Bra fitting help » Doubling up on cookies for small boob instead of sizing down?
Ewa Michalak » S Opium (825) » 70J 32:13
Issue resolved
Decided to do the 2 cookies, but the smaller boob's strap ended up being slightly wider set making it an even crappier fit than it seemed at first, so I sold it.
Original problem
I received my order of several ewa 70Js, and was concerned they wouldnt fit since a 70J S Grace was super big on me. The PL I got fit PERFECLTY, better cleavage than in my 65HH PL
However I have some issues in the S's. They fit my larger side perfectly with the cookie, and my smaller side perfectly with an additional cookie. Theyre so gorgeous and comfy, so I'm just morbidly curious how big a fitting faux pas this is?
Also, I'm noticing a lot of extra room on the sides of the cups. Not sure if there's much I can do about it? I'm sure that's contributing to the fit issue.

helpfulSo are you getting this good fit (with 3 cookies) with or without an extender, since you marked the band too small? A too-tight band can make an excessively large cup appear to fit, but pulls it too wide, exactly like you're describing.
I don't think it's a bad thing that you get a full coverage look with these, but I agree between all the compromises (bands a bit tight, cups a bit big, lots of cookies) I would tend to think you'll end up not being optimally comfortable.
I do notice from your bra list that you have a lot of Ewas (wide-set straps) and a lot of CKs, Parfait, etc. which are wide cups and a shallow fit. These all seem like choices suited to a person with a broader frame than your own. THe fact you are high-set with narrow root and 11" frame makes me think you have a petite build and maybe that is the factor you need to take into account for the fit to really work?

Yes I understand it's 3 total, if you had 3 on each side I think we'd all be begging you to either size down or just buy those large chicken fillet pads which are better for comfort ;-)
To fit a narrow build you have to look for bras where the entire "front" of the bra is narrower, i.e. narrower cups, ALLLL the volume of the cups is in front of the body, must allow for your natural center fullness, cups not too far apart, and straps must also be fairly close together in order to fit on your small frame while still being worn vertical instead of on a slant, which is less supportive. I'd do a search by measurements here and see what you find. You would definitely appear to need a cup width under 6", possibly closer to 5.5", and if this 11.5" cup is bigger than you need I'd look for depths just under 11".
I had that exact same misconception about my shoulders until I was at least 30--I carry a good bit of weight in my upper arms so I don't look petite up top, but my actual shoulders are tiny (like if you took an X-ray and just looked at where the shoulder joints are I mean!) My ribcage is also smallish and fairly round, so there isn't much width at the front of my body, and I have no projected breast tissue on my sides at all, in fact it ends almost before my sides "begin" if that makes sense. This makes my boobs extremely projected while also making it impossible for the straps of a typical UK or Polish balconnet to hang straight down on me--if I were to hold the straps straight up from the cup at the angle they're supposed to be, they'd be sitting about 1-2" out from my actual shoulders!
-
rofl! that bra you're describing sounds perfect lol! My breast tissue does the exact same thing lol. I noticed that yesterday with the straps on this bra, they really do want to sit right over my actual shoulders. For me I think its because I have super narrow hips, and it makes me look broad shouldered.
I did a search like you said and I'm seeing a lot of freyas, which in my experience are super tall in the cup. I used to wear decos and they were full coverage on me. Do you think I could move the straps in on the ewas? I did it with a comexim and it kinda messed up the shape, but that was a soft bra, perhaps ewas could hold their shape? Have you found any brand with narrow straps? -
So, long story short, I noticed that the strap on this bra on my smaller side is 9.5" from gore to edge of strap, but on my larger side (better fitting side) its about 9" from gore to edge of strap. I think this combined with my arms hitting the straps is making it gap, because if I just hold the cup to my boob the volume seems correct. So would it be a horrible idea to move the strap in?
-
I can't say with confidence... moving straps in is possible, if you google Ewa bra moving straps you'll see blog posts and such showing people have done it before with varying levels of success. I don't know if it is really worth it here though, frankly because there are already several other things about this bra that make it less than optimal. If you are in the United States I'd actually recommend you go to a Nordstrom and just for the sake of seeing a better fit with centered straps, try on a few Chantelle full cup unpadded bras in 32H, 34G or thereabouts... the traditional full cups have quite narrow-set straps.
-
I think chantelle is US sizing? Theres no way I could fit into that lol.
-
A Chantelle Rive Gauche 32H/34G for example is about 11" deep, about 1/2" less than this Ewa bra which is too big. So I'd say it is worth a shot!
-
The cup depth hasn't worked for me in the past, I have 11.5 and 12" cup depths that I quad out of and that fit, respectively. I think it has more to do with cup height and strap width, but those arent measurements so I'm not sure. (like the S Grace has 11.5" depth, but its HUGE and no amount of cookies could fix it. The straps are also super duper wide set.) I had a 13" depth that fit, no discernible difference with cup width or wire length etc. I'm sorry if I'm rambling lol, this is probably my more frustrating round of bra buying -_-
-
chantelle is EU sizing. Since EU cups go in different increments from UK cups (the jump between cups is bigger) you can't make a direct correlation between cup sizes. it sounds a lot smaller in letters but wendybien is right that it would probably fit you really well and also that the straps would be way more centered, although they are not as colorful as EM. i would probably try a 34G/H first though in chantelle as i'm pretty sure 32 would be too tight and cause you to quad out of the correct cup size.
but i think you could fit just fine in EM also, just in a couple cups smaller and a band or two bigger.
-
I also want to add on the depth, that the width also affects how the depth fits and a bra can be deep enough but too closed off on the top and cause quadding. I'm pretty narrow. I guestimated about 4.75" (most bras in my size are between 5.3-6") would be optimal in wires but I just got a bra that is 4.5" and it's perfect width wise. When the wires are closer to fitting my actual shape I don't need as much depth. I have a gossard plunge that very open and the straps are bouncy and I can get by with less depth on it too because of the give in the cup to be pushed outward.
P.s, but I can see why you want to make this bra work. It's very pretty. Chantelle does have a lot of pretty bras too though not that look like this. Chantelle is a brand I wished worked for me
-
My 2 best fits right now are 6.6" width and 11.6" depth, and 6.4" width and 12.1" depth. According to this, you'd think this bra would be too small or fit, right??

helpfulIt is YOUR bra, and you can wear it however you want. But the reason I would steer you away from wearing a cup that's too big (but looks ok with cookies) is that usually it gets pretty uncomfortable by about hour 3 if not before. If the cups are big, the band is also tight, and that gets old after awhile; the strap/cup junction will tend to rub your armpit raw esp if you have your arms out in front of you (like driving or typing), and the large underwire will make itself known against your ribs.
You already know this cup is too big on you so I don't have to tell you that it's not supposed to be this full coverage, etc. I know returning or reselling EMs is a hassle, so if you want to keep this I think it's a pretty valid choice. BUT I know that for me most of the reason I value EM bras is the comfort of the narrower wires, good cup construction and supportive, firm but not tight band. Without that comfort, sure her bras are cute but maybe not worth the trouble.
Looking at your other bras (none of which you've marked as fitting) I notice they are all quite large cups (for you) and mostly very small bands (for you). Without stuffing yourself in a 36C or anything, if you head a little bit in the opposite direction you may have slightly fewer fit problems.

I dont set fit regularly. EMs are still WAY more comfortable than anything else I've tried. I think they come very full coverage on me because I'm very high set and short rooted. My IMF is about 4" below my armpit, and that's the height of my root.
My boobs just grow out, not evenly, and I'm very center full. I'm not sure theres many better options. like when I start quadding its in the center, and I can feel pain across the apex (usually there's a seam there) because thats the area thats growing, but no upper or side fullness lol.
For example, if it lets me post links lol, I have pics of me in this przeplatanki in 70H and 70J: http://media.bratabase.com/cache/2c/96/2c9690603af5a8d7856f6ec669182727.jpg

To me they look the same coverage.
FYI, I have fat rolls where my bras sit, so everything looks super tight on me. I've been wearing 75s, and this actually looks way less lumpy lol. -
well, neither looks like the ideal fit but the J looks suuuuuuuper wide (and yeah, slightly higher coverage, but you're right not much).
i think em is a great brand for you! just not in a cup this big and not in a band this tight. These things are not innocuous. They cause fit problems the same way trying to fit in a small cup and a big band does.....but opposite lol.
this explains it a little: http://drueberunddrunter.blogspot.de/2012/04/english-reversed-letterphobia-and-war.html

The link doesnt work. I dont understand why you think the band is so big for me, my underbust is 32" tight and the band is 32.5" stretched. 34" bands move all over the place on me. If I get bands that are comfortable at first, they stretch out in months and I can't afford that. I would rather wear an extender and get more wear. My underbust is 32", but my waist is 34-35", and I am sometimes larger in between, so yes it looks horrible, but thats not why im wearing it anyway...
-
I dunno, the link works for me? I say about the band size NOT based on how tight it looks -- it just looks like you're wearing a bra :) but based on the information I have about how it's fitting.
there's no such thing as one standard 34 band, because all brands are different. my experience is that EM runs about one band size smaller than most UK brands, and the measurements reflect that. yeah, getting a band too big will result in not being able to wear it for as long as possible (though this is fixed with an easy alteration or a rixie clip). BUT getting one that is too tight and is stretched to its max all the time is also bad news for making your bra last, because the stretch will give out much quicker. Better to be just right. Also, the band fit affects the cup fit, making it wider and shallower if the band is too tight. (And, as we all know, droopy and ineffective if the band is too loose.)
FWIW I wear a 38/40 band and am plus sized. I don't think that saying you probably should go up to a 34 band in this bra is, like....offensive or anything. We are all different shapes and sizes, that's why we're here seeking and receiving fitting help.
-
I'll admit that was my thought lol, mostly brcause i never see any 32 bands that look uh in my weight class lol. I honestly feel more comfortable with them tight, and I suppose the takeaway is that's abnormal lol. (I used to wear 30s alot pre-EM so i suppose it still works out.) If I wear 34"+, I have to adjust constantly, not sure why. Dense boobs??....
For some reason this band fabric was extra uncomfortable though. Fyi, I ended up selling this bra, but I kept the prezplanki 70j and wore it without the extra pad or extender and it was pretty perfect (go figure lol).

helpfulHave you tried a 70HH yet? Or a 75H since you mark the band as too small? That may eliminate the extra space on the sides and it may work with just one cookie in your smaller side and none on the bigger side.
But no, I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing 2 cookies. If VS can make those add-2-cups bras, you can add 2 cookies.

I think a 70HH would be good, I'm not sure if its worth the return shipping etc, I might try to swap. I've been having bloating issues lately, so I think that will solve the band problem (usually I like ~32" stretched).
Do you know if the band fitting better would affect the cup fit? That might motivate me to exchange them lol.
Lol! true that! -
rambor888 If the band is too tight, it can pull the wires out farther than they should go to kind of compensate for the tightness. This can make the cups fit a little bit wider and shallower than they should.
As far as two cookies go, I have a bra that I do this for (it was from Zathiya and they didn't have it in my size and I was curious as to what it would look like). One little thing that I've noticed is that I seem to get the nicest shape if the outside cookie is a size smaller than the inside cookie (it gives it a bit more even roundness). Just figure I'd pass that on if you want to give it a shot :)
-
So it would give me more room in the cup then? I wore it today, and it was very comfy but my boobs settled and I had some gaping at the top. Buuuut my boobs are settling into the extra side room, so would it fit me better? (honeslty, when I scoop and swoop it barely holds my center fullness. why cant my boobs be normal shaped!!)
I did the smaller cookie thing today, man they looked so round! I feel like my boobs get squished a lot trying to fill the upper half of bras. When I was wearing 70H I would get more projection braless than in the bras lol.
-
fyi 3 cookies total, and yes I have an extender on here (although I'm not sure why, 32.5 is usually a comfortable length). I always get extra room on the sides, I would need the underwires to end where the straps end on this bra lol. The shallow bras are from before I discovered projection, but I think you might be right. Ive always considered myself broad shouldered, but clearly I'm not... do they make bras like that?
