into slight 3 shapes. It doesn't hurt, though I can't say how it will feel after extended wear. Now that I think of it though, I believe I took the pictures pre s&s. I just tried it on again after swooping and scooping and both cups are smooth.
Oh man, I'm getting conflicted messages in the comments. Should I go shallower or more projected??+Reference to edit: Ah, the cups not being wide enough comment would have been when I was confusing my axillary tail with boobage. I'm still new and figuring things out. Hi back, boob twin!

I'm so glad the s&s helped! Hooray for smooth cups!
I do see that you are getting conflicting advice. It's common for people in our size range to have a wide, shallow breast shape. The Freya half cups are wide, shallow bras. I am unusually narrow and projected and I recognize it when I see it, and it looks like you are based on these pictures.
Maybe this will help you determine which is correct for you:
After swooping and scooping, wear the bra for 3+ hours. Take it off and examine yourself in a mirror. How do the underwire marks look? Are they lined up with the sides of your boobs? Or are they way outside of where you have any breast tissue? Sometimes it can be difficult to tell where the sides of your boobs are, this is normal. That is how I started to see that I really have no breast tissue under my arms, and most bras (except my beloved 60E - Comexim » Coco (381)) leave underwire marks 1/2" - 1" beyond what I would consider to be my actual boobs.
-
I never thought to use marks to pinpoint where my boobs end! Whyever not, that's pretty solid advice. Thanks!

If you are planning on returning this bra, sometimes you can have very slight wire impressions from just a try-on. Or you can try it with any of your bras!
-
So seeing the imprints this bra turned out to be too wide after all, but to my surprise several of my other bras were too (!) It's just that being unlined this bra highlighted the width problem. I assumed I was shallow all over because my breast tissue start high-ish, but apparently not.
-
I have tissue nearly up to my collar bones, too, but none on the sides. Tissue can be tall and narrow.
I hope you can get some good recommendations for narrow bras! I would suggest Comexim although ordering from Poland takes some time (about a month). The half cups are known to be "wide" in larger sizes, but I find them narrower than anything else in our size range, comfortable, a good shape match, and not too expensive. I am also trying to find a perfect Mimi Holliday bra. Sigh.
Take a look at bras that have and have not worked for me: http://www.bratabase.com/profile/ivc/bras/
My rib cage is 26.5" and my breast perimeter 7" so you are probably a sister size up from me in a lot of bras.

This is a great post on wire width, I was having a horrible time figuring out where my boobs started/ended. -
runs_with_scissors I did look through your bra list for reference, and I'll be revisiting in future. Good luck with your hunt for the perfect Mimi Holliday ;)
Sc2401 Thank you for the link! I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one to have trouble figuring out where boobs start and end.

I didn't want to stretch it since I was planning on returning it- but hooking it tighter doesn't help with the denting :(
