Curvy Kate » Fleurty Balcony Bra (SG1301) » 38FF 38:8
Issue resolved
Thanks for your help, everyone! I'll try a Freya Lauren, a Curvy Kate Princess, and a Cleo Marcie.
Original problem
This isn't a fit check. I know the cups are too small. I need recommendations for a new bra. My perfect bra would be an unpadded balconette, with a wide gore, low sides, and that won't cut in at the top. I like a round shape, too. Does anyone have any recommendations?

helpfulI'm not sure about the low on the sides, but the Curvy Kate Portia might be worth a shot for you.

Depends on your shape. Unpadded bras can give a variety of shapes and depending on the shape compatibility with your breasts and the bra, it can give a variety of shapes. From these pictures, it's pretty hard to tell what your shape is. Do you know what your shape is? I could give some unpadded recs from there.

I'm full on the top and bottom, but more on the top. My boobs are far apart, but somewhat narrow. If a bra tends to be even a little pointy on some women, it will definitely be pointy on me.
-
Any bra has the potential to be pointy, it's just that some have a weirder shape that doesn't mesh with most women's breast shape. Furthermore, there are levels of pointy. The least pointy shape is a square shape that's created when a cup doesn't have much projection in the middle, but has some on the tops and bottoms. There's a round shape, which is in fact pointier, and then levels of pointy after that. Furthermore, this might be an opinion, but perfectly round looks very very weird to me, a touch of pointiness usually gives a good finishing touch to your shape (again, this is my opinion so feel free to disregard it). Under shirts these can look different depending on the bra and your breast shape. For example, the Freya Arabella (5721) would give a very pointy shape on someone who's shallow and full on top, but it gives a very very very round shape on those who have normal to a lot of projection and not much top volume. Bras don't come in two distinct categories of those that give women pointy shapes and those that give them rounder shapes.
Based on your shape, the Cleo Marcie (6831) (which would give a round shape but might have a center gore that's a bit too narrow, this also includes the Cleo Melissa (6991) and the Cleo Ellis (7211) ), most Freya unpadded bras (except for the Freya Arabella and ones with the same shape like the Freya Lyla (4301) ) especially if you have projection, and Ewa Michalak SM bras.
-
I know what you're talking about. I like a natural rounded shape. I thought the "Freya shape" was pointy, but maybe that's just the Arabella and Lyla. I do have projection. Sometimes I get the smashed down problem where the wires don't sit in the fold of my boobs. I really want the Sweet Bon Bon from Bravissimo, but the price is just too high. Do you know of any similar bras with vertical seams?
-
Freya definitely doesn't always give a pointy shape. You should look at my Freya Lauren bra adventure. It gives me a very uplifted perky (not entirely round, but not pointy to the point that anyone would note it) look. You might want to look into it.
The Sweet Bon Bon doesn't have a lot of projection, and most bras that have vertical seams don't have a lot of projection.
You can look for the Masquerade Orla Non Padded Balconnet Bra (7031) , but that doesn't have a lot of projection and is ridiculously hard to find (worth it though, it's a gorgeous bra with nice materials).
You could also try the Freya Gem Half Cup (1363) , but it doesn't go all the way up to FF. That being said, it seems to run larger than the Curvy Kate Fleurty (SG1301) , so it might be worth a shot. It's unpadded with vertical seams.
If you're in the market for a sports bra the Panache Sport (5021) is very comfortable and gives a very nice shape. I would sometimes wear it as an everyday bra that's how good it was (but it has a lot of coverage, so it wasn't suitable for everything).
I haven't seen much on this, but the Pour Moi Secrets Multiway is non padded and has vertical seems.
Another one that I don't know a lot about is the Elle Macpherson Intimates Cloud Swing Underwire Bra (E76-835) , which seems to have no padding and vertical seams might also be worth a shot.
Also the new Fauve Chloe Balcony Bra (0312) is gorgeous (and really expensive). Definitely unpadded and definitely the vertical seam pattern.

The Lauren looks nice. I might have to try one. Do you think the Curvy Kate Princess or the Panache Andorra would work for me?
-
I would only try the newer versions of the the Princess as they have more projection and the wires seem to be stronger and it's overall better constructed. The wires might be too wide for you.
The Andorra is an excellent bra. It's comfortable, and works even if it's too small or too big. That being said, it can give a pointy look on people (and there really doesn't seem to be a rhyme or season for this). Personally I put it in the category of good pointy (though not round) because it's also uplifted and doesn't look saggy. But if you're really averse to pointiness, it would be best to find a used Andorra to try it on for comfort and size and then decide if you'd be willing to buy a brand new one (as there's a lot of colorways from many seasons floating around).

I got a Jasmine from Simply Be, but they sent me a size too small. I liked the shape, though, and I've heard it's similar to the Andorra. My main problem with the Jasmine was how stiff the fabric was. Is the Andorra made of a softer fabric?
-
There are differences. The Jasmine usually gives a rounder shape.
Have you washed your Jasmine yet? Erica from A Sophisticated Pair wrote about this exact issue with this exact bra in what I consider to be one of her best blog posts: http://sophisticatedpair.com/blog/?p=3384
I don't know about the Jasmine's fabric since I haven't had the opportunity to try it, but the Andorra definitely has stretchy fabric (I guess it's technically soft since I forgot I was wearing it, but I would call it soft the way silk or cotton can be).
-
I sent it back because it was too small in the cup and band, and it was sold out in the size I would need. I think I'll try the princess. Is the orchid/purple color one of the newer versions? And do you think I would need a 38G or 38GG?
-
I believe the light purple one was a newer version. The unpadded ones run larger than the padded ones, so either 38FF or 38G, I don't remember if they do 40 bands, but their bands also run tighter.
That being said, if there were any bra I would recommend above all the others, definitely try the Cleo Marcie (6831) or the Cleo Melissa (6991) . I think those would likely work well on you, and in the right size, they give a consistently good shape. Please consider those as Curvy Kate is a really finicky fit and it either works or it doesn't (and in most cases it doesn't).
-
What size do you recommend in the Marcie? I think most 38FFs are too small in the cup for me, but they're all I have right now.
-
38FF or 38G, but probably 38FF as that bra is very very very open on top (and runs large in my opinion, though some people think it runs true to size in the cups).
-
I'll try that one too. Thank you so much for your help! You're like the bra whisperer.

I've devoted over a year of my life investigating my own fit issues, and trying to assist people in the process. It just happens sometimes.

helpfulI have the Portia in 36GG, my Freya size. I could almost use an H, as they run about 1/2 cup small. It does give a rounder shape than Freya, but the side wires in the Portia run a little higher than the Emily or Princess. I think the Emily or Romance might be your best option in CK. The only shape I can think of that is unpadded but still round is Freya Antoinette/Adele/Amy group. But they top out at 38G, I believe. And their wires run on the narrow side.
The only option I've found that fits the 'round, balconette, unpadded, & I'd say a medium - lower, which I love! - gore, & low sides is N by Natori Sheer Luxe.i read about it on A Sophisticated Pair's blog, where it is a popular style. I have 2. They are super lightweight, 3/4 cup with vertical seams that are flat & invisible; amazingly lovely & comfy. I found them on amazon & ebay for about 2/3 of the usual $50 price. But they do run small, both band & cup, & in US sizing. So, I wear a 40H, the top of the size range. And that fits like a Freya 36GG for me. I have a 38H, which is a little small in the cup, so I bumped up the band. It runs snug enough to work for me.

I need wires more on the narrow side, so I'll look into the Freyas. I have the problem where a lot of bras come over too far around the straps. It's not necessarily the wires, but the fabric of the bra comes too far into my armpit. Like this, but the straps come over even farther on me: http://www.belle-lingerie.co.uk/1966/Freya/4301-Freya-Lyla-Plunge-Bra-Noir-Black/
I don't know if the bras are too tall or my shoulders are really narrow, but it's really annoying when a bra digs into my arms.
I like balconettes because they have more of a straight across cut. Have you tried the Panache Lucy or Marcie? -
Freya's give me the best fit, but I am not a fan of the pointy shape they get especially after G. I like their comfy straps too, much comfier than CK or Panache. I don't have a problem with them being too wide. But CK has a real problem with this. I have broad shoulders & they are too wide set for me. It helps to go down a band size & then use an extender. I do this with Portia.
Yes, I have Lucy in a 38G. It gives the most gorgeous round shape, & it's a straight across balconette. But. I find it hideously uncomfortable. The wires have zero padding & they are very sharp 1/2 moon shape - no gradual slant- so they really dig in under the arm & they come up higher than I like. Also runs small in the cup. I'm tempted by Marcie, but I have yet to find a Panache with wires low enough for me. And I'm 5'9", full on top.
Wow, you've reminded me that I really need to list a ton of bras. I still have 38FF & G's from when I was figuring out my size. I need to take back some closet space.

helpfulTry Panache Cleos. Most have a very round shape with forward projection. The only issue you may have is the top lace gaps. Then, you might have to take it in a bit. Hope this helps.

Aren't unpadded curvy Kates pointy? I know if a bra is pointy, no matter how well it fits, I just won't wear it.
