Bra fitting help » Sizing Help for Curvy Kate Princess - Gaping at top of cups
Curvy Kate » Princess Balcony Bra (CK6001) » 40GG 40:10
Issue resolved
Ended up sending it back and ordering a new size. I have problems with bras gaping, even in a size where everything else fits, so I'll probably just end up altering the tops of some of my bras to reshape the cup a little so it's shorter.
Original problem
I'm at a loss when it comes to sizing with bras right now. My measurements fluctuate a whole cup size throughout the month, and I live in a bra desert which means there's practically nothing in my size around here so I can actually TRY THINGS ON. Anyway, I usually measure around a 38:9/10, but I have no luck in that size. I think part of that is the shape of my breasts [which I'm having trouble determining] but the two bras I have that fit right now are Chantelles in a 40:7. This Curvy Kate is a 40:10, which I bought based on my measurements and the fact that a lot of people say that they have to size up 1-3 cup sizes, I figured it'd be a close fit and would work when I'm fullest during the month. However, I get ridiculous gaping at the top of the cup, which is a common problem for me in a lot of bras, though most aren't this bad. I usually size down to get rid of that, but sometimes that makes me spill out near the gore. I have no idea how many cup sizes to go down in this brand, though. I will probably go down a band size as well, since it's snug, but I can fit quite a few fingers underneath. Any help determining my shape, my size in Curvy Kate, or suggestions about what may work for me are much appreciated.

helpfulI can't tell you whether your breast shape is compatible with this bra, the cup is clearly far too large for you. In a bra that's closer to your anatomical size the shape issues can become more visible, if there are any.
To help you figure out the best cup depth, I would suggest you take additional measurements. I assume your breast perimeter is standing/sitting up or leaning over, so take that measurement lying down. Most of us above the DD/E range have quite a big difference between the measurement as it is taken lying down (which more accurately represents the volume of the breast as it will be in the bra) and as it will be when we are upright and the breast is allowed to sag naturally. For instance I have 1.5-2" difference depending on time of the month, so if I were trying to find a fit based on standing/sitting perimeter only, I'd be trying on bras in a good 2-3 cup sizes above what I need.

Sorry, I meant a lying-down (single) breast perimeter measurement, not a full bust measurement! Bra size calculators are very ballpark in their recommendations especially as sizing varies according to brand and design. But if you know your accurate breast perimeter then you can do a search by measurements on here and see options in each brand and model of bra.

ok, you might have a short root, but if gaping is a common problem for you, the more likely culprit is that you're just trying cups that are too big. The ABTF calculator overestimates for most people, especially not-tiny women. If sizing down makes you spill near the gore but otherwise the bra is a good fit, then only try bras with higher gores.

melifish I totally agree. Also, I often spill near the gore (lots of center fullness) but I can manage some low gores if the cup is cut generously enough there.

helpfulI think this cup shape is probably not going to be the best, some gaping can be from the straps being rather wide apart, but most of it appears from a cup that is too big. Also you may lack the upper fullness to ever fill the bra out even in a smaller size without other problems arising. Hopefully the other measurements your taking will help you out.

Thanks for your reply! I did some more measurements and used a bra size calculator that used all of them. They looked like this:
Snug ub: 38 Tight ub: 37 Standing bust: 47 Leaning bust: 50.5 Laying bust: 46
The bra calculator puts me at a 38GG/H.
Someone suggested that I could have a short root, as the gaping at the top is a common problem I have, and I don't have like any breast tissue from my collarbone to my sternum. Apparently Curvy Kates tend to be made for FOT shapes, so that is probably part of the problem. It does make it hard to tell if the bra is fitting everywhere else, though, if the top is not going to fit like ever. I don't think my breasts are firm enough to try demi cups.
