Issue resolved
cups being too separate caused gore to fold
Original problem
I think this bra fits quite well and am only returning it because I don't love the shape it gives (I'm really searching for a nude tee shirt bra anyway, and the seams show through with this one). It's a little big in the band, but I expected that. My main question about this is why the gore folds on top. This has happened to me with other bras too. I assume it's because the cups are just slightly too far separated. I didn't realize that I had much tissue in the center near the gore, but now I realize that that's because my older bras weren't tight enough in the band to notice that the center of the underwires were actually cutting into breast tissue. Also, how do the wires look on the sides (if you can tell where my root is)?

helpfulJust to clarify the folding gore, because I'm not entirely sure what you mean. I think I see two things. First of all, the wire channels continue slightly past the wires at the top of the gore, and the empty channel ends seem to fall forwards, away from your body, a tiny bit. Also, it looks like the top of the gore fabric (between the channels) is slightly squeezed together so it makes a little gap, instead of laying flat against your chest at the very top.
I'm not sure what I'm seeing, but I do get the sense that its just not the most flattering shape for you. Which is vague and I'm not even sure what I see, but it just doesnt look perfect lol

helpfulThe wires look pretty good. I confess I have no idea what you are referring to w/ the gore though! Can you clarify? Folding how? I don't see any folds on the pics...

i should start off by saying that the fold is minuscule and doesn't cause discomfort, so I don't really mind it; I just wanted to ask so that I know what to look for in the future.
it is hard to see from the pictures, but what's happening is that the tops of the underwires at the center are moving as close together as they can. the result is that the tiny bit of fabric between the wires that makes up the top edge of the gore is getting squeezed outward. does that make sense? again, it's hardly noticeable, but I think it points to the fact that I actually have closer-set breasts than I thought. every new piece of information is another clue :)
and yay, thanks for checking the wires for me! glad I'm heading in the right direction.

Oh, right! Hmm, yes, I would think that would be the reason--that you're slightly more close-set than this. But it doesn't sound like a dealbreaker. What's important for the gore is that the wires themselves tack to your body (which they do), that they do not hurt, and that you are not getting quadding or spilling at the center. If all of those criteria are met, what the fabric does at the gore is probably not of any importance. So, I know you aren't keeping this bra so it's immaterial, but if you encountered this small issue in another bra that you DID like, I would not reject it over this particular issue.

wendybien, you always have great explanations! glad to hear that this isn't really a problem and now I know what other things are more important to pay attention to. it also makes me realize that the bras i've tried -- while none were entirely successful fits -- weren't so bad after all (wires have all tacked, no pain, no spilling). thank you!

yes! both of those things are happening. the second one you mentioned -- the top of the gore being squeezed between the two wire channels -- is what I was referring to in my question about the gore folding.
