Bra fitting help » Are the cups too small, or is it just the cut?

Issue resolved
Not the right cut for me.
Original problem
This was my first EM and I was so excited because I was expecting it to fit but... I'm not so sure. See pics. What's going on with the cups? Why so much boobage - is the cup too small, or will this type of cut always do this to me?

helpfulYou have way too much fullness and are too close-set for such a wide plunge neckline. Additionally it's just too small, and a bit too shallow and wide--you need less wire width, a bit more depth, more height and certainly more coverage. I wouldn't be surprised if your boobs climbed out of this altogether if you tried to run to catch the bus!

Oh, and to be perfectly honest, when I scooped and swooped (well, after I scooped, but before I swooped), my boobs were not even in the bra. Both came almost all the way out the front. I was sad! :(

EMs PLs are far wider and shallower than the rest of their offerings. I wouldn't say right off the bad that EM is not good for you. I'd take a look at their other cuts like the S cut, which is narrower and more projected, though since you're newer to the bra game, I'd avoid them because EM is expensive and slightly more difficult fit than some other brands that in the end might suit you just fine.

helpfulIt is definitely too small in the cup, but I do not think sizing up would make this bra ok for you. The wires are already too wide and you can not fix that.

helpfulThe cups are not too small at all - it is clear from the side view that the bottom-side of the cups is completely empty! This happens because the band is way too tight and the bottom part of the cups compensate for this and behave on behalf of the band. Then, the cups become shallow, as they are being pushed to just make the band longer, and everything is out of place. Try to pull the bra upwards as much as you can, so you fill the bottom of the cups. Can you do that? Is there still empty space in the sides?
The wires are NOT supposed to go so much towards your back. They're supposed to end nicely *in front* of your armpit. Which size did the EM calculator suggest to you?Updated on September 13, 2014 Flag this

The EM calculator suggested I wear a 75E, which is bewildering to me as my best fitting bra is a Freya Tropics Plunge in 32FF, and also bewildering because I have an EM 65GG which is only a hair too large in the cups. When I look at measurements of 75E EM bras on Bratabase, the wire widths look perfect (I really need 5.0"-5.5" MAX, I think) but the cup depth is DEFINITELY not big enough.
-
Actually, if you wear a 32FF in Freya Plunge it TOTALLY makes perfect sense that EM 75E will suit you best. (not to mention that "best fitting" is a dangerously relative term).
It's clear to me that the horrible fit (also in your 65GG EM by the way, same problem! And in your other bras too, I browsed through them) is only due to wearing a band which is way too small and compensating for it with a cup which is way too big. The way these bras look on you is a "by-the-book" product of band too small and cup too large.
I'd say try the 75E and go from there [What's your underbust circumference when you take in a deep breath?], I think the cups width will be fine if you will wear the bra correctly, i.e. straps long enough and in the right position on your body, band not so tight that it pulls the cups under your armpits. EM really should have enough projection for you. -
My concern with that though is based on measurements. When I look at the measurements of the 75e bras here, while the band and wire widths look good, the depth seems consistently listed within the 9 inch range. With a perimeter of 11 to 12 inches, I am concerned about quadding out in that size.
-
Well, you never know until you try. It's a pain that trying is so risky (and costly!) though, with all the blind ordering and stuff.
What's your *loose* underbust measurement, with a deep breath in? -
Oh, I totally forgot to take that measurement! I'll do that as soon as I get home from work today and post here again.
-
My loose underbust with a deep breath in is 32.6ish inches. I think when I measured my loose underbust for the Bratabase measurement I also took a deep breath in.
-
Bear in mind that 32.6 inches is about 83cm.
The European band system is meant to correspond directly with circumference, whereas 32 bands are not meant for 32 inches circumference.

helpfulYou definitely need to address the band first. I have the same ribcage measurements as you. (I totally understand the desire for a firm band. I personally was confusing firm band with a band that was too tight.)
Get an extender, try on the bra again with it, and use the method I explained to you in the other post.
I am sure the bra will fit you totally different, and give you a better idea of what cup depth and width fit you.Again, saying this from experience, address one issue at a time. In this bra, it is the band that you need to adjust. The cups are looking strained (from the tight band). When you alleviate the tightness, you can see what actual issues there are with the cups. Are they still too shallow? Are they still too wide?

Womp womp. :( I liked the giant cleavage it gives, but it's true, it's really not reliable. Goodbye, sexy EM! And for some reason the EM bra calculator calculated me at 75E which is confusing to me, considering that the GG I have is only a hair too large on me.
