So I figured for my 30th birthday, I was going to get a bra that actually was PRETTY and well, didn't give me this overflow.
Yeah. Store kept putting me in the same size, but up a cup or two. But dang it, they aren't pretty! So I write down my size (40D-DD) and figured I'll ... buy them on-line.
Only, well, erm, those don't look ANYTHING like mine. Even here. My boobs are way more "fluffy" than that. And, what do you mean the band is supposed to fit like that?
Get over here Mr Tape Measure. Hrm. Tape Measure, are you LYING? 33.8"? So in modern bands, I need a 34? Fluff, get in place. No, you, get in front. HEY!!! You there, move it! Ok, so a HEY, boob, get back over here. Ok, I have no idea on cup size. I think at least a DDD/E cup, might be up to a G.
So, here I am. I'm all for buying used bras to at least start to figure out what exactly I'm supposed to be wearing. I find one who is better than the pile that I'm giving the evil eye to, that pile is going to join the burn pile.
So no pictures or begging for help yet. I know this 40 thing doesn't fit, and man, it's bad. I don't WANT a picture of how bad.

Welcome, your boobs are safe here :)
So, no pictures but we can do numbers, right? :)
Get Mr. Tape Measure and do this:
Underbust exhaled rip the tape tight
Underbust exhaled comfortably snug
Underbust inhaled confortably snug
Overbust standing in a bra
Overbust standing without a bra
Overbust bending over without a bra
Perimeter of larger breast bending over
Perimeter of larger breast laying on the back, tilted to the side so the breast you are measuring is completely on the torso, not in your armpit.
Also, it would help if you described your boobs to us :)
Full on top/full on bottom? http://i.imgur.com/zeP3dZF.png
Fuller in the center/fuller on the side?
Close set/wide set?
High on chest/low on chest?
This will help us ballpark your size :)
Happy birthday!
Prof: oh yeah. I went from a 38 band to a 32 once I learned to start with the tape measure. It is just a start, of course, and depends on one's state of torso fluffiness. But I'm pretty fluffy and the tape says 32.2 and I wear a 32 in most bras. And in the cup? from a B to a G or H (UK sizes).
Don't worry about posting a photo of bad--that's the best way to learn how to get to good.
