Bra fitting help » Cups too big and too small
Freya » Deco Charm Moulded Plunge Bra (1471) » 28DD 28:5
Issue resolved
This bra is simply a much too small cup size. Thanks for all the help!
Original problem
This is the first I've tried in a 28DD after getting resized from the 32Ds I was wearing at VS. The cups gape at the very top, but the wires are too narrow on the sides and push the edges of my breasts out. The gore is poking into the center of each of my breasts. What causes that? I can fit an entire hand under the band, and it rides up a bit. It feels very firm though. I was just curious as to whether I should go down or up a cup size or if it's just a wrong shape.

helpfulThe bra looks too small and too shallow. You are wearing the wires too low - probably because the cup is far too shallow and also because you'd need a narrower gore. The band is rather stretchy (Freya is known for that) - a 28 band should only stretch to 28 inches when new.
What are your exact under-bust measurements? Are they really all identical?

helpfulThe underwires are definitely sitting way too low, probably because the cup size is too small. Going up in cup size will also usually up the width of the wires, which should solve the poking problem. A closer-together gore looks like a good idea also.

So would the too low be related only to the cup size? Or is it the way I'm wearing it? I'm a bit confused about that, because it seems like my breasts completely fill the bottom of the cup. I do have tall roots for my size, could that be part of the problem?

They definitely do not fill the bottom of the cup. Look at your straight ahead pic, our left, your right. There's almost a wrinkle, and that's impressive for a bra as molded as the Deco. You may not notice the empty space because it is such a stiff cup. Plus, your breast perimeter is a full 2 inches bigger than the depth of this cup. Go up one cup, at least.
Look at this little diagram: http://imgur.com/LrXugqr
Where that red line points? That's where the underwires of your cups need to be. Not lower, not pushed forward, no empty space, no bottom breast tissue sitting on your chest, no wrinkles, nada. Pull the bottoms of the cups up as far as they'll go until they're running into where your breast attaches to your chest wall, and that's where they should stay. I bet if you were to do that, you'd have some massive overflow.
Edit: How did the cups of your old 32D's fit? If you sister size down, that's a 30DD - 28E - 26F. So you actually went down one cup volume from your old bras by trying a 28DD. Curious, what made you try this size? Really, your measurements suggest to me needing a 28F or 26FF.

Thank you for your help! Most of my 32Ds fit marginally well on the smallest clasp, but with the amount they ride up they always gape at the top. I've always considered myself a small 32D, and that's why I tried the smaller size. I've also only owned push-ups in the 32D size. When I ordered this bra online, comments suggested that the cups ran large so you should order down a size. You're all definitely right about the size issue though! I'll definitely try the E or F the next time I order. I wish they kept the small bands in stores to make it easier to try!

Well we're trained in the states to think of D/DD to be the biggest boobs on the planet, and they're not. Many people are incorrectly sized as a D/DD because there's a serious lack of size options available and well, that's as big as they come right?? and when your perception of your boobs doesn't agree with all this size brainwashing, it's easy to disbelieve actual measurements and reputable calculators telling you your real size. But cup size is not static, it's relative to band size. A 38D is certainly more breast volume than a 32D, and so on. All the "D" means is you have a 4" difference between your underbust and overbust, and on the grand scale of things, that's not a large chest. And that's definitely not you :)
I wouldn't go smaller than a 28F for you, honestly, until that size is proven to be too big. And I'd steer clear of very shallow bras as you look to have a fair amount of projection. Some lines will make tighter bands - Cleo tends to run tighter, for example, but not necessarily in their padded styles. Freya is going to be a hard fit for you because their bands are soooo stretchy, but if you want to try the Deco again, size up and that should help with the narrow wires and give your boobs more room in the bottom of the cup.
You might get along with a Cleo Juna in a 28F or FF (cups run small on that one) but you might find the band still too stretchy. Juna is one of those bras can be quite shallow in smaller sizes but as you go up in the cup it tends to allow for more immediate projection. You can see what I mean by checking out my profile and the pictures of the Ellie I have up - it's a Juna-twin. It is still too small on me (I'd need a 28GG) but look specifically at where the wires are sitting underneath my breast.
Don't be afraid of unlined bras - the Cleo Lily (getting harder to find as it's discontinued) or Marcie might fit you well - start with a 28F. Regardless of how they fit and if you wind up returning it, at least take pics and post another fit check, and we'll be better able to diagnose where to go from there because unlined bras will not hide fit and shape issues like a molded bra will.
Hope that wall of text helped!

Thank you all so much! I'm going to try with a 28F and see where that takes me. It's possible I've been wearing too small cups the whole time and just assumed it was the pushup effect. This is definitely an entirely new process for me! I'll check out cleo and see what I can find. I'm a little wary of unlined because of my sensitive skin and breast shape. I can see your point as to fit though. Would you recommend a plunge or balconcette? I think I've mostly worn plunges. Anyways thanks for helping out a newbie! :)

All the Cleo unlineds are balconettes. Trust me, they will give you the roundest boobs ev-er lol. I was skeptical till I tried one on. I was wary of unlineds due to my sensitive skin as well, but the Lily is quite comfortable. It takes some getting used to - I gave up on the Lucy because of the lace, honestly (and the wires were too wide). The Lily (if you can find it in a 28 band anymore) is the softest, IMO. Erin is Lily's replacement, not sure it's out for sale on Amazon yet... and it's neon animal print. But everyone says they soften up with washing. And they're nice for hot summer days!

Thank you for the help! My underbust measurements are all identical, I can't pull the measure tighter than 25 inches or get it to be looser unless I've got it crooked. My ribcage is very bony. Do you have an idea of what brands or sizes might be better?
