Issue resolved
Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions! I’m walking away with a clearer idea of my shape, a ballpark of what size/type of bra to try next, and a good attitude!
Original problem
I bought this bra before finding r/ABraThatFits. According to the calculator I should be wearing a 32D. I can see how that might be the case, I believe with this bra that the band is too large, and the cups too small. I can fit my hand under the band, and I think the cups are sitting on my breast tissue on the side, and maybe below my IMF at the front (it seems to push down during the day). I tried a Cleo Juna bra in 32D which unfortunately I forgot to take measurements for before returning, but the main issue was I didn't seem to fit the cups at the top (not just the lace but the cup itself) and the gore was quite tall. I think I may be shallow, short roots and maybe narrow roots? I'm really not sure. If anyone has any recommendations for a bra I should try I would love your advice! I hope this all makes sense, I'm new to all of this so please ask me any questions if it didn't haha.

helpfulYikes! A pancake bra! You have come to the right place. Be patient and be willing to break your current ideas of your breasts and how bras are constructed and how they fit.
I have found that fitting a bra needs the correct band length or it is just guess work with the cup. From now on, consider it verboten to buy a bra that is not a 32 inch band or equivalent. Or shorter... you might want to remeasure as the difference between your tight rib-cage and comfortable rib-cage seems high or maybe I just have stiff ribs. Looking back, i would also give the suggestion to remeasure bras, re-check how to do it, and check what type of measurements other people are getting with the same bra and sister sizes. Your cup width seems off. This will be an important measurement to assess when buying bras.
You are correct on the big band and small cup. The whole bra is sitting too low on your torso causing wire pain.
I lean towards thinking that you are not shallow, you have more tall than short roots, and do indeed have narrow roots. I have to disagree with my fellow bratabaser in that Natori would not be a good fit for you as they are wide and shallow in general. That is not for you. Someone here had posted a really good link for what shallow breasts actually look like. You do not look like that! I find that women with breasts on the smaller side of things are often told by bra fitters that they do indeed have shallow breasts. This is often not true - they just do not have any bras that fit you correctly so they put the blame on "your shallow breasts". Unfair!
When starting the bra journey, please consider unlined bras to get an appreciation for how your bras fit with cup widths and projections that are more suited for your shape. The pancake style of bra that you have here is wide and shallow in construction - even though this small size has the wire sitting on breast tissue.
Good luck with your bra journey. Measure often, break your breast views, and buy slowly. Do not show us another bra with a too big band!

helpfulYup, the band is way too big, however the cups don't look overly too small to me. I have similar measurements as you and really seem to fit into Aeire bras well. They're typically shallow and the plus for me is they are very available and affordable. Others here will have many more options for you to try. Natori feathers is also highly recommended here for shallow breasts.

helpfulA 32D actually has LESS cup volume than a 36A! (A 32D fits a 32” rib cage and a 36” bust. A 36A fits a 36” rib cage and a 37” bust.) So my first suggestion is to try 32D, and maybe also 30DD and 32DD, since your size can vary by brand and style. This 36A covers your breasts but doesn’t really provide support or hug your curves. And the band is huge for you (note the wrinkles in the back).
Natori Feathers Plunge Unlined Bra (734023) is a good one, but 32D is a size that should be available in a lot of stores so go try some 32Ds!

Thank you so much for your detailed reply! I will definitely look into unlined bras and your other suggestions. I promise not to buy a too large band again, scout's honor ;)
