Bra fitting help » No idea what my size is
Aerie » Katie Lightly Lined Bra (4441-0141) » 36D 36:4
Obviously the main issue is the band size, but I was intending to use this cup to find my real bra size - I thought this cup fit perfectly at first. Now I have really no idea how the sizes and measurements work.
If my breast perimeter is 12", and my underbust is 30" and my leaning bust is 40", why on earth is my "ref size" 30:7 ?? Years ago when I was much smaller I was wearing 28:8s and 28:9s. What does the ref size mean? Does it have anything to do with what my real bra size is? I've looked through a few other profiles to figure out how mine works, and I've come across people with the exact same underbust and laying perimeter and their ref size is 36:13. I am so lost.
While my perimeter is 12", this cup's depth is 9". With the way this one fits, I would think anything as deep as 12 would be gaping, and any bra I've seen that is that deep has wires at least as long, while I don't think I could do wires much longer than 9" since I am 5' tall and susceptible to armpit stabbing, which is even more bewildering because I think I have wide roots that reach far out to the side, and need wider wires. But then there's that same problem, where if I were to have 12" in depth in the cup, the cup width would be far too wide?
I was about to order a bunch of 30f's from eBay but I'm apprehensive about it since all VS and Aerie 32DDD's cover about half of what they should and the quadding is out of this world.
So I guess my question is is there any bra size that could possibly work with my measurements and shape? I'm starting to feel like I am just not made for bras.

helpfulI agree with dbmamaz but thought I'd add a bit more to it.
First I'd like to say your confusion and frustrations are completely normal. We have all experienced similar situations, so you are not alone. With a bit of trial and error accompanied by some patience and learning what does and doesn't work for you, you will find a good fitting bra.
Sister sizing tends to work well when going up or down one from your size, not when going 4 up from your proposed size. It does change the dynamic of the bra and how it fits drastically and won't give you a true picture of fit or the true issues with a misfit. It will almost always lead to confusion and frustrations.
Flat Cup measurements won't match your breast perimeter, as almost all cups have stretch to them and it's that stretch that allows for a "custom" good fit. Without it, we'd need a lot more cup sizes. Remembering that each cup is supposed to cover a 1"-2" variant helps. A 30 band bra with a 12" cup depth would give you around a 30HH to 30J (30:12-30:13) which would be too big for you based on your measurements.
Based on your measurements I'd suggest starting with 30FF to 30G (30:8 to 30:9) and adjusting from there. This is just a guideline and starting point, not a definitive size. What works for you will depend on your specific fit needs (your fullness factor, area of fullness, projection, width, etc and so on.) As dbmamaz said, each brand is different and often the styles within a brand can vary creating even more size needs. In all reality, we are all size ranges and not any specific size.
If at all possible, go to a store that has extended cup sizes and try them on in person. Lingerie and Bridal shops will often carry the smaller bands and larger cups, and can usually be found with a simple google search within your area. . If that is not possible, check Amazon for ones marked with "free returns" so if they don't fit you can return them at no cost to you. Amazon sells a variety of brands so you should have several options to choose from. When I was a 32G/30GG I loved Fantasie brand. Other good ones to look for would be Freya, Curvy Kate, or Cleo. Gaia would also be an option but they use EU sizing so you would be 65H to 65I to get a 30:8 to 30:9 equivalent.
The ref size tends to be based on the bras you have entered and marked as fit, but there are random glitches that make it give wonky numbers at times. I had it saying 34:23 at one point which is nowhere near my range of entered or fitting bras. It's just glitchy at times. Once you have found your fit, you can override this number with your own figure under your profile edit page.

helpfulOk, way too much going on in this post! I actually think the ref size is based on what you own, not your measurements, but I have no idea as the website's suggestions dont work for me. I ignore them entirely.
Not only is the band too big, the cups are too wide as well. They come nowhere near fitting, not only because of the cup depth, but also because of the cup shape. OTOH, its a plunge, and plunges will measure smaller because they just dont cover as much boob.
Warning - this is what we call a 'foam dome' and they are REALLY hard to fit properly. If you want to find your size, start with unpadded bras so you can actually see how they fit.
The quadding you see? Thats not really technically 'quadding'. Yes, the bra is cutting in, but its not because its too small. its because the shape is so completely wrong for you. Your breasts are much closer together than the bra cups are. You dont have any tissue at all at the outer portion of the cups.
I'm not sure why you think your roots are wide. They dont look it, but otoh its so hard to see anything with that over-sized dome covering your breasts!
I seem to often suggest Cleos as a first try . . . I think your breasts are actually fairly projected and cleos tend to be. You might even be full-on-top shape, but again, hard to see here.
Size? ugg Maybe start with a 30F and a 30FF - but be aware, not all brands use the same sizing and you might be different sizes in different brands just because of how they fit.
Look at what you see on ebay and then come here and look at that model/size here, look at the measurements and the pictures and read the reviews and try to really figure out what looks right. but dont blow a ton of money right away! finding your size is a slow, iterative process

helpfulNot a suggestion about sizing, but the ref size on your profile is only averaged from the bras you enter, you can even opt to change it by editing your profile. Its objective is for you to say "think of me as this size".
The recommendations would be the ones that calculates a size based on your measurements and bra fit information.

helpfulIf it helps, my measurements are very similar to yours - and I'm anything around 30GG / 30H (Panache, Freya, Cleo, Curvy Kate) to 32G (Fauve, Fantasie, Gossard). I do have stealthy tissue that makes me fit bigger bras than I look.
Like you, I used to think my roots were wide-ish, but turns out narrow & deeper bras work better for me!
In Polish bras I'm mostly a 70GG (Ewa Michalak), 70K with reduced cups & gore (Comexim) and 70I or so (Alles, Nessa). Comexim I've found to work best for everyday wear - hardly any underarm-wire-poking!But for diagnostics / figuring out your size, I'd definitely start with more easily available bras with more straightforward sizing, like Curvy Kate or perhaps Freya? Panache wires tend to be quite firm and tall so you may not like those as much.
But like MamaPagan and dbmamaz commented, anything goes: two bras will rarely fit alike and even chests with similar measurements can end up in way different sizes, for style / shape and comfort reasons. So you probably won't be sure until you've tried a bunch!
Purely guesstimating, I'd recommend something like C'Kate Ellace in 30G? http://bra.pe/SBTm6/ -
It's similar to your measurements and supposed to be quite forgiving due to stretch lace.Good luck (:

helpfulI’ve gone through similar size confusion, my size isn’t even accurate on here anymore because it’s just changed so many times. Personally, I suggest researching online a local bra boutique to get fitted. Even if you don’t buy a bra, or you can put one on layaway to save for, it can be worth it. A privately owned boutique, not a nation wide brand. I finally found a good boutique and walked out with bras that didn’t hurt after years of self -sizing and buying online.
Also, go into whatever bra stores you have available locally, and try lots on. I would take pictures of the labels on my phone and try many on. At minimum, now I know what doesn’t fit. Also, try buying some bras through bratabase, there are great deals and you can message sellers with more questions or price.
Bras are for you. Doesn’t mean the bra for you is a foam wired bra. It could be wireless, unpadded, plunge, full cup, stretch, sports bras, or some combination. What’s important is being comfortable. I wore stretch non-bra sized bras for a couple years because it was the only comfortable thing I could find and now I’m back in them. Don’t give up, but don’t spend a lot. I bought 30+ bras in different brands and sizes and it was a waste. I have them all and they don’t fit and all hurt to different degrees.
Google for different online bra boutiques online where you live or that ship there, some offer video chat fitting for free or with the purchase of a bra. I hope you find something.
