Issue resolved
Wendy explained it perfectly!
Original problem
Ok, there are some fit issues here I'm aware of, such as slight quadboob, and the cups are a bit shallow. They fold over at the bottom after a few hours of wear. What I'm hoping to get is others' opinions of my root width. I've uploaded a picture of the wire indentation marks left after a day of this bra. My arm is raised, and I promise I'm not manipulating my breast at all, just covering up my nipple. I've never fully decided where my roots are. When I lower my arm, the tissue in my tail of spence area, like at the top of my side root, folds and angles a bit outward, and as a result I used to buy bras with wide wires thinking I had all this tissue under my armpit, and I don't think I do... My Cleo Lily does not leave marks in this place, it leaves them closer to a line going straight up from the bottom of my breast where the curve/bottom root is.

helpfulI think I've said this before, but to me it looks like your roots are kind of on the narrow side, at least for the lower 50% of the root.
It's possible, though, that you have a prominent tail of Spence, pecs that are more prominent than average, and/or that you have a small "trail" of breast tissue that extends out horizontally on the upper half though. That's kind of the trickiest shape to have because you then are forced to choose between narrow, VERY short wires that will end below that wider upper area, or normal length wires that are wide enough to accommodate the width up top (so then you'll have an acre of empty space at the bottom of the cup).
fain is right that too-wide wires aren't automatically a source of fit problems... but they aren't automatically UNproblematic either. Most people can rock wires that are 1/2 to 3/4 inch wider than their roots without any particular problems, all other fit criteria being met. Beyond a certain point, though, excess cup volume will cause lack of support, so the shape you get may not be great; or even if the shape is to the wearer's taste, the fact that the wires are effectively far back enough to act as a sort of diagonal boning will tend to have a minimizing effect and to allow the breasts to go east-west, which is not everyone's preference--many people like to be centered and have more projection rather than less. And of course if you're unlucky too-wide wires will hit an awkward spot on you. For me, anything over 6" and under about 6.7" will lie right across a flared rib that sticks out on my right side, and causes a sharp pain.

What you wrote about tail of Spence is completely about me! Thanks for the information.
I'd like to notice, that it is hard, but possible to find a bra where underwires match such breast shape, not very short, and also without much empty space on the sides.
-
Yes fain I've definitely seen some posts here where people managed to find that shape. Usually these would be bras with a fairly flexible underwire that, while appearing narrow when unworn, would be pulled out diagonally when it is worn, so that the outer half of the wire goes like this: / pointing straight outwards and nicely following the shape of this type of breast root. I can't think of specific bras though right now :-(
-
wendybien Most ones I've found that are flexible and willing to point outwards on the edges are Freya, and so far all of them have been too wide to begin with.
-
Yes Freya has very soft wires. So does Prima Donna but that's a whole other level price-wise. Which Freyas did you try that were wide?
-
Well my Decos are a bit wide, but the molded cup hides any odd shape I'd get as a result. Unfortunately they are also too shallow, and by a few hours this Deco Shape's foam is folding over. The Freya Instinct padded half cup is a Patsy clone and was too wide and shallow and initially I thought it fit but after a few days realized it too was folding over at the bottom and giving me this weird, flattened shape. Also tried the Enchanted unlined plunge/balcony, don't remember a thing about the wires because it was a horrible fit everywhere else - it's clearly made for someone with more boob on top or something because it gapped in the strangest places.
-
Yeah I guess my only suggestion would be to methodically try all the Freya unlined ones in case there's a new design that works and doesn't have that funky, overly closed-off top in lower band sizes
-
I might. I don't know. I'm so tired of trying and returning or reselling. It was fun at first but I just want a freakin' bra collection, already. My Cleo Lily seems to work as a nice unlined, despite the wires being short. I do have more noticeable skin/fat/tissue/tail of spence or whatever where the straps meet the side wings but it's not uncomfortable, it's so dang comfy. I've never been a fan of unlined bras because they're usually itchy. I would like to have a nice molded bra with enough projection, that's why I tried that epic fail of a Comexim Juliette. I have another Comexim coming from /braswap, I imagine it too will have short wires, that's what I hear about them. But I'm trying to convince myself nobody else notices or gives a rat's ass about my perceived flaws.
-
You have no flaws! Only the bras have flaws.
I can't remember if we ever talked about the Fantasie Rebecca?
-
Yes. Too much material on top for my boobs, I didn't fill it out on top. Too full coverage. No 28 band, really stretchy 30 band.

helpfulWe had this page Where's the Root of Your Breasts that has a couple of methods.
There might be many other ways that work for different built torsos. In your case I'd say that it should not be far from the imaginary curve continuing up your breast crease.

Yeah I don't get any kind of natural fold or crease & don't really feel a difference between the skin under my arms & actual breast tissue. Although trying to feel around when I'm PMSing & they're sore is a good idea.

helpfulIn my case, my breast is where I feel the underwire. Where I stop feeling it, is where the breast ends. I have really wide roots though they can not be seen.
Anyway, if the underwire is too wide, it's OK.Updated on June 12, 2015 Flag this
I think you nailed it wendybien about my roots. You're so helpful :) I don't like the east west look or all that empty space next to the wire. Plus when you go wider in wires, it seems the cups get shallower which obviously I don't need, I have immediate projection. My Cleo Lily brings everything within my frame & gives such a rounded shape. And it's hands down the most comfortable bra I've tried yet. But the wires are a bit short and whatever that thing is be it my tail of spence or pecs or an extension of my tissue, isn't contained. But damn I can wear that bra for the entire day & barely notice it's on. Sigh. I would be difficult!!
