Bra fitting help » Painfully tight band & gapping cups
Freya » Deco Moulded Plunge Bra (4234) » 28DD 28:5
Issue resolved
Based on comments, this isn't the right bra for my shape, so I am going to return this bra and look into bras with shorter cups and stretchier bands.
Original problem
I like the look of this bra, but the band is way too tight - painfully tight, the cups fit at the bottom but gap at the top. If I throw my shoulders way back the cups will lie flat against my chest, but otherwise they gap. The gore sits against my chest, but it's painful, as are the underwires. The band is so tight it's painful to move in the bra an I have red marks on my chest.

helpfulIt's interesting that the band on this is tight, because Freya bands tend to be quite stretchy. Gaping at the cups is incredibly common with the Freya Deco (and most moulded bras). I see you have both full on top and full on bottom in your shapes, but generally people favor one or the other. When you lean over at 90 degrees do your nipples point towards your face, straight to the ground, or downward. When in a hand bra where do you feel the heaviest/most full feeling tissue, above or below the nipple? Would you say you're more shallow (tissue spread out over more of your chest that does jut out a huge amount) or projected (the volume of your breasts extends straight outward and you get creases at the edge of your breast tissue)? Red marks are normal in a bra, but inability to breathe etc. isn't. If you want to pursue Deco, maybe try a 30 band (or just one of the more stretchy 28s) and look for one with a ribbon detail/seaming at the top of the cup. That will hold it a little closer in to you. The cups look like they're too tall on you (not surprising if you're high set). The Deco Charm has shorter cups. I personally absolutely hate the Freya Deco and think it's evil, but a lot of women love it.

So then my guess would be even to slightly full on bottom and average to shallow. The lucky thing for you is that in your size range most women will be shaped like that and most bras will fit like that. Natori Feathers is great for shallow breasts in general. Being high set just means that (in general) you have less space from your breasts to your collarbones, so even if you have a tall root you won't fill super tall cups like the Deco. Cleo Juna might work well for you (you might want to try a 30 band there) or maybe Curvy Kate Smoothie. Freya Patsy could also be a possibility. All of those are easily available on Amazon with free shipping and returns :)

thank you! I'm going to write all of these suggestions down and head to Amazon. Thanks for your explanations too - I'm still developing my breast shape vocab :) and learning how all of these things will impact how bras will fit - it's incredibly helpful. Do you happen to have a recommendation for a bra that could give me some lift? I'd love a bra that could provide a little cleavage - do you have any ideas?

You should talk to Saskia_C , she has a similar shape and size and will probably be able to help you much much more than I can! :) B.Temptd B.Wowd comes to mind (if you're okay with the 30band) and Aerie 30D pushups may fit you (they're also fairly shallow).

Thank you! very helpful :)

helpfulA too-tight band will completely throw off the fit of the cups, so I'm afraid you need to put on an extender and try again. New photos would help too, with extender.

Thanks, wendybien this is helpful - however I don't have an extender. I'll play with the bra a bit and see if any adjustments to the band help the cups - I only have my hands but I'll see what I can do. Thank you!

Paperclips, string... do what you gotta do! Or just send it back and start again with a 30 band.

Thanks! I never thought to use those things - but based on PetiteCollegiate 's comments I think I'm going to send back and start over with some of her suggestions :)

Thanks, PetiteCollegiate ! This is really helpful - I'm totally new to this and still figuring things out. So when I lean over at 90 degrees my nipples point straight to the floor. When I hand-bra my breast feels heaviest on bottom (I guess that means I'm full on the bottom?). I'm definitely shallow, and only the slightest bit projected - I think if my breasts were larger I'd get a bit of a crease - I do if I really slouch... I don't necessarily want to pursue Deco - it came out as one of my recommendations after I put my measurements in. I have Natori Feathers on order and am hoping for a better fit with that brand/style. I'll check out the Deco Charm. If I'm high set do I need a bra with shorter cups?
Yes, from the reviews on the Plunge I thought that the band would be really stretchy but for me it was like wearing a vise. Ouch!
