Bra fitting help » Pain on ribs between breast tissue and armpit (please tell me the word for this)
Fantasie » Rebecca Spacer Moulded Bra (2024) » 32GG 32:10
Okay so this isn't an issue specific to this bra but it's where I posted the picture.
Pretty much every bra with a 32 or 34 band gives me deep red marks and is super painful at the spot that is circled in the 5th picture for this bra. Most bras fit pretty much perfectly other then the fact that they are painful after 3+ hours of wear
I've tried going up to a 36 band and down in the cup (FF) but the band is way too loose, even on the last hook.
What could be the reason for the pain there? Is the band too tight or the cups too small? Also is there a term for that area of your body because that would make this explanation a lot easier.

helpfulIt could be a rib flare maybe? some ppl have a rib that sort of sticks out and causes pain? I only had pain there with one bra, the Panache Envy. but panache has really hard wires, i dont think fantasy does

helpfulAccording to your measurements of you and the stretched bra length, the band is too small. Also, the cup width looks too big, and with the marks on your skin, the wires are sitting on breast tissue. With the frontal view, it looks like the gore is too wide for your breast. Ouch! It would be nice to see a clearer side view to look at cup width and projection. Perhaps someone else could comment on cup depth and your breast measurements to say what is going on. My guess is too small cups. Check the strap length as they look like they could be a bit short though there seems to be lots of other things wrong with this bra. Hope you can move on to something that fits better. Perhaps check stretched length of bras to get a better fit for you combined with cup width once you get a better feel of what those should be. Just because a bra says that it is 32 or 34 does not mean that it will fit you well.

Have you tried just assessing how the band size fits separately from the cup? You can try bra upside down and backwards and see if the band feels comfortable by itself... if it does, it means that the band size in that particular bra will be good for you. If you're able to, you can try some sizes that are close together (like say the 34 band is good, you can try 34G, 34GG, 34H... ) It's easier to tell that way which size is best and if the cup is a good shape for you or not (sometimes it's not and none of the sizes fit, one is too big, the other too small, etc.)

I personally find that a bra closer to a tight "comfortable" measurement works well for me. The measurements that you listed are showing the band as shorter than your tight measurement. On your torso, the cups width may be stretching out. Perhaps try the bra with an extender to see if you get a better fit. It might lessen the pressure at the gore so that you at least get more comfort out of the bra. Try with looser shoulder straps.

helpfulSince it isn't bra specific, and your measurements would indicate the band size you are wearing is correct, I would suggest trying to use a comfort barrier. Sometimes our bodies are more sensitive and if you slouch (like me) then the front of your bra will dig in even with the correct (or too big) band.
Here's an example of a good barrier for the front bottom of the band:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K1XB2B6/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_jy6mDbQBE3N0Z
I use a similar one when I am having sensitivity days and it is a pain saver for sure.

Yikes! I think that I have it wrong with how long a stretched band should be which might be affecting what bras I am looking at on Bratabase and then buying. MamaPagan , can you suggest what length range voluminouslychested could look at given her measurements? Maybe a tutorial approach would help me!

jazzypants That is a very tricky question! Everyone has a different measuring technique, so the stretched measurement isn't very reliable, aside from comparing bras owned by the same person.
Some measure stretch and stop at the slightest wire movement (so a 23" unstretched is entered as a 25" stretch) while others test their strength and try to "wishbone" the wires, haha, measuring a 23" unstretched as 40" stretched. I believe most do somewhere inbetween.
For me, I know the average unstretched measurement that yields a desired stretch range for my comfort. Most of my comfortable fitting bras are 21-22" unstretched, giving me a good max stretch between 27-29" depending on the material.
In this case, her bra measured 26" to a max of 30.4" which tells me she is being conservative with her stretch. And that is okay as we all have our own process! With her comfortable underbust being 32", I feel she is in the right range for Fantasie, and I am confident that the real tension of the band is most likely around 33" which would be good for her measurements, especially as the elastic loses its tension over time.
I hope that helps!

Thanks MamaPagan for your insight into the relationship between stretched and unstretched and what the difference indicates about the measuring technique and what it means for ultimate fit on a torso. I will continue to hone my eye!

Thanks for this info! Should the stretched band measurement equal my comfortable, loose, or tight measurement? Since all of my rib cage measurements are close to 32 inches does this mean I would be closer to a 32 band instead of 34 (I usually go for 34 but have been experimenting with 32’s)? I’ve tried probably 10 bras at this point (see my bra adventure) and still haven’t figured out what my band size is - let alone cup size
