Issue resolved
I am going to try a few bras in my "correct" size.
Original problem
I have three of these bras that I have been wearing for years. Before I invest in new bras at my "correct" size, I want to see if it truly isn't a good fit. I don't know what to look for. My only issues are the straps slide off my shoulders constantly and the underwire pokes me near the gore at times. Thanks!

helpfulHonestly, nobody here is going to tell you that this is a good fit from a theoretical standpoint. Read on below if you want an exhaustive list of all the fit problems. But theoretical fit is meaningless if you feel completely comfortable in this bra and are satisfied with its appearance. Many women, especially young women with self-supporting breasts and/or women with small to medium sized breasts, walk around in bras that are not matched to their real anatomical size but experience no adverse consequences whatsoever as they are physically comfortable and are happy with the way they look. If this is you, forget about the technicalities and go about your life! There is no Bra Law determining a universal and absolute need to wear the Right Size If you're happy and comfortable, then I would call that good enough.
If you are NOT completely comfortable, suspect you CAN do better in terms of how your bras look and feel, and DO want to find bras that more accurately fit your anatomy, then read on for the gory details. Just about all of these fit issues would be addressed by trying on bras in a 32E or F, which are easy to find in most department stores nowadays.
- Straps falling off and wires poking both indicate that the bra does not fit your body's real dimensions (either one of these problems would also be a dealbreaker to me comfort and convenience-wise, but that is just me!) Straps falling = band is too large for you and/or straps do not adjust enough for you, this happens a lot with women whose breasts are set higher up on the chest (incidentally you don't appear to have narrow shoulders in these photos, I think the large band and your high on chest placement are the likely explanation). Wires poking = cup does not match the size and spacing of your actual breasts and/or is incompatible with the shape of your ribcage.
- The underwire sitting on your side breast tissue as it does here also indicates a poor fit i.e. a mismatch between breast volume and cup volume.
- The band riding up at the back, as we can see from the back shot where it is positioned quite high on your body, indicates a theoretical poor fit i.e. the band is much bigger around than your torso.
- The straps appear to be making an indent in your shoulders which also usually suggests poor fit--they should not be bearing the weight of your breasts, and in a well-fitting bra straps do not typically dig in on a person with lean shoulders. This bra's only virtue, fit-wise, appears to be that you do not spill out of it at the front!

Yes, scooping and swooping reveals a multitude of sins!
Bra bands nowadays are elasticated and this means you will see a little bit of indent/bulge around the band at any size, unless your torso is completely free of fat or soft flesh. However, too-loose bands actually exacerbate the bulges and lumps and bumps because they ride up to a higher level on the back, where most of us have more flesh. Many women actually have far less soft tissue further down where the bra should be sitting, i.e. at true underbust level. (Example, I am clinically overweight and fairly squishy myself but have less than 1.5" difference between my iron-tight underbust measurement and my super loose measurement.) This means if a bra band is optimally sized, you will see fewer lumps and bumps, although you'll probably still see a small indent.
Thank you so much wendybien !
I have a Wacoal La Femme Plunge Contour #8531 in 32DDD on the way to me now, so we'll see how that goes.
I guess I thought I didn't need a smaller band size because the 34 looks like it is cutting in as it is (fat on either side).
Also, the only reason that I seem to not be spilling out of this bra is I didn't know to do the swoop and scoop before taking the pictures. When I do that, I am definitely spilling out on the larger side! :)
