Issue resolved
The cup isn't right for my shape. The "wing" of my arm is normal, & I'll likely prefer bras with wider wings. Plunges and longlines are good options to try.
Original problem
I'm not quite sure what my issue is with this bra. I'm new to proper bra hunting, and as far as I can tell I have shallow breasts with wide roots. I think that's partly why I'm not filling the cup of this bra on top. However, I'm getting some weird "wing" on the side. Is this migrated breast tissue? Axillary tissue? I don't get it as badly in the other new bra I bought, which apparently has similar cups (btempt'd ciao bella). I fill out the Ciao Bella just fine. Is the difference the higher wing on that one? Any suggestions/theories would be appreciated!

helpfuli tried one just like this the other month. it fit me just like it's fitting you. the conclusion i came to (for the underarm/wing) was that the wing just wasn't tall enough for my shape (all cleo's are like that on me).
and the band was super stretchy on mine also.
sorry, not much help, except i think it's a shape issue as cleo's aren't too kind to oval shaped ribcages (at least in my experience).Updated on August 2, 2014 Flag this

helpfulIs it uncomfortable? If so, since the bra cups are so tall on you anyway, and these straps look very wide on you, maybe try a 30DD and see how that fits. Otherwise look for a different model of bra with less-tall cups and more centered straps, but wires/wings that are taller on the sides. A plunge style, unpadded or contoured, could be a lovely fit on you.
The tissue development in your armpit/sides is NORMAL. Your tail of Spence, which is breast tissue, is located on there and yours looks average in volume. Your body is also supposed to have some good flesh thickness up there--you have muscles that are needed to move your arms and shoulders and they need to go somewhere! Axillary tissue is a real thing, but you don't look like you have any. The area where your side meets your armpit is lean, almost hollow. Axillary tissue usually creates a roundish protrusion of flesh in that area or at least some plump, smooth folds.
I don't think the brafitting community did anyone any favors with this concept of "migrated tissue" which is at best a misnomer (breast tissue has been studied extensively and its cells do not actually get up, pack their bags and wander around the body; the worst that can happen is that years of compression can create a big dent in what would otherwise be a smooth, uninterrupted mass of flesh, causing the side/armpit flesh to look like a separate lump) and at worst a completely imaginary construct (there is no scientific/medical evidence for it and the fact that women often experience breast growth after proper fitting already has 2 separate and more plausible explanations: 1/ the fact that compression in a poor-fitting bra inhibits tissue growth and removing that compression can result in the breast growing to its full size; 2/ many newly well-fitted women are in their teens or 20s and the human breast actually continues growing until mid to late 20s).

wendybien, thank you SO much for this detailed explanation! I'm very new to this, and your answer was extremely helpful. The Maddie feels okay, but I'd rather exchange it for something that fits a bit better. I take it I would be a good candidate for maybe some half-cup type bras? I will also investigate plunges. Thank you again!

Yes some half-cups may work. In your size range you'll be able to find a lot of choices even in non-full bust brands; a 32DD or D that runs very snug in the band will often stretch to 30" or less. True half cups often have skimpy bands though so select ones that offer more side and back coverage--there are some cute longlines out there by many brands (really what used to be called midi or mid length as they only extend an inch or two beneath the bust in front) that could work for you. Plunges often run wide and shallow in your size range while still having good side height.

No, this helps a lot actually! I suspected it might be the wing, so it's nice to get some confirmation. I'll be bummed if I can't find a Cleo that works, they're all so cute!
