Thus far in my bra fitting journey, aside from some forays into Ewa Michalak bras, I've pretty much stuck with things which are either very cheap from ebay (so I'm not too bothered if they aren't great), or things which I can try on in person.
As I don't have any real desire to keep ordering from Ewa Michalak if I ... can possibly work around it (despite my feelings that an S bra in the correct size would be about as good as it gets), I've been browsing the Bravissimo site to see what options I have. I'm hoping that maybe some bustier ladies can give me some insight on bras which don't totally suck in my size range. I'm looking at getting something around a 30K (maybe a 32K if it's a bit shallow, or a 28K/30JJ if it happens to be very deep/generous), which has deep cups, moderately short wires, and quite narrow wires. My ideal wire width seems to be around 15.5cm, and anything over about 17cm becomes painful/ridiculous. Other things that I want include straps which aren't too wide set, and not too much side coverage, as my boobs are very high up on my chest. I'm slightly fuller on the top than the bottom, and have a very narrow, short root with heaps of projection.
Is there anything which would be worth me trying out? I'm just not super familiar with the offerings, so I'm not sure whether anything would be worth a go. I want to be reasonably certain that the bra is going to fit tolerably, as sending things back to the UK is very expensive. The answer 'there is nothing really suitable' is one which I am sort of expecting, but I figure it's worth asking.

It looks promising! The fact that the bra is quite low on alisa at the sides makes me think that it may not be physically painful for me to wear. The 30JJ looks like it may be a good size, based on the measurements. I don't mind full coverage (well... you'd know that by now because of the nature of my bra alterations :P), so this could be a good option.
Actually- alisa, when you get back from your bratabase hiatus, do you still have that bra? I don't even mind if it's a bit worn out, the 30JJ looks like it could be good for me (as Bravissimo are jerks who apparently don't see the need to sell 28 bands above a J cup)
Also pinging cellosubmarine - same thing. If you don't want your bra any more and you still have it (though it looks like it actually fitted you so you may love it dearly), I'd be interested in buying it from you.

My bra wasn't fitting well so I read a bunch of stuff on the Internet about bra fitting (how I discovered this site) and watched some videos and generally assembled, assessed, and analyzed data - which I'm good at, having been trained to do so in college - and, thus armed, I called the local Cacique, which is ... at the Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton, CA. Over the phone I asked whether they did bra fittings. The person said yes. I said I had questions, so she put me through to the store manager.
Now I wore a 42DD and I was pretty sure that my cup size was way too small, based on what I'd read. I asked how they did the fittings, and the woman said, "we measure your chest." She started talking about how they did it over your clothing, which I wasn't concerned about. I interrupted and said, "WHERE do you measure on the chest?" This totally confused her. I realized it was pointless to ask any more questions and simply said I'd be in for a fitting.
Later in the afternoon I went to the store for my fitting. I was given to a "professional bra fitter." I told her I thought my bra band was too loose because I could pull it well away from my back and it kept rolling up. I said the cup was too small because if I actually scooped all my tissue into my cup, it overflowed. She looked at my bra and said it looked good to her, and that she'd never heard that the most common bra fitting problems were cup too small, band too large. Nevertheless, I expressed, I wanted a fitting. So she got her measure and measured me. My band was 42, but she was surprised to see that I was probably a G or H cup. She left to go find those bras.
She returned with my choice, which was the Cacique Smooth Balconette (36851). I'd been wearing these for years. I tried on the 40G, the 42G, the 40H, and the 42H. The gore didn't tack with any of them. She had no idea what the gore was and said that her gore didn't tack either and she'd never seen a bra where that actually happened. I said I needed a bigger cup size, but they don't carry bigger cup sizes. She tried to get me into a bigger band size, but the band fit reasonably well though she expressed concern that it was too tight. At this point she went to get more bras and solicited the help of her store manager.
The manager then came and told me that *her* gore didn't tack, either, and that often they just didn't do that and that I should just compromise and accept that the bra was only sort of going to fit. Now it did fit better than my old 42DD, but it still didn't fit. And I wasn't going to drop upwards of $100 on bras that only sort of fit. The manager actually argued with me. I kept stressing that I knew what I was talking about because I'd done all this research and she practically rolled her eyes when I said that it had been Internet research. It was clear that she didn't think I knew what I was talking about. She finally said that maybe the balconette just wasn't going to fit me, and she got me a Cacique Embroidered French Full Coverage Bra (129400) and a Cacique Passion Lace Full Coverage (92120). Neither of those fit me, either - in fact, the French full coverage bra in 42G was *entirely* too small in the cup.
I did buy the two bras that most adequately (though imperfectly) fit me because I'm a big girl and I needed *something* that fit better than my old 42DD bras. But I was very upset because they just wouldn't listen to me, presumed I didn't know what I was talking about, and were clearly ignorant.
The Nordstrom's is next door and I went there. I was immediately helped by an experienced, professional bra fitter who knew how a gore should fit. She took me to a room, had me take off my shirt, tightly measured under my bust, and returned with bras in 42G and 42H. The H was a little too big, but the 42G fit very well. It was so comfortable! The gore tacked to my chest with both bras (Elomi Betty (8170) and a different @Elomi bra). The band fit well, the straps didn't dig in, and nothing hurt. She had me bend down when I put it on and scoop all my tissue into the cup, too - like she actually knew how a bra should fit and was trying to help me find one in my real size. I bought a third Elomi bra, wore one out of the store, returned the Cacique bras, showed the Cacique fitter what a gore should look like, told her about my Nordstrom's experience, and threw out my ill-fitting bra on my way out the door.
Lesson learned: At least at the Stoneridge mall the Cacique people are clueless and the Nordstrom's people rock.

My first well fitting bra was a Freya Active underwired sports bra from that Nordstrom. I had called to see if they had my size, and when I finally got there, after an hour of driving, I was delighted to find how well it fit. One of the lingerie salespeople politely asked if she could check out the fit. When I showed her, she agreed, enumerating the points discussed on bratabase and abrathatfits--wire width, gore tacking, band level, etc...That is a great store.
How did the Cacique fitter react when you showed her the unheard of phenomenon--gore tacking??
learningaboutbras She reacted pretty well, actually, as if she really wanted to know. I'd been saying all this stuff to her about how bras should fit and she didn't know any of it. Based on how she reacted to what I said and me showing her how the gore works, I wouldn't be surprised if she either actually went to Nordstroms and got fitted or is doing internet research of her own. She was much more open to new ideas than her store manager - it was as if she had been trained to think the only thing you needed to do to fit a bra was take two measurements.

Day 2 of the Bra Search in NYC:
I'm running btwn signing for the new apt and prepping for the move. Saw on Yelp one of my bookmarked Lingerie to Try stores was a few blocks away.
Lingerie On Lex: 831 Lexington Ave
A-G cups
Little disappointing first impression - Looks like demographic age 50, but there's some cute stuff. Only seeing Bs ... out on the floor. Requested 38F. She looked doubtfully at my chest and said "that's what I am." Welcome doubters! I, shallow wide, wearing a sports bra come in peace. I explained that I had just called and was told they had some. But she ran downstairs to look for Fs and Gs. After I made several rounds in the tiny shop, she resurfaced with 4 bras. "This is all I have."
None worked. The Chantelle Rive Gauche came close in a 38F but cut into top of my boobs and none of the gores came near my sternum. Should I go up a size? or simply find bras from that Shallow Bra listing?

Since none of the gores tack, it wouldn't hurt to try a size up. The shallow bra list doesn't work for me at all. I have all of the characteristics of shallow breasts, but none of the recommended bras work for me, so I'd never recommend that anyone stick strictly to the list.
That's good to know! I am definitely gonna try a size up on the next Bra Field Trip.
First of all, I would like to thank the ladies that got this database off the ground. I don't know who you are, but you've changed my life. I have HOPE!
Since many of you have talked about the sadness of not living near any great bra shops, I thought I would document my experience in a city with tons of ... them. New York City!!!
As a brand spanking new resident of the Big Apple, I was psyched to find a new everyday bra. For me, this means darker color, lightweight, and not too high of a cup (which would pop out of my work tanks)
I'm a shallow, wide root w/ full bottom
Tight Underbust: 38.5"
Standing Bust: 48"
Leaning Bust: 49"
Day 1:
Aiming for shops within walking distance. WALKING DISTANCE! I fraking love this city. It's 86 degrees & 60% humidity. Walking 3.1 miles. Easy.
UPPER EAST SIDE
Linda's Bra Salon: 828 Lexington Ave (btwn 63rd & 64th), lindasonline.com
AA-K cups & 28-44 bands
- Appointments for fitting highly recommended
- Tiny shop, quiet, 2 fitting rooms
- Superfast. (pro or con?) I was fitted and done w/ 4 bras in less than 15 mins
- Had similar method to Scoop/Swoop - called "Jiggle it all in"
- Gave me 4 bras in 3 sizes: 38DD, 38DDD, 38FF - which all were either too small in the cup, or cut into the top of my boobs dramatically despite seeming to fit otherwise.
In general, awesome to find a place that carries a huge range. However, service felt a little too rushed for me. I need more than 5 secs in a bra to figure out if it feels good. Didn't buy. She said I was limited to those 4 bras basically. I'm not sure if that's all they had in stock or if my request of an everyday bra was too specific. Will have to try the Linda's Murray Hill location.
Violas Smart Shop: 1482 1st Ave
- Yelp raved about it, but the outside scared me. GRANDMA BRA ALERT
- Inside, same thing
- Didn't ask for a fitting as I couldn't see any bras I would be remotely interested in
Livi's Lingerie: 1456 3rd Ave (btwn 82nd & 83rd), livislingerie.com
A-DDD cups & 30-42 bands
- Window display was decent, perhaps a little dated.
- Chatted with the saleswoman older than my Grandma. (pro: experience!)
- Bras stored in their original boxes that appear to be from the 1950s
- Only stocked black, white, nude
Requested a bra fitting... here's where it got interesting. She told me that because of the amount of work it requires to fit a bra - as all brands are different - we would not be doing a bra fitting until I was ready to purchase. Then she would pull down the sizes we might need and try a variety in that bra. Huh. I explained that I couldn't possibly know if I would want a bra until trying it on. But to no avail.
Result: No bras. Feeling a little defeated. Need to be more aggressive.

Hey! Biased upper west sider here, but I'd put town shop near the top of your list. :) Their fitting can be hit and miss but was better than Linda's and they have a large stock. Mostly, I've never felt rushed there.
Also, is there a reason you're aiming at 38F? Bard on your experiences? with those measurements I might have guessed 38GG. Also heads up to be careful about sizing - must fitters I've encountered here refuse to believe there's a difference between uk and US sizing, and don'tknow double letters or erroneously think it's half sizing.
I will definitely check that place out. Thanks! I asked for a 38F partially bc I'm still not sure I'm a G or GG. It just sounds too crazy. Also, just asking for a F was a big deal. I asked for that and a G and it seemed like i had told her the moon was a cookie. NYC fitters make me nervous. The briskness, the urgency... It's not quite the laid back California style I'm accustomed to. I just gotta psych myself up ahead next time. *Be Assertive! B-E Assertive!*

Went to The Bra Bar for a fitting. Came home with the Rebecca Molded Fantasie bra in a 32DD. A bit to round for my liking, I might take it back.

If you find a moulded cup too round, try a freya unpadded balconette (freya is a sister brand of fantasie and they fit very similarly) as that style gives a very perky, uplifted but natural look. :)
I haven't had much luck with Freya bras as they tend to wrinkle in the cups for me. Mind you, I've never tried their balconette. Thanks for the tip!

I have a friend who is really bra-un-savy. She says she isn't even sure what size she wears. I was checking out her bra collection and all the tags are unreadable. She has mostly has mostly some cheapy brand called Fashion Bug. But, she does have 1 Chantelle and 2 Vanity Fair bras. She let me measure them ... to add to Bratabase. With her Chantelle I can tell it's a Rive Guache (3281) but I can't read the size because the tag has faded so much it is unledgible. I just need to find out how to add this bra without being able to know, for sure, what the size is. Can someone help me out with this little problem?

Measure as much as you can and compare the info to the Rive Gauches listed?
When this photo was taken I wore a 34FF/32G cup bra. I now wear a 34JJ cup bra. Over all I am about 20 -25 lbs less in this photo and was about a size 9. I would not dare go out with a bra now as I am in this photo. 3 babies later my breasts sag almost to my belly button.

So I got a curvy Kate today size 28 G and it was too small on bottom half of cup and too big on top half of cup. I tried to fit into it right and wasn't able to so, I am going to sell it on e-bay. I tried on my 28 F Mark and spencer limited ... edition and it fits with 2 bra extenders on the loosest. LOL Can someone please tell me what that means? Am sizing wrong with all my bras because I have to wear extenders for all of them to get them to fit correctly in the cup. I know for sure I am bottom heavy because of the issues with the Curvy Kate Emily it's brown with lime lace. I was hoping it would fit right. It's kind of sad. Any advice (seeing as I am very new to the right size bra wearing experience) would be very much appreciated. My band measurement is 26.5 comfortably and B perimeter is 10. Thanks so much! I was thinking maybe it was because I was shallow. I have tried on bras that are too small but yet they are all baggy. And then the ones that do fit only fit the cups after I put a bra extender on. the bands aren't too tight cause I tested them backwards but the cups are too tight on all my bras until I loosen the band. Could that mean that I have shallow breasts? They look smaller than they are too. A lot smaller. but it takes more than 2 of my hands to cover all of my breast tissue. The only Curvy Kate that every fit was 28 FF elegance plunge but it was too small. I could in the center where the cleavage was supposed to be the cup was digging in like it was too small. Fantasie Susanna is probably the only bra that really looked right on my girls. The 30 E I had was too small. It was painful to wear. I think I have grown out of a bra that I didn't even wear. Now it's too tight with 1 extender. :/ Right now that best fitting is Pour Moi 28 FF with 2 bra extenders on. Thanks for your help!

You could ask for fitting help for any of your Curvy Kate bras and get some more precise advice :)
28 sounds OK for the band given your back measurement, but then there are tight 28s and loose 28s :-/ ...
Marks & Spencer Limited Collection bands tend to run very, very tight. The 28 usually fits like a 26, occasionally even smaller. You're probably right to choose 28 bands in general; you just happened to get a bra that fits very atypically.

Okay... So I've crossed off high impact activities from my list temporarily. I have no sports bra that supports me enough for it and it's been *extremely* hard to find one that fits me. Moving on. I really want a GOOD crop top sports bra. I hate ordering online because nothing has ever fit me so far and I've ordered ... 20+ bras from the UK. You'd think that it's easier finding a low/medium impact crop top sports bra but I simply do not wanna take the risk when I probably could be better off sewing one myself! My biggest fit issue despite wearing "the right size" is that the neckline is far too low for me in any sports bra I've ever tried on (good cup width + good cup depth but the vertical coverage has been laughable). That's where sewing it yourself comes in handy! The only problem is I've never done anything like this before. I tried googling "DIY crop top", but that was probably not the best idea because the best I could find was using a trashy tank top and sewing in bikini padding O__O Anyone got any idea how to go about this? How to construct it? I thought about using an old one as a pattern (it's way too small in the cup and way too big in the band) but that one doesn't really fit me.

And oh! Also... I found the elastic that I bought to be pretty weak. It's probably meant to be used in the waist-section for skirts and so on... Does anyone know of sturdier elastic, and where to get it?
Would it be easier to get a bra that is a close fit and modify it?

I keep hearing about stories like these... At least from women living in the US. What's up with that? Do you need to sign the package or something before you can receive it? Whenever I order something (I live in Sweden) I don't have to worry about stuff like that, they just put it in my mail box.
aRRGGGHHH! How horrible! I feel your pain. I'm always missing deliveries, too.

I moseyed over to a Nordstrom Rack today and was surprised by them having a clearance sale going on in-store. Mine had several larger sized Freya, Wacoal, and even some Panache bras marked down to $9! Sadly they only had one that actually fit me. I did try on a few of the freya longlines in a smaller band size, ... but they just weren't working. The gore came up rather high, squishing things that shouldn't be squished. Is this a common problem with the longlines as a whole? I really like the idea of longlines, but I haven't been able to try one on that is my size.

I'm a bit afraid to contact the customer service of Ewa Michalak. Maybe someone here can help me. A lot of bras on their site are available only in certain sizes(like PL Black, CHP Koktajl etc), are these styles definitely sold out?
And it's just me, or the price of PL/CHP Cappuccino bra has changed?
Thanks!

I think it really depends. There are some that are sold out because they don't have any more of the fabric and then others that they just don't have any made and will make one for a custom order. I don't think you know for sure unless you contact (insert horror movie music here).... DOMINIK. (evil laughter)
It's too bad they don't get a better customer service agent or get him some training. The bras, in my opinion (and I know they don't work for everyone), are FABULOUS. I'll probably never bother with another manufacturer again. Sized out of Comexim by several cup sizes and I need SUPER narrow wires, which Ewa comes as close to as any manufacturer.
I have asked about both of those bras (back in April) and was informed that they do not have any more fabric to make them.

I just got an email from EM in response to an inquiry regarding the S bra. I cannot even custom order one in my size, the only style I can order is the PL! (Which I did, and will take 14 days to make, and 26 days to mail, according to the website...). I guess I will put my bra ... frustration on hold until after I get this lump biopsied, worst case scenario, I suddenly become much easier to fit!
Hi,
I'm sorry but in that size You can't order S style. You can order only PL style.

Bummer about the S style! I will say I like the PL *almost* as well as the S and SM. Both have their pros and cons.
Also, I don't think it usually takes the full FORTY days they are quoting. Mine said the same amount and I think it was here in the US within 2-3 weeks. It might have been shorter. I ordered May 28 and it shipped June 5, which is only 8 days. I think shipping took another week or so. It was pretty quick.
Yeah, chances are it won't take that long. I recently did a custom order for a 70JJ - Ewa Michalak » Pl Porcelanka, and it seriously only took a total time of 2 weeks to be made and shipped to me (in Canada....and on the west coast, at that.) I was very impressed.
This time last week, I eagerly awaited the arrival of my first Freya Deco, my first EM, another unpadded Freya, and my first Masquerade. They've all arrived, and I'm 3 for 4.
The Freya Deco was a crushing upset to the body positive self-image I'm working on. The darn thing made me quad half way through my boobs (not just ... the garden variety muffin top) *and* gapped at the top. WTH? How is that even possible? D: Swapped it for a Cleo Lucy; I hope that will work better for me.
The EM S Ptys is lovely. I'm glad I went for an "S" style, despite the gore being at the upper end of my comfort limit, since it's "specially designed for "difficult" breasts as well as those in poor condition". I rode hard in it, and it did its job beautifully. I'll keep my eyes open for more used "S" models close to my size.
The Freya Tallulah is quite nice. There's a tiny touch of orange in a glass, but it won't show up under polo shirts. And it's kind of cool to have a discontinued bra from 2007 in good shape; feels like a collectors' item.
Lastly, the Masquerade Amira. Oh my goodness, such loveliness. I'm afraid to wear it to work and get it sweaty. It seems like it would be a crime against bramanity.
But that Deco thing... ugh... :/ Anyone else ever had that happen?

That actually sounds like my Deco experience. I cried I'm a lingerie store dressing room, it looked so horrible :-(
Deco just does not work if you are FoB, especially if you are somewhat soft. I get massive gaping and falling out of the center in one size, and in the next size down I fill up the top but get massive quadboob. The difference between them is so pronounced that it is as if there are four cup sizes of difference between them instead of one.
Bravissimo Satine is a plunge that works a lot better for me. If you're working against the shape of your breasts, few bras are as unforgiving as molded ones, and the Deco can be exceptionally cruel.

Hi, I have a friend who got implants last year. Since then, she has had trouble with bras. She hates that the under wires go back under her arm when she has no boob there. She just keeps buying these Victoria's Secret bras, even though I tell her they will never fit her right because they aren't going to have ... the band/cup ratios that will fit her. Recently we were in a town with a Nordstrom, and we went so she could get fitted, but the sales ladies didn't seem to interested in helping her find something (to be fair, we were there kind of late). She started with a Freya, and the sales girl helped her, but then when the Freya turned out to be a bad fit for her, they both just kind of moved on.
I wonder if there is anybody on here who has had implants? If so, have you had any luck finding anything that really works?

I would recommend Polish brands like Ewa Michalak and Comexim. I have narrow breasts with a lot of projection, which I would imagine would give me similar fit problems and I need very deep, narrow cups which are hard to find.

Bravissimo just sent out an email: 'Essential nude bras to take you through summer and beyond'. Cue a bunch of white ladies wearing beige bras. There is one light-skinned black model wearing a dark brown bra that is several shades darker than her skin tone. Sending an email advertising their brilliant 'naturally nude' bras (now for white women ... only!) really underscores Bravissimo's lack of concern about the diversity of their userbase. DNW.
Actually, Bravissimo's lack of diversity in their models has always bothered me. It frustrates me that they have continually chosen a contingent of white models with one or two black women thrown in. As if those are the only human-options. (It also bothers me that most of their models are quite thin, but that at least makes more sense to me--or is it really the same thing? Is being white as valuable in society as to be thin, to the point where we wouldn't want to buy lingerie modelled by non-white women?) The UK is a very diverse nation featuring many different shades and shapes of women. I wish Bravissimo would get with the program already.
In the meantime, I'll be on the lookout for a 'nude' bra that morphs to match skin tone.

I'm annoyed by it too, I'm white but I really feel like it's inappropriate calling it nude when nude really means "when you're naked", and not everybody is caucasian. I'd love to see an asian chick in the photos too, I've NEVER seen an asian lingerie model in the UK.
On first discocovery its a fantastic shop, but too many niggles downgrade it

Since I stopped doing it excessively I actually can stand 34HH - Bravissimo » Mademoiselle Bra (LN110) for 8 hours.
Wire distorts still but it doesn't bother me anymore since it's not excessive.
Also I don't mind that I'm walking around braless most of the time.
I've given up on bra fitting by the book. I've given up ... on boob building. And I am much calmer.
I will try more bras but I have completely stopped feeling desperate for them. And I have accepted I will never have a perfect fit.
I feel like having gotten out of a psychosis.

My two cents: are you comfortable? Do you like how it looks? Then it is your right fit. If your bras cause discomfort or make you feel unhappy about your (or their) appearance, then you should keep looking, but don't change what you're happy with to make someone else happy. It sounds like you're there, so good for you - enjoy :-)
I usually recommend swooping and scooping, and I know many women do too, but really, no one should be forced to do it when they're much happier NOT doing it! I'm starting to believe that there really is no universal guide that'll suit everybody. All we can do is try to help each other.

I need your numbers ladies! I have noticed that ABTF reddit and Bratabase have very different sistems and philosophy when it comes to determining size - neither of which is complete in my opinion. There women ignore the breast perimeter numbers, and here women ignore the overbust numbers. Whee! Statistics. I think my husband thinks I've totally lost my mind now as I took off my shirt and started lying on the ground. Interestingly enough, I took my break the tape measurement by myself, and then I got him to help me, and I only trimmed off .5cm (like what? 1/5th of an inch?)
No prizes for guessing which measurements belong to me. You also know about my slightly insane preferences for super deep, super narrow cups, with a super tight band. I wish I could have added a note/comment about my preferences in the survey though.
:) Thank you for adding it here :)
I really think taking all this numbers in account in online bra fitting should work better - and in the end we combine that with the breast shape knowledge and everyone gets the right bra(s) with no hassle :)

I think the best place to start is Bravissimo Boudoir Beau (PA07) . Short and narrow wires, very snug band, runs true to size. It is deep and very high coverage so I am pretty sure 30K may be too large for you.
