Bra fitting help » Unsure if this looks how it should, straps fall down

Issue resolved
Turns out I'm a 34 or 36 and not a 38! oops.
Original problem
I'm not sure if it looks how it's supposed to, and the straps constantly fall down (although this happens with EVERY bra I have so it may be me and not the bra). The top also juts out.

helpful36 bands are definitely a good idea to try in your next few bras. I see significant gapping at the top parts of the cups. This means that either the bra is too large in cup volume overall or it means that the bra is too FOT for you. I saw the list of bras that you have added and you have marked the 36D Vassarette bra as "fitting". Maybe try to figure out your root breadth, level of projection, and whether your shape is FOT/FOB/neither, then try on some bras in 36D instead?
***Edit*** Now that you have informed me that the bra calculator put you at 36E in UK sizing, maybe look at 36D, 36DD, and 36E so you can have a good feel for what styles and brands fit you in what size.
***Second Edit*** Now that you have listed your 5 measurements 36DD and 36E are definitely the sizes to try in the future. I still recommend that you use the Shape Guide to figure out your root breadth, level of projection, and whether your shape is FOT/FOB/neither.
***Third Edit*** If you are unsure of your root breadth and level of projection, I recommend just trying a bunch of bras meant for FOB shapes and seeing if anything fits. Cleo Lucy is good for projected, narrow rooted, and far apart spaced. The Freya padded seamed half cup styles are also good for FOB. Then there are the Freya Arabella/Siren/Ooh La La which are good for projected and narrow rooted. If you're shallower and broader rooted, Thirdlove's Plunge Perfect comes in 36E (which is their idiosyncratic equivalent of a standard UK 36DD). Aerie also has some styles in 36DD and 36E (which they market as 36DDD) that are broad wired and shallow: the Hannah, the Blakely, and the Bridget.

if you look, tho, saskia, stretched band is 34.5, so maybe they are a +4 sized company?
Lemons, there's definitely a shape mismatch here, but it would help if you added your breast perimeter measurements. Those measurements are supposed to be approximately the same as the cup volume measurement, so its easier to help you troubleshoot if we have all the data!
It looks like the bra is not projected enough and too wide, but its hard to see much in molded/padded bras

People on Reddit also said I should try 34DDD US but I'm fat so I don't know if the 34 would work
EDIT 1: dbmamaz I measured my perimeters. Horizontal is 12 in, vertical is 10.5 in, and lying down is 10in. -
I think a good cleo marcie is always helpful because you can see your shape more . . . but in marcie you'd definitely be a 34 or 36 band, not a 38

I'm at the moment talking with a girl on here about buying her Cleo Kali in 36E (UK)

So, fat is how much fat you are carrying, but band size is a combination of your rib cage and your fat. When you measured your rib cage, you measured between 33 and 36 inches. So a 38 inch band should be too big.
there are plenty of skinny ladies here who were 28 and 30 bands, 34 is not tiny. its kinda midling imo
You should be able to fasten the bra on the loosest set of hooks, and try putting the bra on upside-down and backwards, so the cups are hanging down towards your but, so you can see if the band itself is fitting, without having the cups and your boobs interfere. the band should fit snugly around your rib cage right under your boobs. Start with the band, and then find the cups that fit.

When I went to Lane Bryant they measured me at a 38D though... Why would they get that wrong?
-
lustforlemons Generally speaking, don't trust the major brick and mortar retailers. Places like VS, Aerie, Lane Bryant, and most department stores just want to put you in any bra to increase sales.
The most trustworthy way to get accurate measurements is to do them yourself manually. If you could state your 5 measurements I may be able to give you a better estimate than 36D/DD/E.
-
I think my 5 measurements were 33,35, 41, 41, 40
-
lustforlemons I made a second edit to my original comment.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm definitely FOB. I keep looking at charts for the root stuff and projection but still can't figure it out because ABraThatFits only had pictures of it with very petite women.

lustforlemons I made a third edit to my original comment with suggestions in it.

dbmamaz I tried your tip on the 36 and it works great! welp, guess I spent hundreds of dollars on the wrong size :/
EDIT 1: I tried it with the 38, and it fits snugly around my ribs but I can move thefront (on my back) up and down pretty easily
-
the reason stores put you in the wrong size is that they dont HAVE your size. Most stores dont have anything past a DD. So they go up a band to fit your breasts - because a 34DDD is the same cup volume as a 36DD, for example.
Most of us buy our bras on line . . . amazon, for example, often has free returns. or you can buy really cheap used bras on ebay to try on until you find what works

helpfulA 38 band is definitely too big for your rib cage, and the cups look a little too big too (but that's hard to tell for sure without a snugly-fitting band). When you have a snug band and cups, straps will stay on your shoulders I used to have the exact same problem with EVERY bra and would always be hitching them back up, even though I'd adjusted them as tight as they could go!
Your ribcage measurement suggests you'd fit better in a 36 band, or maybe even a 34 in some cases. I'm tempted to say try a 36d but it's hard to judge without measurements and because moulded cups like these can obscure shape and fit somewhat.
I wonder if you've ever used this bra calculator before? http://www.brasizecalculator.tk
If you enter your measurements in the box on the right of the page, it'll give you a pretty accurate estimatation of your size.Updated on April 19, 2016 Flag this

I have a 36D t-shirt bra and it distorts my breast tissue pretty weirdly as my tissue is soft/fluid. That's the calculator I used at first and it put me at a 36E
-
Ah that's good to know :) also after I posted I noticed you've already got lots of useful info! Saskia_C 's suggestions are spot on. Cleo Lucy is a good bra for diagnosing shape and fit issues; if you tried that in a 36DD or E and posted another fit check, you could clarify any fit issues that are hard to judge from this bra :)

helpfulYou've gotten a lot of helpful suggestions already... I would add,
1/ take your lying down breast perimeter to enter into your measurement chart. Make sure the breast mass is balanced on top of you body instead of slumping to one side as this most closely approximates the perimeter of your breast when compressed in a well-fitting bra. Your ideal cup depth will be close to your lying down perimeter, in most cases.
2/ A band that is too big will distort the fit of every other part of the bra. Even the too-wide straps can be due to that--a 38 is made for a woman with a wider build and the designer has assumed a wider torso and much bigger shoulder width than what you have.

helpfulTry a 34F? It might help with your fitting issues.

Hi, thanks! Yeah, in terms of band size the 36D is a lot better, but I get a weird thing where my boob sort of folds in on itself on the tops. I don't know why I put that it fit I'm kind of new to this :/ according to the bra calculator I found on Reddit I'm around a 36DDD US... I don't quite believe that though.
