I changed the underwires of my 30E - Freya » Starlet Vertical Seam Bra (1061) for longer and more flexible ones. Turns out, my instinct was right! The new wires turned Starlet from a torture device into a very comfy bra that fits perfectly.

Old underwires: width 12,3 cm / length 22,8 cm / sturdy
New underwires: width 13,5cm / length 23,8 cm / flexible

How this affects the fit of the bra:
    - The cups became wider and slightly more shallow.
    - The new wires stretch with the band, so the band is a few cm longer now. Since the band doesn't have a lot of stretch to it, it ... fits more comfily this way.
    - The underwires don't poke at all - neither under my arms nor at the center gore. I'm happy.
    - There was fabric sticking out under the arms because the old ones were too short. This is now fixed.

I wish Freya would use more flexible underwires in the smaller cup sizes by default, as those sturdy ones often feel restricting and uncomfortable on people with small boobs or bony ribcages.

    • Where did you get the new wires?

    • Vadaslava I got them at an onlineshop in my country that's selling sewing and dessous making supplies :)

    • Vadaslava It's always a good idea to check out local sewing supply shops and department stores first! But in the case of the Starlet, the wires they sold there would not fit, so I went for an online shop with a larger variety in wire shapes and sizes.

    • Wait, that's a thing?! How did I not think of this? Thank you! I'm definitely going to look into this!

Very nice! Since it's coming out in a black colorway, I may pick one up again at some point. I'll definitely keep this in mind if the wires are still stiff and pokey.

Some quick details on the construction of that bra:
    - It's an unpadded halfcup with one vertical seam in the cups.
    - The center gore is quite high, and comes up at about the same height as the wings.
    - The wires are long (23cm), but still about 1,5 cm shorter than the actual wire channels, so there is considerable wiggle room and they may slip around.
    - As bellea noted in her review of the 28DD, the wires are hard and unstretchy and I found that they poke my sternum and sides uncomfortably. I def. have to exchange the wires for softer ones in order to be able to ... wear this bra comfortably and for prolonged periods of time.
    - I found the gore to be quite wide compared to Comexim or Ewa Michalak, but there is no actual space between the wires. It's just that the wire channels are quite wide.
    - It has a straight back (no leotard back).
    - The band is long, but it doesn't have lots of give, so the bra feels quite tight when put on. It stretches to 30 inches on my new, unworn bra. It will probably loosen up after a few wears and after I exchanged the wires.
    - Cups seem true to size and fit overall, apart from the uncomfortable stabby wires.

I may update this review as soon as I exchanged the wires.

UPDATE: Now that my boobs have grown a little (half a cup size, maybe), it fits more comfortably. The wires don't poke, neither at the sides nor at the gore. Sadly, the cups are a little too small now.

This is my first vertical seamed bra and I'm not quite sure about it. The top of the cup seems tight and unforgiving and wants to dig in. I think this bra might suit someone with more bottom fullness to help fill out the vertical seam and avoid the top edge. I will report back once I've worn this for a day to determine whether I will keep or list this bra.

So I've worn this for a day and it feels comfortable. I don't think I am quite filling out the apex of these cups, which makes me think this bra requires a fuller bottomed breast. I was wrong in thinking the top was digging in because it is not an issue today.

    • I'm curious to see this bra in person and might check it out if it's at Nordstrom... But based on the vertical seam bras I used to wear when I was smaller, when you get this effect it's usually because you have too MUCH lower projection and the cup cannot accommodate it, so it kind of scrunches down as your boob climbs up to where there is more depth. This could also explain why the cup edge is cutting in, your whole breast is sitting higher in the cup than the designer intended so the cup edge cuts across a fuller part of your breast.

    • That's an interesting point. I think that there is enough depth for me because it measures at 9" which is usually perfect for me. I also made it sound like I was quad-boobing in this bra, but I'm not today. I usually scoop and swoop so that my nipples are higher, but today I'm seeing what happens when I let them rest more naturally. I'm going to wear this today to see how my breasts settle into this bra.

    • Scooping & swooping is important though, not just to bring your nipples up, but to be sure you have all of your breast tissue in the cup and supported by wires that are sitting where they need to be. From these pics, I would say it looks about a half cup too small.

    • I think these pictures aren't very good. I'll take new ones today once I get home. I'm wearing this right now and I'm not minding the fit. The wrinkling in the vertical seam I was talking about in my review seems to have flattened out with washing. Once I take it off and see the marks I'll know if I got everything inside the wires. And I dont really have a lot of extra skin to scoop and swoop anyway. I usually do the "lean, scoop, and wiggle" when I put on a bra and then reach in and smooth forward and upwards. Does that make sense? I feel like if I went up a cup it would be too big. Vertical seamed bras are a mystery to me and I do appreciate any input!

    • With vertical seamed bras it's often not the depth at the normal measured point (wire tip to wire tip level) that is a problem. It's the depth in the lower half of the cup. Vertical seamed cups are usually pretty shallow down there.

I really like this bra. It gives a nice shape. I do think it is a touch shallow for me or the wires aren't long enough or it isn't wide enough. I really don't know what the problem is but it gives me side boob.
