Bra fitting help » Size down a cup?
Cleo » Lucy Balconnet Bra (5851) » 30F 30:7
Issue resolved
It's not compatible to my shape. I need a bra that's more open on top like the Marcie.
Original problem
This seems to fit ok. I have to wear an extender since the band is a bit too. I'm starting to think that I should size down a cup because I'm not getting as much lift as I'd like.

helpfulHi, I´d say that the cup shape is not compatible with your breast shape. This is exactly what happens when I wear Lucy. The top of cups is too closed for you, itcuts in and pushes your breast "down". I think if you sized down, the problem would be even worse.
Have you concidered Cleo Marcie? It is more open in the cups, and for me it fits. The gore was painful but I bended the wires away from my body and now it works.

Same situation here. I haven't tried all the unlined Cleos, but the ones I have tried all do the same thing to me where it cuts in across the top of the cup. Going down a cup size is just going to make it cut in even more.
-
I'm so confused. I thought I was shallow and FOB. I found a 30E. Do you think that would fit in the Marcie?
-
Are these photos taken with an extender? If not, I would say that the cups may be distorted because of the band, but I rather agree with Fairy79 that this cup shape is simply not for you. But it doesn't mean you're not FOB;)
Cleo Marcie has open cups but I'm not sure you'll get the lift you're expecting. You shouldn't exclude Cleo bras though, they're known for their great uplift. My last, and very satisfying, purchase was Pixie which runs big in the cups IMO (and not only mine, I've read some reviews from my size range saying the same) and has open cup edge (but not as much as Elis) which gives a very rounded profile. Unfortunately I can't say anything about the current collection, but it seems their constructions are still being improved :)

You can have lower fullness while still having a tall breast root--meaning that cups like the Lucy's will be at odds with the natural slope of your upper breast shape. I agree something just a little more open on top would help, and you could then probably size down just a hair without difficulty.
-
Thanks. Any particular bra you have in mind?
-
uniteacher You don't look FOT or FOB. Even maybe a little more fot. Marcie is more open on top and the cups stretch more than Lucy. But you have to size up in the band esp. with Marcie. Whatever band fits in Lucy go up 1 size band from that unless you want to wear an extender.
-
and the cups being too small might be a reason the band feel too small. The cups seem to fit good it's just too closed on top.
-
I'm wearing an extended with this one so I guess I should go for a 32DD in the Marcie.
-
That would be too small in the cups
My horizontal perimeter fluctuates between 8 and 9 inches all month. I wear a 30E in Marcie. I tried a 30DD and the wires were too short on the sides. I'd say DD would be too small. -
Ok. 32E. Maybe 32F if I took in the cups.
-
Thanks. I wish I understood the numbers. I still don't really get it. I thought I was FOB. Turns out I'm even. Thought I had narrow roots. Turns out they're wide. I think I'm shallow due to three years of nursing.
-
I am in between med and wide roots I prefer med bras. A lot of cups are too wide for me. I don't really consider Marcie or Lucy wide. I consider most Parfait and Curvy Kate to be for wide
-
You don't think the 30F Marcie would be too deep for me?
-
The 30F Marcie band would be an inch shorter than 30F Lucy. 32E Marcie would be an inch longer the band than the 30F Lucy but the cups are about the same only in the Marcie the cups are more open on top so you wouldn't get the cutting in that you get with the Lucy.
I think the lift is better with the Marcie too. -
Got it. Thank you so much! There are no 32E Marcies listed but I will keep my eyes peeled.

Breast proportions change completely when you change size, because boob growth/shrinkage after puberty usually is almost all depth. When we label roots "wide" or "narrow" we are not thinking in absolute terms, we are referring to their width relatively to their projection/depth.
So for example when I was heavier and nursing more, my breasts were larger and more projected (11-12" lying perimeter) and this meant my breast root, which was somewhere between 5.2 and 5.5" (on my body, so cup width can be a bit more) was considered narrow to very narrow. Not because 5-5.5" is a narrow width in the absolute, but because it meant that I basically required a cup where the width was less than half of the depth. Now that I'm nursing less and have lost weight, my roots haven't changed at all, but my breasts have shrunk and my perimeter is somewhere around 10". THis means I now require a cup where the width can be MORE than half the depth. And therefore my shape is no longer considered so narrow and projected. Make sense?
Similarly, degree of fullness on top or bottom is related to projection and breast size. Fuller, larger nursing boobs may have volume above or below the apex that will no longer be there after you wean or lose weight, and the loss of fullness there makes your shape change again.
-
wendybien Yeah that makes sense when you explain it like that. :) If you prefer cup width of 4.5-5.5 and your depth is 8-9 that would be medium roots right?or is there a different way to measure breast root width?
-
or is there a different way to measure breast root width?
Because when I look uniteacher
imo she is medium roots. -
My head is spinning. I remember someone did some excel sheet with measurements on this but I'm not a math person. It's 2am. I'm off to sleep! Will try to figure this out in the morning.
I'm still nursing. And my weight has been pretty consistent since giving birth.

I actually had a 30F pink Marcie this summer but couldn't fill out the top which is why I thought I was FOB. I will try to find a 30E or 32DD one.
-
Yes, I'd say that sounds like medium width Nayanya . Well, a 1 inch range is a broad range so at 4.5" wide you'd be on the narrower end, but if you typically can wear 5" wide cups that is pretty average.
uniteacher I remember the Excel spreadsheet with brands on it (it was meant to rank them by how wide or narrow their wires tended to be). Is that the one you're thinking of?
-
Yep. That's the one.
-
wendybien thank you for all you help. :)
Wasn't that spreadsheet for women who think they are shallow and have a wide root? -
Yes. I think I got a 1 whatever that meant.
-
It seems you´ve already got some good advice here :)
I also thought I was FOB and was really surprised that Lucy didn´t work for me. But I have wide + tall root.I have pink and turqouise coloured Marcies. The pink fits me in 30F. The turqouise I have in 30E but it is tad too small in the cups. I also have Pixie in 30E. It is supposed to be cut like Marcie, but I think the shape is a tiny bit different. I cannot explain how it differs... anyway it fits me in 30E so the cups are bigger than in Marcie.
My comfortable tight underbust measurement is 26 inches and I usually need a 28 band. I find that Marcie and both Pixie run small in the band, their 30 band is perfect for me.
-
Yes, I saw you had the turquoise one. I might want to buy it from you. I wrote to someone else about buying hers and am waiting to hear back from her.

30F Lucy and 30F Marcie are the same in the cups.
Marcie gives better lift and more room on top.
:) -
I though Lucy was for FOB. and Marcie was for FOT.
-
I'm even and both of them fit me. Lucy is more closed on top and Marcie is more open. Lucy gives a more tear drop shape and Marcie is more uplifted.
If the Lucy was cutting in on top, you won't have that problem with Marcie. Marcie is good for FoT or FOB. But better if you are even or a tiny bit FOT. -
Hopefully I'll be able to buy a Marcie soon.

helpfulDon't size down in the cup, because the top portion of the lace is already cutting in.
Try a different colorway of the Lucy instead - the different colors vary a lot in openness on top!
The black/white continuity colorway is very closed on top and won't allow for any upper fulness.
There are, however, several fashion colorways that are very open on top, like the malibu blue or the recent red one. The current sister model (Kali) and the older sister Cleo Lori Balconnet Bra (7221) also fall into this category.
I'm not sure whether this will solve the 'straps being too far apart' issue, but it's definitely worth a try, as the Lucy doesn't look like a totally bad fit on you.

I hate the pink but that was too big in the cups. I feel like goldilocks.
I wonder if sizing up in the band would fix the strap issue.
-
^If you do try a different coloured Lucy, I´d recommend you stay away from yellow as well. The bra I had troubles with was yellow Lucy.
-
uniteacher > I wonder if sizing up in the band would fix the strap issue
Maybe it would. A wider band will not pull the wires wider, and therefore the cups will stay in front instead of being pulled to the sides of your body. It's hard to explain, I hope you can guess what I mean ;)
-
I totally get it. There would be less pull on the band.
-
I thought I was FOB so got a Lucy. Do you think I'm FOT? I'll check out the Marcie.
