Issue resolved
Well, there is a shape mismatch. I will probably keep if for period-boobs and see if it goes any better then.
Original problem
I guess I just am a little confused bout how the line of the bra under the armpit is supposed to fit. I have a whole bunch of wrinkling and gaping there. I am not sure if this is because of a size mismatch or a shape mismatch. I show what happens when I try to eliminate the gap in either direction. if i pull up the cup is too small, if I pull sideways the cup is too big and needs a lot of boob in the middle of the chest. Is this just a weird bra??
bras are so hard.

helpfulWell, my 2 cents - if it isnt uncomfortable and doesnt show under a shirt and you generally like the bra, its fine. Very few non-lycra bras will hug every bit of you perfectly. Is this only happening on your smaller side? it might just be that its a little big on that side, but its better to fit your larger side - quadding is usually more obvious than gapping

helpfulYeah, this is kind of a weird bra, at least in my experience. But it fits you loads better than it fit me, and I'm kinda jealous cause it's really cute! I think it looks good on you, really. It's probably a bit big and a slight shape mismatch at least on that one side, but I think any smaller would be too small. That gapping is probably caused by the wire being a bit too wide for you, see how it angles outwards at the side instead of maintaining a U shape? Have you tried tightening the strap at all? If it bothers you, then don't wear it. If it doesn't bother you, I say keep it. In my experience with this bra, you need to match the shape of it exactly or it will gap, wrinkle, or cut in somewhere.

helpfulThis happens to me all the time with Cleos and unlined Freyas because the straps are so wide-set. It's actually WAY worse on me than what you have going on here. If it looks good under clothes and is comfy, I'd say this is actually a workable fit.

helpfulIt's shape mismatch. This model seems to be for boobs less tall than yours but more projected than yours. With more projected ones cup would be more pointed in forward direction, so underarm part would be set completely different than it sits on you. I'd say changing size would not solve the issue, it's just not your type of cup shape.

I don't insist that your breasts are universally tall, it could be a issue with this particular bra model that you don't encounter with others. The upper part of the "tall breasts" usually looks like the steeper slope comparing to "non-tall" ones, and it seemed to me like your case. My guess that with this bra you don't experience the major "tall breasts" problem, i.e. cutting into the upper breast tissue, probably because in addition to shape mismatch the cups are also slightly too big. Not a whole cup size though, that's why I don't think changing the size would be a solution.
I'd say the heart of the issue here is the proportion between breast part that "sits" on chest wall (and makes boobs "tall") and part that "hangs" freely (and gives "projection").
Here is a picture of what I mean - http://i.piccy.info/i9/9cc6b2b136f0418c137aea4ef78f7c58/1432906743/68264/853477/prop_female.jpgYou have enough tissues at the point_1 to fill the cups when you stand straight - cups gets kind of "spread" over your boobs that are "spread" on your chest. But since you have less to "hang" at point_2 than this bra's author kept in mind, you get the gaps on the sides. When you pull the straps up to compensate the gaps, the cups become too small because such pulling pressures your breasts to become "taller" and "spread" even more, i.e. putting you further away from bra's target shape. By pulling the straps to the center you don't allow the cups to "spread" and thus you accentuate the lack of "hang" breast tissue to fill them as they are supposed to. I'd guess that when you slouch or bend your shoulders forward, you also get empty fabric for the same reason.
3-section soft cup bra could be either the blessing or the curse, because I think they tend to be not-so-forgiving to the shape mismatches. I suspect the key of the right fit is the shape and size of the upper cup part, and the angle at which it joins the other two.

I think I understand what you are saying as far as the fit not working. I know that from the side my breasts look more like the top picture in the link you showed me.
Does this mean that generally 3-section softcup bras will not fit me if I go down to 30C and try a bunch? or do I just have to find one that is at 7.5" depth?
Bra shopping is pretty frustrating, I try lined bras and push-up bras which are too tall and wide at the sides as well as pointing me 15deg to the sides and then I try 3-section soft cups which are all really big on me (at least with the top section).
I was not under the impression that my boobs were tall enough to be an issue, usually my fit problems are in the opposite direction. The top section of the cup is lightly resting on me and the amount that my breasts stick out seems to be about the same with or without the bra.
