Bra fitting help » Lady says 34D, but I'm 30.5 around
Betsey Johnson Intimates » Stocking Stripe Lightly Lined Demi Bra (723803) » 34D 34:4
Issue resolved
I returned this 34D bra. Band was too big. A 32DD is much better!
Original problem
In my desperate quest for a bra, I went to the fancy boutique in town. She sized me at a 34D and I was confused since I'm 30.5 in my underbust. She said people come in claiming to be 30 or 32 all the time, but that they never are. Really? The bras fastened easily and I filled the cups, but I wasn't excited at all about the look. I bought a 34D as you see in the picture here. What do you think? Is this as good as it's gonna get for me? Here's what I've tried so far: 34D (good), 32DD (too small), 32DDD (good, a touch big), 34DD (too big), 32&34E (too big), 30E (too small), 30&32G (too big). Any guess on what size to try next?

helpfulThe Betsey Johnson Stocking Stripe bra is very pretty on you. I think that a 32 band might be the best. 30 bands can work on you, but only in brands that have stretchy bands (Freya, b.tempt'd, etc). Also, the specific model you are wearing has been known to run half a size larger in the cup. If you are in between a 32DD and a 32DDD in it, you are really a 32DDD (32E in English sizing). Try wearing a bra that runs true to size in the cups in 32E.

colorado607 I have tried numerous Freya bras in the past. All of those I tried ran true to size in the cup but they ran large in the band. For example, the 30 band Freya bras feel like 32 bands.
From looking at the other bras you added, it seems like Victoria's Secret and Betsey Johnson have bras that fit you. Definitely try other models in VS and Betsey Johnson in 32DDD. Another good brand that makes 32DDD is b.tempt'd

I agree with Saskia_C

helpfulYou are 100% a 30 band, don't listen to that woman!
It looks like this bra is too closed on top for you but might be the correct cup volume. If you sister size down to a 30 band (34:4, 32:5, 30:6) that would make you a 30DDD/E, but I imagine you would also want to try some 30Fs as well. If that lady says you are not a 30 band then you can shop somewhere else if she refuses to bring you the bras you ask for.Updated on December 17, 2014 Flag this

Thank you for validating me! Uhhg. I did find a 30DDD at Nordstroms Rack to try on. I posted photos of it under 'bras I don't own'. It was a Chantelle with no padding, just lace. I thought--this is close, but a touch tight. The 30E in Freya Deco plunge was too small as well. I don't know what to try.

Sounds like 30Fs then! Amazon can be your best friend since if you buy from them they have free returns on most bras. In the past I have ordered several bras from them, tried them on, then returned most of them in the box they came in. It's perfect!

Yeah, I wish I had paid more to order from Amazon. I have a feeling I'll be making multiple returns to all these ebay sellers. Blah! Excited to try the 30F and 32E. Thanks for your input!

helpfulSo, is your band fastened on the tightest or the loosest hook? Because when you buy a band, it should always need to be on the loosest hook, so you can tighten it more as it gets old and stretches out.
You should NOT put the cup on at all when determining what band fits. Your measurements indicate a 30 unless you find a tight band uncomfortable. You should NOT change bands at all when looking for something that fits.
Now, the cup on this bra you said measures as an 8 depth (but it could be an 8.5, right?) Your smalles perimeter (vertical) is an 8.5, so you probably dont want a bra with a depth smaller than that.
So, for example, this bra has an 8 inch depth in a 30E: http://www.bratabase.com/browse/freya/taylor-4971/30E/
but this one has an 8 inch depth in a 30DD: http://www.bratabase.com/browse/panache/andorra-plunge-5676/30DD/#
But yeah, it looks like you either want something more open on the top or higher? So it doesnt cut in a the top

After reading your suggestion I think I'm catching on. Thanks for pointing out cup depth. I've remeasured my bras and have a better idea of what to look for now. Thank you! I have a Freya 30F and 32E on order.

Cup depth was the first miracle I found on this site! Eventually I started to understand cup width, and even gore height! I think wing height is somewhat irrelevant for me as my breasts are low, so i've never had a wing cut in to my underarm.
Now i just need to learn how to stretch a band - my stretched band measurements always get me notifications to re-measure because they are too small. I have small, weak hands, ok!
-
dbmamaz My measurements are smaller than colorado607
and I wear a 30E Andorra plunge. -
Anyways, its a very long learning curve - I have returned many bras in my search for my perfect bra. I'm still learning.

Those are exactly the Freya sizes I have on order from ebay. Fingers crossed!
-
colorado607 which ones did you order? :)
you can pm to me if you don't want it broadcasted, lol -
I ordered the Freya Deco moulded underwire plunge in 30F and the Freya Deco Honey underwire plunge in 32E.
Question...32DDs are too small in the cup and 32DDDs are close to perfect/maybe a touch big. So where do Es and Fs fall into that picture? I thought that DD=E and DDD=F. I'm struggling to understand.
-
US sizing is DD/E, DDD/F, G,
UK sizing is DD, E, F,
I think...? :D
UK sizing is much easier for me. -
Ah ha! So if a 32DDD (US) works okay for me, the equivalent in UK is actually a 32E NOT F. The UK F would be like a US G and I know Gs are too big for me.
-
ok but 30F and 32E are sister sizes so sometimes you might be able to get away with it. :)

I have a Freya moulded bra in a 30F and a 32E on order. Are you suggesting that Freyas aren't true to size though? Any tried and true brands that you could suggest? Thanks for the input!
